DC orders scrutiny of blue cards

Patiala Deputy Commissioner Deepinder Singh has ordered a proper scrutiny of blue cards meant for Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.

He ordered this at a district-level meeting of the food and supplies department here recently. He said the cards should not fall in wrong hands.

While addressing complaints of ration depot owners, he said they were not getting their full quota of ration, the DC assured that their complaints would be sorted out soon.

3 children, driver injured as auto overturns

In yet another incident of negligence, an overloaded autorickshaw carrying DAV School students overturned at Badungar today.

The incident occurred around 8 am when the auto collided with a bus. The driver of the auto and three children got injured and are admitted in Rajindra Hospital, Patiala. The driver of the bus fled from the spot.

Medical college gets ISO certification

The Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital has got ISO 9001-2008 certification.

ISO 9001 is a family of standards for quality management systems. ISO 9001 is maintained by ISO, the International organisation for standardisation, and is administered by accreditation and certification bodies. The rules are updated, as the requirements motivate changes over time.

Some of the requirements in ISO 9001:2008 include a set of procedures that cover all key processes in the business, monitoring processes to ensure they are effective, keeping adequate records, checking output for defects, with appropriate and corrective action where necessary; regularly reviewing individual processes and the quality system, and facilitating continual improvement.

Dr Sukhwinder Singh, vice-chairman of the Gian Sagar Educational and Charitable Trust, said here recently that the trust has been promoted by Harvinder Singh Bhangoo in memory of his grandfather Gurdial Singh Bhangoo.

The trust is being managed by medical professionals dedicated to undertake human resource development programmes through educational, health and community welfare activities by establishing schools, colleges, hospitals and social welfare centres.

He said the trust has been running the Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital, Gian Sagar Dental College, Gian Sagar College of Nursing, the Gian Sagar College of Physiotherapy and the Gian Sagar College of Paramedical Sciences.

Dr Sukhwinder Singh said the trust is involved in starting more institutions for providing technical education and vocational courses.

Factory employee killed in accident

Lalru, September 16
An employee of a Lalru-based factory was killed while another employee sustained injuries after a grinding wheel machine burst into splinters at the factory premises yesterday.

A case under Sections 336, 337 and 304-A of the IPC was registered against Prem Lal, manager of Samrat Forgings Ltd, and Raj Balb Yadav, quality supervisor, on the complaint of Amrik Singh, an employee of the factory, the investigating officer said.

While the deceased has been identified as Shalinder Ram (38), a resident of Kheri Gujra, injured Ram Dayal hails from UP. Shalinder was employed as a machine operator-cum-helper at the factory since 15 years.

The police said the incident occurred around 3.30 pm when Shalinder was operating the machine, along with his co-employee. Suddenly the grinding wheel broke into pieces and injured them.

The factory employees immediately took them to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, from where Shalinder was referred to the PGI where he died late last night. Ram Dayal received fracture in his leg, the police added.

The factory employees claimed that the quality of grinding wheel might be low or not fixed properly that resulted into blast.

2-hr traffic jam as bus breaks down

Kalka, September 16
Hundreds of tourists and daily commuters, including school students, headed towards Kasauli and Shimla remained stranded in a traffic jam for more than two hours on main bazaar, National Highway 22, here today.

A school bus broke down on the narrow turn near Kali Mata temple around 7 am. Subsequently, long queues of traffic could be seen on the both ends of the highway towards Parwanoo barrier and Pinjore BDPO office.

Students of various schools, who were to appear in the half yearly exams, were the worst sufferers.

Nari Niketan Case
Next hearing on Sept 30

The sensational Nari Niketan rape case has been committed to the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge GR Baniyal today.

The sessions court has committed the case to this court after the charge sheet was filed on September 2.

The court has fixed September 30 as the next date of hearing and charges are most likely to be framed soon.

Half-ticket passengers to get full seat

Buses in the states of Punjab and Haryana will now carry the message of full seat for passengers with half tickets.

Acting on a public interest litigation, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today ruled: “In all buses operated in Punjab and Haryana, it shall be displayed in writing that half-ticketed passenger will be entitled to a full seat.”

The Bench of Chief Justice Tirath Singh Thakur and Justice Kanwaljit Singh Ahluwalia added: “Counsel for the states of Punjab and Haryana have made a statement that the instructions issued shall be strictly adhered to and half-ticketed child will be provided a full seat.”

UN tribunal

The High Court Bar Association gave Justice Kamaljit Singh Garewal a warm send-off. Justice Garewal has made it to the UN Appeals Tribunal.

The function was attended by over 800 lawyers and judges of the high court.

Assault Case
Ranjit Bajaj’s bail plea dismissed as infructuous

A local court today dismissed as infructuous the anticipatory bail application of Ranjit Bajaj in an assault case.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Raj Rahul Garg dismissed the plea as the report filed by the police in the court regarding the case stated that he was no longer needed for investigation in the case.

On August 28, Ranjit Bajaj along with his three friends had allegedly attacked a police team outside a discotheque in Sector 26 in the wee hours.

The police had arrested Bajaj’s accomplices in the case, while the latter was still at large.

It was further alleged that during the melee, Ranjit had managed to flee. The police had arrested two of his accomplices from the scene.

The police had registered a case of assaulting public servant on duty, causing obstruction and intervention in government duty against Ranjit Bajaj, Mohinder Singh, Pardeep Kumar and Narinder Malik. Earlier, Ranjit’s father BR Bajaj had written a letter to the SSP, Chandigarh, asking for a reinvestigation in the case.

Graft Case
Food inspector surrenders

A food inspector of the UT health department, whose name figured in a recent corruption case, surrendered before the special CBI court today.

Food inspector Jagmohan surrendered and was remanded in two-day CBI custody by the court of Darshan Singh.

His name had figured following the arrest of Gurmohan Singh of the same department during trap a laid by the CBI recently.

The CBI sleuths had arrested Gurmohan Singh while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000 from a shopkeeper in Sector 42.

The CBI said the accused told the investigators that he had accepted the bribe on behalf of Inspector Jagmohan.

The complainant, Devesh, owner of Devesh Department Store in Sector 42, told the CBI that the accused had been harassing and forcing him to give bribe lest they should fail the sample of patties that he sold at his shop.

They had told him that they would book him for selling stale and unhygienic patties.

The CBI had registered a case under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act in this regard.

Couple booked for killing cop

Zirakpur, September 16
A Punjab police constable was allegedly assaulted at Zirakpur on September 3, which led to his death on the following day. The case came to light today after Karnail Singh, brother of the deceased, identified the clothes and photo of Balwinder Singh (34), a resident of Gurdaspur.

The police has booked a couple, who apparently a run tea stall at Kalka chowk on the Zirakpur-Kalka highway, on the charges of murder.

Balwinder was posted at Security Wing of Punjab Police Headquarters, Chandigarh, as a driver. The body had remained unclaimed for more than a week. On September 3, Balwinder was found in an unconscious condition at Choice road, Baltana, and admitted to the GMCH-32, Chandigarh, where he died on September 4.

The police stated that the postmortem report revealed that the cause of death was head injury and some weapon marks were also found on the backside of his head.

During preliminary investigation it was found that the deceased was regularly visiting at the tea stall, the police added. A case has been registered against Naimpal, hailing from UP, and Saroj, wife of Naimpal and a resident of Sangrur, under Section 302 of the IPC on the complaint of Karnail Singh.

SHO, Zirakpur, Sukhwinder Singh stated that the case had been registered against the accused and the hunt was on to nab them. “We are working on various theories and it would be cleared after the arrest of the accused,” he added.

Pedestrian killed in accident

Khan Bahadur (24), a pedestrian, was killed in a road accident that took place at Madhya Marg, Sector 8, last night.

The police said Bahadur was crossing the road, when a Mahindra pick-up jeep (CH-03-X-5201), driven by Radhe Sham of Nawasahar hit him from behind.

He sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the PGI. He breathed his last at the hospital.

A case under Sections 279, 337 and 304-A of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 3 police station in this regard. The accused was arrested and released on bail later on.

Cop suspended

The local police today suspended constable Jai Parkash for allegedly stopping the vehicles with outside registration numbers with mala-fide intention.

The constable was deployed at the UT Secretariat’s turn in Sector 9.

A senior police official said all concerned in the police department had been directed against stopping such vehicles without any visible violation. He has been suspended and a regular departmental enquiry ordered against him.

Case against man for burning wife

A resident of Colony No 4, Saroj alleged that her husband Raj Kumar had poured kerosene on her at their residence. She suffered burn injuries and was admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector-32. A case under Section 307 of the IPC has been registered at the Industrial Area police station.

Arrested

Suresh Yadav, a resident of Colony No. 4, was arrested from near the colony and 22 quarter of liquor was seized from his possession. A case under Sections 61/1/14 of the Excise Act has been registered at the Industrial Area police station. The accused was released on bail later on.

Bike stolen

Saroj Kumar of Sector 38 in a complaint lodged with the police alleged that a few unknown persons have stolen his Hero Honda motorcycle (CH-04-C-4930) from his house on September 13. A case of theft has been registered at the Sector 39 police station.

Shops burgled

Thieves stole two mobile phones, a television, recharge coupons worth Rs 2,000 from two shops in Attava, here today. However, no complaint has been registered at the Sector 36 police station so far. The shop owners said they found the locks of their shops broken in the morning and goods stolen.

1 hurt as families clash over park

A clash took place between two families over a petty issue at Dadumajra Colony this evening.

The police said both families attacked each other with swords and bricks. Jugni, a resident of the areas, sustained severe injuries. She was admitted to a hospital.

Baldev Kumar, in charge, Maloya police post, said: “The main reason behind the clash is yet to be ascertained but both parties manhandled each other for their dispute regarding the park facing their house.”

The cop said Roshni, Joginder and Ram Asre had been arrested. Whereas, Ashok and Nirmala are absconding. Action against the guilty would only be taken after getting the medical reports.

Businessman booked for fraud

The police has booked a Panchkula-based businessman for duping a garment company of Kolkata here today. On the complaint of PK Biswal of Two Plus Fashion (P) Limited, the police has registered a case under Sections 420 and 406 against the accused Raohash alias Rohit Kumar, a resident of Sector 4 at Mansa Devi Complex.

According to the complainant, Rohit had his business in Dubai and he sent his company goods worth Rs 80 lakh. The accused, however, failed to make the payment against the goods, alleged Biswal.

Patwari held for graft

A patwari was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 by officials of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau here today.

According to reports, Randhir Singh of Bakarpur village was allegedly accepting the bribe amount from Narinder Singh of Mattran village in the parking area outside the district administrative complex when a team headed by the DSP caught the patwari red-handed.

It is reported that Narinder Singh had to get his ancestral property transferred on his name after the death of his father, Gurnam Singh, and his grandfather. The patwari was allegedly harassing him in this regard who then allegedly asked Narinder Singh to give him Rs 50,000 if he wanted his work done.

Narinder Singh told him that he could not afford such a big amount after which a deal was struck at Rs 25,000. Narinder Singh later informed the officials of the Vigilance Bureau in this regard who then laid a trap to nab the patwari.

Malkeet Singh, a lecturer in Government Senior Secondary School, Ropar, and DPE Jaswinder Singh acted as witnesses in the case.

A case was registered against Randhir Singh who would be produced in a court tomorrow.

Rs 12 lakh stolen

A sum of Rs 12 lakh was stolen from a car in Phase VII, here today. According to the police, the car belonged to Harminder Bajaj who was a property dealer. The amount was kept under a front seat, which was taken away after breaking the rear window pane and then opening the doors of the car.

Bajaj told the police that some client had given him Rs 10 lakh yesterday and he had kept his own Rs 2 lakh, along with that amount, in the car.

He had gone to the office of another property dealer in the area and when he came back after about five minutes he found the doors of the car open and the amount missing.

Man duped of Rs 50,000

A man allegedly duped Vinay, an employee of Luxmi Electronics, Sector 22, of Rs 50,000 at Bank of Baroda in Sector 22, here today.

The police said the employee of an electronics shop had come to deposit the cash at the bank in the morning. A man standing in a queue offered to fill the voucher for him and took the cash for deposit. However, he fled the scene with the cash.

The police said a case against the unidentified person had been registered at the police station-17.

Police post-22 in-charge Jaspal Singh said: “We have asked for the CCTV footage from the bank and will nab the person soon.”

20 teams for Gurmit hockey meet

The 39th edition of SN Vohra All-India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament “A” grade is being organised by the Rock Rovers Hockey Club from September 19 to 27 at Hockey Stadium, Sector 42 here.

YP Vohra, organising secretary of the tournament, said: “A total of 20 teams will take part in the tournament and international and national-level players will be part of the tourney.”

The teams include: Air India; IOC, Mumbai; BPCL; ONGC; Army XI, Bangalore; BSF; Namdhari XI; Indian Navy; PNB, New Delhi; EME Signals and SRC XI.

The teams have been divided into four pools and Air India, IOC, ONGC and BPCL have been placed directly in the quarter-finals and Army XI, Namdhari XI, BSF and EME have been given the bye in the pre-quarterfinals.

The inaugural match will be played between CFHA and J&K police on September 19 at 4.15 pm. Meanwhile, talking about the health of hockey player Baljeet Singh, Chander Shekhar, ADGP Punjab, and president of the association, said they were extending maximum help to the family of the player.
