Instant money order fails to draw customers
Patiala, October 4 Designed to help people to send money order instantly at a prescribed fee to select destinations across the country, the scheme was launched around two years ago. However, it has failed to draw customers as they are still unaware of it. A customer can send money to places having head post offices through instant money order. The sender has to fill out a form and give a 16-digit secret code to the recipient of the money order. The recipient can collect the money from the nearest head post office on furnishing a proof of identity and the secret code sent by
the sender. Ordinary money orders are sent through surface travel. However, electronic money order launched around five years ago has become more popular. A fixed commission of five per cent is charged on ordinary money order as also e-MO. The money is delivered the same day or the next day. The money transmitted through the ordinary money order or electronic money order has a ceiling of Rs 5,000. In the case of instant money order (IMO), the ceiling is Rs 50,000. However, commission charges are slightly higher for it. For Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000, Rs 150 is charged as commission, while for Rs 5,001 to Rs 10,000, the charge is Rs 170. Similarly, for Rs 45,001 to Rs 50,000, Rs 330 is charged as commission. DK Tripathi, senior post master, Patiala, said instant money order had failed to catch the attention of customers as many of them were unaware of this scheme. He said it was proposed to put up banners in the town as also on the premises of the head post office to promote the scheme. Pamphlets were also proposed to be distributed to publicise the scheme. |
