Millers’ strike hits paddy lifting
Khanna, October 6 The strike by rice millers has cast its shadow on the lifting of paddy in Asia’s biggest grain market here. Till yesterday, just 1,000 tonne of government procured paddy had been picked from the grain market, while private players taking the major chunk of the procured
produce. With 7.5 lakh tonne paddy of last season still lying unpicked across the rice mills of the state, millers have decided not to let new paddy arrive till the last stocks are cleared. Last year, till this day 13,665 tonne paddy was procured, while the figure hovered around 9,012 tonne till yesterday. Food Corporation of India (FCI) procured just 254 tonne yesterday. Punsup topped the procurers’ list with 1,853 tonne. On September 30, rice millers’ associations of various towns of Khanna had decided not to lift paddy for milling until their demands were fulfilled. They had demanded government to roll back its reduced specifications of colour damage and other specifications of rice grain due to which rice shellers were facing problems. Last year, the government had allegedly pressured rice millers to pick 201 paddy variety, which had failed to live up to the specifications of the Food Corporation of India. The millers have decided not to buy the variety this time. District Rice Millers’ association president Lakhvir Singh Kalalmajra said the situation was bound to worsen within a week. “Due to late sowing of paddy, late arrival of crop was registered in grain markets. As the arrival increases, there is bound to be a glut in the market,” he added. |

Kharar, October 6 “The move of granting lease will never be approved by the Congress government whenever it comes to power in Punjab,” said Capt Amarinder Singh, while talking to mediapersons at the residence of former chairman of panchayat samiti and Congress leader Harbhag Singh Desumajra. He said during the past Congress regime in the state, the government had spent Rs 150 crore on the infrastructure of the institute. The market value of the 54-acre land was worth Rs 2,200 crore. However, the entire land had been leased out by the Akali government for a period of 99 years for just Rs 133 crore. “Not only this, five acres of this land have been allowed to be used for commercial purpose,” he alleged. He claimed that the institute would earn Rs 300 crore per year out of these five acres. In this manner, the institute was not given on lease but sold out to people close to the Badals. He alleged that the institute was neither given on lease to professionals associated with medical industry nor was to those who had the highest bid. |

Rally venue fraught with security risk
Kalka, October 6 The link road, used for public rallies especially by leaders of the opposition parties, is unsafe from the security point of view, feel experts. Vehicles of VIPs with Z-plus security cannot reach the stage due to its congested location. Consequently, leaders have to walk past the gathering to reach the stage, posing a threat to their safety, say security experts. To make the situation more alarming, high-tension cable passes right over the venue where the stage was set up today. Yesterday, former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal was supposed to address a public rally at the same venue. The rally was addressed by HJC supremo Kuldeep
Bishnoi. Also, the venue is surrounded by buildings, some of which are in disuse, and can be misused by miscreants. Similarly, due to the narrow space, the distance between the stage and public cannot be exceed. Leaders of opposition parties, on the condition of anonymity, said the administration was intentionally providing the venue for their rallies. Interestingly, public rallies of the ruling Congress are being held at anaj mandi. |
