End of wildlife week at Chhatbir Zoo
Chhat (Banur), October 7 Minister of Forests and Wildlife Preservation, Punjab Tikshan Sud, who was the chief guest, emphasised upon the importance of protecting forests and wildlife for sustaining life on earth and appealed people to extend their support for wildlife conservation. The minister also inaugurated a newly constructed nocturnal house for keeping night animals and opened up new pollution free electric vehicles for the public. Sud said the state government has taken a decision to compensate farmers whose crops were being damaged by wild animals. He said the government was in the process of finalising rules and would issue notification in this regard. People would be at a liberty to adopt wild animals of their choice by paying their food costs under the Animal Adoption Scheme, which was formally launched during the wildlife week at Chhatbir Zoo, he added. He also honoured winners of various competitions held during the week. Banur MLA Jasjeet Singh Bunny was also present. Financial commissioner, forests and wildlife preservation RC Nayyar who presided over said the first rural tourism project had been initiated at Chhat village keeping in view archeological importance of the village. Punjab chief wildlife warden RK Luna said the state government had notified a new wildlife sanctuary at Nangal to preserve the wildlife wealth of Nangal reservoir area. |

Workshop on secrets of Guru

Sahib, October 7 Vikas Dikshit, a practitioner in behaviour modification techniques and
neuro-linguistic programming, was facilitator in the workshop. Dikshit shared the secrets to bring about holistic and significant improvements in professional and personal lives. Principal Dr MS Grewal congratulated training and placement cell for organising the workshop. He said more workshops like this would be organised by the college in order to add value to the Human Resources of the college. The workshop lasted for three days. Over 50 members of the college staff participated. |

Gang of transformer thieves busted
Patiala, October 7 The accused were arrested near Ragarh village. During preliminary investigation, the accused have admitted to have a stolen over 100 transformers from Bathinda and Moga villages. The accused have been identified as Jiwan Kumar of Moga and Gurpreet Singh and Som Singh, both residents of Patiala. In another case, the police has arrested Mani Sharma and Balwinder Singh, both residents of Patiala, for committing theft at a house in Guru Nanak Nagar on October 2. |

Rs 4 lakh stolen from car
Kharar, October 7 The complainant, Manjit Singh, told the police that he and his two sons have gone shopping at a showroom outside Sunny Enclave. They parked their car outside the showroom, which had Rs 4 lakh cash. Manjit, who claims to be a BJP leader, said the money was to be handed over to a jeweller. He told police that while shopping he met the district president of the BJP and he went to Dera Bassi with him after parking his car. The complainant said he got a phone call from his son who told him that a sub-inspector from Chandigarh was demanding keys of their car as the vehicle was involved in some crime. However, Manjit Singh told the cop to wait for him. When he reached near Sunny Enclave, he found all the four tyres deflated and the car damaged. |
3 judges to join HC on Oct 12
Chandigarh, October 7 Sullar is a Sessions judge in Haryana, while Gupta is the registrar-general. Gurdev Singh is posted as Jalandhar Sessions judge. The oath is expected to take place in the courtroom of Chief Justice Tirath Singh Thakur on October 12 at 10 am before the court proceedings. With these appointments, the number of judges in the high court will go up to 48, against the sanctioned strength of 68. The number of judges had only recently come down with the retirement of Justice KS Garewal and Justice Pritam Pal; and the transfer of Justice Uma Nath Singh. The number is likely to go down further with Justice JS Khehar’s elevation as the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court. The warrants of his appointment as the Chief Justice are expected to come anytime now. |

Thieves decamp with cash, jewellery
Chandigarh, October 7 In another incident, Yogesh Guleria of Sector 44 filed a complaint alleging that someone had stolen 10 ‘tolas’ of gold and Rs 16,000 cash from his residence on Tuesday after breaking the locks. Two separate cases of burglaries have been registered. Snatching
Indu Kumar of Mauli Complex reported to the police that he was on his way for work in Ram Darbar on his cycle last evening, when a youth signalled him for taking a lift. He stopped his cycle and the youth, identified as Ravi Kumar of Sector 52, took out his wallet and fled. The wallet contained Rs 110 and an identity card. He raised an alarm and two motorcyclists gave a chase to the miscreant and nabbed him. He was handed over to the police.
Vehicle stolen
Amit Tyagi of Sector 38-A reported that someone had stolen his Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle (CH-3X-8147) from in front of his residence on October 4. In another incident, Upal Jindal of Modern Housing Complex, Mani Majra, reported that someone had stolen his Tata Indica car (HR-03-J-5995) from near his residence on October 3. Two separate cases of theft have been registered. |

Forgery
Chandigarh, October 7 Holding the accused guilty, the CBI special court of Darshan Singh today sentenced Gulshan Kumar, an employee of the Super Bazaar medicine store, to three-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 17,000. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had detected the fraud of around Rs 18 lakh in medicine outlets of Super Bazaar. He was booked for misappropriating funds by tampering with sales proceeds records. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act and relevant sections of the IPC was registered against Gulshan Kumar, shop in charge at the PGI medicine outlet, on March 26, 2003. PK Dogra, special CBI prosecutor, stated the Gulshan had been regularly making fake entries in sales proceeds ledgers and had misappropriated around Rs 18 lakh. The modus operandi was to show fewer sales of medicines at the GMCH and the PGI, where the medicine stores werelocated. In one of the fake entries, he had shown the sale of Rs 70 against the original sale of Rs 700. The CBI had filed a chargesheet against Gulshan Kumar on October 2, 2003. |

Chandigarh, October 7 She was rushed to the Sector 32 Government Medical College and Hospital, where she died. A case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving has been registered on a complaint lodged by one Surinder Singh of Kajehri village against an unidentified driver. |

2-yr jail for drug peddler
Panchkula, October 7 Jaswinder, a resident of Raipur Rani, has also been asked to pay Rs 20,000 as penalty, failing which he would have to serve additional six months’ imprisonment. The police had registered a case under Section 20 of the NDPS Act against him. On January 9, the intelligence wing of the local police, on a tip-off, came to know that Jaswinder was in Raipur Rani to strike a deal in poppy husk. Following this, the police reached the place and caught him sitting in a shop. A total of 1,100 gm of poppy husk was found from him. |
