Swine Flu
Panic sets in; 5 test negative

Ludhiana, October 5
Five persons suspected to be suffering from swine flu approached the district health authorities today for their swab samples. The rapid response team examined them and sent them to the Civil Hospital where they were examined.Health officials said all five persons had symptoms of common cold and not swine flu.

VAT evasion worth Rs 200 cr
Ludhiana, October 5
The excise and taxation department has detected alleged VAT evasion worth Rs 200 crore by way of bogus billing by steel traders.A Veenu Prasad, Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Punjab, said bogus billing worth Rs 2,000 crore had been unearthed by Ludhiana officials of the department and the records of the firms were being scrutinised.

Thieves today struck again at a computer shop, which had witnessed a theft barely 15 days ago.The thieves decamped with 18 laptops and computer accessories worth nearly Rs 8 lakh from the computer store at Gurdev Nagar.

Youth alleges torture by CIA in charge

A youth had to pay the price of his elder brother’s wrongdoing as the former was allegedly tortured by CIA-II in charge Dilpreet Singh.Bharat Rai (18), a resident of Jammu colony, alleged that the CIA-II police raided his house on September 30 to nab his brother Munish Rai Tony, who is out on bail in a sensational Hero Bakery murderous assault case that took place in November last year.

Shatabdi food unpalatable

The poor quality of food and snacks served in trains, especially the Shatabdi running on the Amrtisar-Delhi and Jammu-Delhi routes, continue to annoy passengers even as the railways and the Indian Rail Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) have turned a blind eye to persistent complaints.

Whither civic sense, residents?
Day in and day out, residents of the industrial city blame the civic administration for poor maintenance and upkeep of roads. In the wake of pathetic condition of majority of main and inner roads even in posh areas, this is understandable too. Labourer dies of snakebite

Diarrhoea patient seeks aid

LSE to dump pact with MCX-SX

The newly elected chairman of the Ludhiana Stock Exchange (LSE), Prof PP Kansal, has made up his mind to dump all talks with MCX-SX (Multi-Commodity team of the Ludhiana Stock Exchange) for starting a trading platform in the region. The LSE had signed an initial memorandum of understanding with MCX for setting up a trading platform to give boost to the LSE.

Dog-bitten men create panic
Khanna, October 5
Residents of Khattra and Chhota Khanna villages, adjoining Khanna, got panicked on Sunday after dog bite incidents. Two residents of Salana village in Fatehgarh Sahib reached Chhota Khanna and tried to bite area residents. People ran away from them in panic. Later on, an announcement was made from village gurdwara about these men and people were urged to remain in their homes and were told not to go anywhere alone.

After returning empty-handed from demolition drives twice in Punjab Mata Nagar, the Ludhiana town planning wing finally managed to demolish all three shops here today. The demolition squad today was led by ATPs Harpreet Ghai and Kamaljeet Kaur.According to information, the team went to the site here this afternoon and started action without giving time to encroachers to make rescue arrangements.

Plan in place for effluent plant

The CIA-II police claimed to have busted a gang of extortionists, who had been grabbing disputed property and threatening people in order to extort money, with the arrest of two youths. One of the accused is wanted in two murder cases.

The police arrested a man and recovered 1 kg of opium from his procession. The accused, Gurdev Singh of Sherpur Kalan village, near Sidhwan Bet, was arrested yesterday near Nanaksar.

Unidentified persons robbed Rs 8,000 from a petrol station located near Lakhowal village last night.Laddi, an employee of the petrol station, in his complaint to the police alleged that four persons in an Indica car came to the petrol station and pulled out a pistol, demanding cash.
