Abohar
Students honoured
: About 14 students of Gopi Chand Arya Mahila College, who had excelled in academics and extra-curricular activities at the university level and six teachers including N Ranade, Sharda Grover, Raj Kumar Ahuja, Shakuntala Middha, Surinder Kaur and Dr Meena Mahajan were honoured by Bharat Vikas Parishad (BVP) during the ‘Guru Vandan, Chhatar Abhinandan,’ NGO spokesman Pardeep Garg informed on Monday. Retired teacher Naurang Lal, advocate Sahib Ram and Sita Ram have been elected as president, secretary and cashier, respectively.

Camp for farmers today: The Punjab Grameen Bank will organise farmers' credit and awareness camp at the village Jandwala Meerasangla on Tuesday, informed APS Brar, branch manager, today. Regional officer Ram Bhagat will distribute loans worth Rs 6.5 crore to the farmers during the mega function being arranged jointly by eight branches of the bank.

Annual Ram Lila: Shri Sanatan Dharam Pracharak Ram Natak Club has geared up preparations for the annual Ram Lila to be started from September 12, press secretary KK Sidana informed today. Ashok Gumber will be the director of the show.

Scouting camp concludes: The five-day third step 'Scouting Camp' concluded at the Government High School at the village Kerakhera on Monday. Headmaster Sushil Kumar Goyal informed that 34 scouts and 14 girl guides participated in the camp. In-charge Bhupinder Utreja said that eight km pedestrian hike was one of the important events while the campers exhorted the villagers to desist from alcohol and drug consumption, female foeticide besides inspiring to send each child to the school and plant one sapling at least.

No discretionary quota for tube well connections: The Chairman, Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB), on Monday directed that no tube well connections be issued under “the Chairman’s discretionary quota” till further orders. Giving this information, a spokesman for the PSEB said farmers who had already submitted their applications would be given connections in order of seniority. He said the decision was aimed at facilitating and expediting connections to those who had fulfilled the necessary formalities, including submission of test reports. However, gram panchayats and religious institutions had been exempted from the new orders, he added.

Free check-up camp
: The Adesh Cancer and General Hospital (ACGH) will organise a free medical check-up camp at village Chibbranwali, near here, on September 13. Chief administrator Ashish Sukhija disclosed that Dr Anil Thakwani, a renowned oncologist from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will personally attend to the patients. Pathological and ENT tests will be conducted free of cost. The patients, who will attend the camp and decide to have surgeries at the hospital, will be charged 50 per cent less than normal charges.

Seminar on education Act
: The Sikhya Vikas Manch organised a seminar on the Education Guarantee Act at Senior Citizens Home here. It was addressed by educationalist Dr Piare Lal Garg, journalist Hamir Singh, Devinder Singh Punia of the Democratic Teachers’ Front, Jagjit Singh Nohra of the Sikhya Vikas Manch, Nachatar Singh from the Dehati Mazdoor Morcha and other trade union leaders. Garg said the Act would promote the privatisation of education and reduce privileges of state governments, as their role was not clear in implementing the Act.

Freshers’ party
: The Computer Science Department of R.K. Arya College organised a feshers’ party here on Saturday. Dr S.K. Baria, Principal, presided over the function. A fashion show was organised. In undergraduate classes Maneesh and Sarabjeet Kaur and in postgraduate classes Jaswant Singh and Sikha were declared “Mr Fresher” and “Ms Fresher”, respectively. Kamalpreet Singh and Megha Gautam were declared the best male and female models, respectively.

Medical education programme
: The local unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) organised a continued medical education (CME) programme for doctors on various topics here on Sunday. Doctors from Sangrur, Sunam, Longowal and other surrounding areas attended the programme. Local pediatrician VK Ahuja said breastfeeding during the first few hours after the birth of a baby had a miraculous effect on the baby as well as the mother. Dr Rajiv Puri spoke on “Role of doctors in the event of nuclear war”. Dr Sunil Arya, gastroenterologist, Dr Amandeep Aggarwal, honorary secretary, local IMA branch, and Dr PS Sibia, president also spoke.

Complainant to get Rs 3,000: In a case, related to deficiency in service, the local District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed M/s Jain Shoe Company Liberty Showroom, Sangrur, and Liberty Shoe Company, Karnal (Haryana), either to replace the pair of Liberty shoes of the same quality or refund the price amount of the same i.e. Rs 1,125, to complainant Shalinder Singh of local Ram Basti. The forum has also directed both parties to pay Shalinder a sum of Rs 3,000 in lieu of consolidated amount of compensation. The order shall be complied with within 60 days of communication.

GURGAON
Khula darbars suspended
: Khula darbars that are organised on the first and last Tuesday of every month in the HUDA administrator’s office will remain suspended till the completion of the election process. Stating this here on Monday, a spokesman for the district administration said with the announcement of the Assembly elections in the state, the model code of conduct had come into force during which khula darbars could not be organised.

REWARI
12-yr-old killed
: A 12-year-old boy, Ashish, son of Naresh Kumar of Suthani village, was killed while his friend Anil escaped unhurt when the bicycle they were riding on was reportedly hit by a truck on the Rewari-Suthana road, near Suthana village, 8 km from here, on Sunday. Ashish was admitted to a private hospital here, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Prohibitory orders
: The administration has geared up to ensure free and fair elections in the district. District Magistrate Ajit Joshi had promulgated prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC that will remain in force up till October 26. Under the orders, besides banning the assembly of five or more persons at a place, carrying of any type of firearms have also been banned. Arms licence holders have been directed to deposit their arms in the police station or arms dealers of the area.

BILASPUR
‘Education top priority’
: Education, roads and health and are the subjects to which the government is giving top priority as these are directly connected with the masses. This was stated by Vidhan Sabha Speaker Rikhi Ram Kaundal on Sunday while holding “meet the people” programmes at far off villages of his backward Gehadwin constituency, including Buhaad, Malhote, Jejwin and Bhadoli Kalan. He said under the able leadership of Chief Minister PK Dhumal, the state had succeeded in constructing 1,634 km of roads and 532 villages have been connected with roads during the past one-and-a-half year.

Freedom fighter’s wife dead: Saraswati Devi (90), wife of freedom fighter late Pandit Gopal Dutt Sharma, died after a brief illness in Kanon village near Panjgaain on Sunday. Her funeral at Rambagh on the banks of the Sutlej was largely attended by panchayat representatives, Congress leaders and social organisations who paid their last respects to the departed soul.

One killed: Dev Raj (21) of Chamyon village, near here, was seriously injured when his scooter was knocked down by an unknown speeding vehicle at Barmana on Sunday. He was rushed to the nearby ACC hospital and later to the Regional Hospital here, but he succumbed to his injuries. The police has registered a case and is investigating into the matter. His body was handed over to his relatives after a post-mortem examination.

CHAMBA
Traffic restored: According to official information, vehicular traffic on the Chamba-Holi highway was resumed on Sunday evening after three days. The highway remained blocked at different points due to landslides following heavy rains last week. With opening of the highway the supply of foodstuffs in the remote areas of the district had been restored. 

DALHOUSIE
Two go missing
: Two persons were reported missing while three others were seriously injured when a jeep in which they were travelling swerved off the road and fell into a deep gorge near Cheri Bangu on the Killar-Manali highway via Lahaul on Sunday. The injured, who were rescued with the help of Nepalese labourers, were admitted to the Government Community Health Centre at Killar.

Councillors nominated
: The State Urban Development Department has nominated three members to the local municipal council. A notification under the HP Municipal Council Act, 1994, has been issued by the government in which Vinod Mahajan, Ashok Sharma and Shiv Singh were nominated as councillors of the council. The nominations have been hanging in balance ever since the Prem Kumar Dhumal government had come to power.

Woman robbed  in hospital: A woman patient was robbed off her purse by another woman in Vijaypur Hospital in Samba on Monday. Ailing Renu Devi of Sanura village had gone to the hospital for a medical check up when a woman took advantage of her ailment and snatched the purse. Renu’s brother, who was accompanying her, lodged a complaint with the police. According to the police, the purse contained two gold rings and a gold chain.

Building permission  cases cleared: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) cleared 192 cases of building permission in a meeting of Building Operation Controlling Authority (BOCA) held on Monday. According to a statement issued here, the cleared building permission cases would generate revenue of Rs.22 lakh for the corporation. The meeting was attended by the representatives of Town Planning Organisation, Power Development Department, Public Health and Engineering Department, Joint Commissioner (Administration), Joint commissioner (Works) and Senior Town Planner of the Corporation.

Medicare facility introduced
: Sheri-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura (SKIMS), has introduced three-shift system medicare facilities to the people. The institution during the last one week has provided outdoor treatment facilities to the 5,000 persons and indoor treatment facility to 400 patients, while as 1,000 persons have been treated in Accident and Emergency Hospital during the said period. This was informed at a governing body meeting of the institution held under the Chairmanship of Director, SKIMS, Abdul Hamid Zargar.

Naresh elected as MLC:Naresh Kumar Gupta has been elected unopposed as a member of the Legislative Council. The seat had fallen vacant due to the resignation of Mohammad Sharief Bhat (Niaz) from Doda district. Mohammad Ramzan, secretary, Legislative Assembly, who was the returning officer for the election, declared the result here this afternoon, an official spokesman said.

2 LeT ultras nabbed:The police has arrested two militants of the Lashkar-e-Toiba in the Tral area of Awantipora police district today.Sources said the two militants, Mudassir and Irshad, were arrested after the police got a tip-off regarding their presence in a hideout. The police party took them by surprise and nabbed them. Both are local residents. Some arms and ammunition were seized from them. They were being questioned about their links with other militants, a large number of whom belonging to several outfits had found a safe haven in the hilly and rugged terrains of Tral.
