Gang Rape
Police nabs three accused
Chandigarh, October 6
The police today nabbed the three youngsters who allegedly raped a 26-year-old girl in the wee hours of Monday. Sources said the mobile phone number of the prime accused, 22-year-old Pankaj Thakur, led to the arrest of the trio.

Major fire at Apna Bazar

Goods worth lakhs of rupees were destroyed in a major fire that broke out in Apna Bazar, Phase II, here this afternoon. However, no loss of life was reported. The fire started in the basement where refined oil and other goods were stored, and soon engulfed the ground floor of the building.

12,747 tonnes of paddy purchased, says DC

Different purchase agencies have so far lifted 12,747 tonne paddy from farmers. Stating this, Deputy Commissioner Dipinder Singh said Pungrain had so far purchased 2,325 tonne paddy, whereas Markfed, Punsup, Punjab Agro, FCI and Warehouse had purchased 3,824, 2,394, 1,840, 625 and 1,260 tonne paddy, respectively.

2 held for snatching

The police has arrested two youngsters for allegedly snatching a mobile phone form a woman in Sector 32. Babita of Ram Darbar, Phase 1, alleged that Rohit and Surya Parkash, both residents of Sector 32, were caught red-handed while snatching her mobile phone from near Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, on Monday night.

308 booked for drunken driving

Improving upon its last year enforcement drive record against drunk drivers, the Chandigarh Traffic Police has booked 308 violators this year against 27 in the corresponding period in 2008.

Undertrial gives police the slip
Chandigarh, October 6
An undertrial, Tarlochan Singh, gave the Punjab Police the slip and fled from ISBT, Sector 43, today evening. The police said that accused was brought to the city to produce him in a local court at Sector 17 and when the two cops, along with Tarlochan, were on their way, the accused ran away after pushing the cops from a bus.
