Garbage Plant Mess
Pollution panel pins blame on MC

Chandigarh, August 25
The campaign by Mayor Kamlesh and certain councillors of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) to nail the promoters of the Dadu Majra garbage processing plant on the issue of foul smell notwithstanding, the inquiry committee of the Chandigarh administration has put the blame squarely on the civic body for the mess.

2 bombshells found at plant site
Chandigarh, August 25
Two bombshells were found from trash in the garbage processing plant in Dadu Majra here this afternoon. According to the police, it received information around 2:45 pm from the plant that two bomb-like heavy objects were found in the trash.

Woman raped in temple dharamshala
Panchkula, August 25
The police has booked a resident of Sector 25 for allegedly raping a 52-year-old woman at the Mata Mansa Devi dharamshala on Friday night. The complainant, a resident of Rewari, alleged that she was staying at the dharamshala as a case related to her property was pending in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Move on declaring him PO
Chandigarh, August 25
The tirade of Congress councillor and former chairman of the market committee Devinder Singh Babla, accusing the UT Administrator of framing him up in a cheating case, has made the Chandigarh Police to contemplate initiating proceedings for declaring him a proclaimed offender (PO).

In its ongoing efforts to bring in control the rising prices of the essential commodities in the city, a meeting was called by the Chandigarh Administration here today. Finance Secretary Sanjay Kumar headed the meeting, which was attended by Deputy Commissioner-cum-Director, Food and Supplies, R. K. Rao, Joint Director, Food and Supplies, Prerna Puri, and representatives of the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal (CBM) and market associations.

Tents for VIPs’ guards removed

Encroachers challaned in Sec 17, 34
Chandigarh, August 25
Adopting zero-tolerance policy towards encroachers, a team of enforcement officials, under the supervision of MC Secretary Kamlesh along with chairman of the enforcement committee M P S Chawla, today conducted a special drive to remove encroachments from Sector 17 here.

Structures razed in Sector 44
Chandigarh, August 25
The enforcement staff of the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) today removed encroachments from in front of at least three houses in Sector 44-C here today. According to sources, the owners of the CHB dwelling units had encroached upon public land by erecting concrete structures.

BSNL slashes installation charges

BSNL has reduced the installation charges for its landline customers from Rs 500 to Rs 250. Also, there would be no installation charges for the customers who have their own telephone sets.

Post of SP (City) mooted

The Chandigarh Police has mooted a proposal to the UT for posting IPS officer Madur Verma as SP (City). Sources said the police had been contemplating to create the post of SP for Madur Verma after he got extension of six months following his promotion recently.

Acting tough on the issue of violation of dress code in schools, the Director, Public Instructions (Schools), today marked an inquiry into the matter. The issue that came to light after The Tribune highlighted the discrepancies in dress code in Government Girls Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 18, against the rules of the UT Education Department.

Teachers go on mass leave

School qualifies for national science exhibition

Shri Guru Harkrishan Model School, Sector 38, here, has qualified for the National CBSE Science Exhibition to be held in September/October in New Delhi. The school won in the category of agriculture with the theme of “Food Security and Quality Measures” at the science exhibition held recently in Ludhiana.

Robbers strike at SBoP branch
Decamp with Rs 3 lakh; lock staff in a room before fleeing
Fatehgarh Sahib, August 25
Five armed robbers with covered faces today looted Rs 3 lakh from the State Bank of Patiala (SBoP) branch at Shamashpur village near Amloh. The robbers came at around 1.15 pm on three bikes and after showing pistols and sharp-edged weapons to the staff, took away Rs 3 lakh from the counter of bank.

Rs 50,000, jewellery stolen
Dera Bassi, August 25
Thieves decamped with cash and jewellery after breaking in to a house in Preet Colony, Dera Bassi. The police said Palwinder Singh, owner of the house, said he had gone for pilgrimage on August 21, along with his family, while returning back, they found that the lock of the main door was broken.

Training programme for children

District employment generation and training officer Iqbal Singh yesterday said a training programme was held for the children of various schools in Fatehgarh Sahib. Students of Ashoka Senior Secondary School, Government Senior Secondary School, Kotla Bijwara, Randhawa, Mustafabad, Vajidpur, Nogawan, Dadu Majra and Badali Mai Ki were imparted training under this session, which continued for a week.
