Robbers strike at SBoP branch
Fatehgarh Sahib, August 25 The robbers came at around 1.15 pm on three bikes and after showing pistols and sharp-edged weapons to the staff, took away Rs 3 lakh from the counter of bank. The robbers also locked all the staff members, customers and the manager of the bank in a room before fleeing. The eyewitnesses told the police that the guard of bank had left a few minutes before the incident for some work after taking permission from bank officials. Three of the accused were wearing turban and one of them was around six feet tall. Senior police officials, including the IG, SSP and the area SP reached the spot and take stock of the situation. Fatehgarh Sahib SSP Kaustubh Sharma said a case had been registered and the police had launched a hunt to nab the accused. The adjoining districts have also been alerted, he said, adding that a team of forensic experts had taken finger prints from the bank. |

Rs 50,000, jewellery stolen
Dera Bassi, August 25 The police said Palwinder Singh, owner of the house, said he had gone for pilgrimage on August 21, along with his family, while returning back, they found that the lock of the main door was broken. He told to the police that the thieves ransacked his house and the things were scattered all around. They discovered that cash around Rs 50,000, 70 gm of gold and 40 gm of of silver jewellery were missing from the almirah. The police has registered a complaint and started further investigation. Mohali: Sita Devi, who was arrested yesterday for killing her one-year-old son, Rakesh, was produced in the local court today, from where she had been sent on judicial remand. On Sunday, she killed her son and buried the body under packaging material at industrial unit in Industrial Area, Phase IX. The infant’s body was found on Monday, after her family members went around looking for Rakesh. She told the family members that she had killed her son. Patiala, August 25 A team of doctors from Rajindra Hospital headed by society medical officer and professor and head of eye department, Dr Dharamvir Chalia, examined the patients. Goods train derails
Rajpura, August 25 The goods train first got derailed on Sunday late night near Saraibanjara village. Later, the traffic was restored. The Railways staff from Ambala was called for this purpose. When the officials tried to start the train, one bogie again got derailed this morning. The train could be put back on track only in the afternoon. Till then the traffic bound for Delhi remained disrupted causing delay to passenger trains. |

Consumer Forum
Chandigarh, August 25 The forum has also directed the institute to refund Rs 6,700 to the student for causing mental and physical harassment and for indulging in unfair trade practices. The forum, in its orders, observed that it was unfortunate that in the name of education, teaching shops in the form of commercial organisation had emerged to entrap the innocent students in their net in order to make quick and easy money by fleecing them through flashy advertisements of bright future. These were the steps in the direction of unfair trade practice, whereby fake degrees were issued by such institutions. This was a slur on the fair and noble profession of teaching and such acts needed to be condemned. The complainant, Shagun, a resident of Sector 15, took admission in the institute for a course of diploma in medical laboratory technician in May, 2006, and deposited Rs 15,000 as admission fee and paid Rs 1,500 per month beside Rs 25,000 paid for practical experiments. However, she was not issued any receipt. It was stated that the institute was to issue certificate after the completion of the course. However, after the completion of one year, the institute gave assurance to the complainant that she had completed the diploma in medical laboratory technician and also completed one year in BSc course and of degree in BSc. He demanded Rs 15,000 as admission fee and Rs 8,500 as examination fee, which complainant paid to him. Thereafter, Shagun asked Ajay Rana of the institute to first issue her certificate, but he lingered on the matter. Later on, the complainant came to know that the institute was not affiliated to any organisation, the matter was reported to the police and a criminal case was pending against the institute. |

Consumer forum penalises builder
Chandigarh, August 25 The builder has also been directed to pay a compensation at the rate of Rs 5 per square feet per month with effect from December 1, 2006, till the possession is handed over to him. The complainant, Paramvir Singh, a resident of Mohali, had applied for one unit on November 20, 2006, in Freenfield Towers on the VIP road, Zirakpur, and had deposited the booking amount of Rs 50,000. He was allotted Unit no. A-V-4, 2BR, Vth floor, for a sum of Rs 17,50,000. Ninety per cent of the price amount was to be paid in four different instalments as per the schedule of the payment, whereas 10 per cent of the amount plus stamp duty and any other charges were to be paid to the builder at the time of handing over the possession, which they
had to deliver by November 21, 2008. The complainant paid all the four instalments plus the booking amount as per the payment schedule. In spite of this, the builder failed to deliver the possession of the unit by due date and instead, stopped the construction of the apartments. In its reply filed before the forum, the builder stated that the construction was stopped due to recession in the market and non-cooperation of the bank from whom the builder had made an arrangement for getting loans and also due to the delayed payments made by customers. |

Travel agent held for cheating
Chandigarh, August 25 According to the police, Kulwinder Singh of Phase X, Mohali, had filed a complaint, alleging that Ranjit Singh of Sector 44-A, proprietor of Overseas Solution Private Limited in Sector-17-E, had taken Rs 4 lakh in advance from him and remaining 15 lakh was to be paid after providing a Canadian visa to both his children. In order to win over his trust, the accused got him issued a certificate of Canadian Construction Essentials along with mark-sheets from King Edwards College of Management and Technology to his children. Later, he neither sent them abroad nor returned their amount. Rather the accused issued the complainant two post-dated cheques, which were dishonoured. A case of cheating and criminal conspiracy under Sections 420 and 120-B of the IPC and Section 24 of the Immigration Act has been registered. The accused was arrested from the Sector 44 market and would be produced in court. |

Police party attacked; five held
Chandigarh, August 25 The accused attacked a police party that went to the spot following information of a brawl around midnight. The miscreants pelted the police party with stones and assaulted the policemen with sticks leaving two of them injured. The miscreants also smashed the windscreen of the police Gypsy. The cops called additional police force to handle the situation. However, the assailants managed to flee from the spot. The police conducted raids in the locality and managed to nab the assailants who were hiding in a room. The police registered a case of rioting, attempt to murder, causing grievous injuries and obstructing government servants from discharging their official duties under various sections of the IPC. The accused have been identified as Chinky, Vijay, Ashish, Kalu and Manoj, all in their early twenties, and produced them before a local court which sent them to judicial custody. According to the police, Kamla Devi of Vikas Nagar, Mauli Jagran, informed the police at around 11.30 pm that her two sons were quarrelling. Before the police party reached the spot, the complainant said that one of her sons Chinky had run away. She did not file any complaint and the police returned. The police said the woman again called up the police around 12.40 am informing that a clash was about to begin between her sons as Chinky had come along with his friends armed with batons and sticks. On seeing the police vehicle, Chinky and his friend begin pelting it with stones. Assistant sub-inspector Manjit Singh and constable Puran Chand came out of their vehicle to nab the miscreants. Puran Chand suffered two blows on his head while Manjit Singh hurt his arm badly in the assault. Puran Chand fell on the ground, however the assailants kept on thrashing him. The in charge of the Mauli Jagran police post said that additional force was called to control the situation. The injured were rushed to the Sector 16 Government Multi-Specialty Hospital. |

Man held posing as doc in PGI
Chandigarh, August 25 White coat and stethoscope around the neck helped him to pass the emergency entrance but his Haryanvi accent gave way, making a doctor suspicious about his credentials. The doctor subsequently informed security guards, who caught him and handed over to the police immediately. The police said after investigation, it found that he was not a doctor and came to the PGI to meet his relative, who was admitted in emergency yesterday after an accident. “Medicines, along with Rs 6,000 was found in his pocket. He was arrested and a case of impersonation has been registered against him. A PGI spokesperson said as pass was not available with him, he tried to enter in doctor’s dress. |
