: As many as 15 MBA students from Aryans Business School were shortlisted during a placement drive at Aryans Business School. Anshu Kataria, chairman, Aryans Group of Institutes (AGOI), said the institute would make efforts for final placements of MBA students.

Rally held
: A rally was held by farmers and employees of the PSEB against the state policy of privatising the boaed here on Tuesday. Surjeet Singh, vice-president of the local PSEB Union, and Sucha Singh, vice-president, Jhanhuri Kissan Sabha (Pasla Group), addressed the protesters.

Encroachments removed: The Municipal Council authorities removed encroachments on both sides of the road from Gandhi Chowk to Gurdaspur Road up to the railway crossing near Gandhi Camp here on Wednesday.

ETT teachers meet: A meeting of the ETT Teachers’ Union, led by Swarn Singh Bhagta, took place on Wednesday, in which issues of delayed salaries, pending payments, increments and reimbursement of medical claim were discussed. Bhagta said the union was firm on its demand and would keep the struggle on.

Freshers’ party: Students of BA IInd and IIIrd year of the local Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa Girls’ College organised a welcome party for newcomers on Wednesday. The freshers interacted with their seniors and enjoyed a cultural programme organised by Amandeep Kaur, Taranjeet Kaur, Rajveer Kaur, Harinder Kaur, Neha, Satinder and Shilpa. Principal D.K. Mann welcomed the students and wished them luck.

Sukhbir’s nod for strengthening PR Dept
: Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Wednesday gave a go-ahead to the ambitious plan of strengthening the infrastructure of information and public relations department at the headquarters and modernising the offices located in the field as well as at New Delhi. Badal, who also holds charge of the information and public relations department, also instructed officials to put up a draft media policy for approval within two months. In a meeting attended by Media Advisor to the CM and senior officials, the Deputy CM said the department must be well-equipped to face challenges posed by the cyber age.

3 E&T Dept inspectors  suspended: A. Venu Parsad, Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Punjab, on Wednesday suspended three inspectors - Kulwant Singh, Karamjit Singh and Harjit Kaur - for being hand in glove with tax evaders. While Karamjit Singh, ETI at ICC Chullar Kalan, did not detain underbilled and underweighed goods, Harjit Kaur, while working as ETI at Fatehgarh Sahib, issued surety bond to a dealer for release of detained goods from her residence during a holiday.

2 held for murder
: The police arrested two persons on Wednesday on the charge of murdering Nikku, whose body was found at Jinda village on Tuesday evening. Maqsoodan SHO Sukhjit Singh said Jasbir Singh Kala and Jaswinder Singh Bhola were arrested in the Bulandpur area after a tip-off.

Pulse polio drive in slums
: The department of health and family welfare covered a large number of slum areas during the three-day pulse polio drive that concluded on Tuesday. Dr Puneet Juneja, immunisation officer, said slum-dwellers cooperated with the health workers administering polio drops to the children under the age of five. Dr Juneja stated that a total of 1,47,000 children were administered polio drops in the past two days and the reports of the third day were yet to be compiled.

Holiday on Friday
: According to a circular issued by the General Administration Department, the holiday on account of “Shab-i-Qadr” shall be observed on September 18 instead of September 17, as earlier notified. Consequently, Thursday (September 17) shall be a working day.

Seminar on drug abuse: Minister for Agriculture Ghulam Hassan Mir has asked for a comprehensive societal approach to fight the menace of drug abuse. He said the government was determined to root out this evil from society. Addressing a seminar on drug menace in Tangmarg on Tuesday, Mir suggested the involvement of peer groups, religious scholars and others in this drive to fight this social evil.

School gutted: A government school for girls was gutted in fire on Wednesday in Pulwama district in south Kashmir but there are no reports of any injuries, the police said. The cause of the fire is not yet known. The school is gutted completely and an enquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the fire.
