Victims’ parents seek strict action

“An inebriated cop driving his car on the busy Mohali roads is shocking. Strict action should be taken against him to discourage incidents of public servants behaving irresponsibly and endangering lives on the roads,” these were the remarks of Dalbir Singh, a father who lost his two daughters, Simarpreet and Ishpreet, in a road accident on December 6 last year.

192 needy families get new home

The Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) handed over keys to 192 dwelling units in Sector 38 (West) to families living in prefabricated shelters here today. Addressing a gathering, Gen SF Rodrigues, Governor Punjab and UT Administrator, said the ambitious project, costing Rs 1,200 crore and partly funded by the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), was being implemented by the CHB with an aim to make the city “slum-free”.

Gauri, who lives in a ground floor flat in the complex, says: “Earlier where five to 10 families used water together in the slum, each family in the housing complex fights for water every single day.”

Three held for gambling
Zirakpur, September 19
The CIA police today arrested three persons for gambling from Zirakpur near Kalka chowk and seized Rs 47,000 from their possession and some slips used for gambling. The accused have been identified as Girish, a resident of Chandigarh, Basant, a resident of Dadu Majra, and Mukesh, a resident of Panchkula.
According to sources, the police team raided the place on a tip off. A case has been registered.
