Abohar
Guneet crowned as Ms Abohar
: Guneet Tinna of Gopi Chand Arya Mahila College here was crowned as Ms Abohar during the Ms Punjabi-2009 show organised by the PTC TV channel. Bharti Phutela of the same institution was declared Runner-up. Principal Dr Neelam Arun Mittu, while congratulating the winners, hoped they would shine in the next round also. Notably, Neha of this college had won the title last year.

Saplings planted: Saplings were planted by the students to further beautify the DAV College campus during the one-day NSS camp that was organised by the in-charge Virender Setia on Tuesday. Principal Dr BB Sharma, while addressing the students in the auditorium, threw light on the objects and activities of the National Service Scheme. Sharma was joined by the teachers including Meenakshi Munjal, Bharti and Vijay Chhabra in planting saplings.

Rebuilding boundary wall: The Citizens Awareness Forum has urged the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) to get boundary wall of the local railway complex reconstructed. In a memorandum faxed to the DRM on Tuesday, the NGO informed that the boundary wall that separated the JP Park from the railway complex had collapsed long back and stray cattle and drug addicts were using the space as thoroughfare. The Forum feared that this could lead to accidents.

Khalsa college team wins cross-country race
: The team of Khalsa College for Women earned the first place in the inter-college competition of cross-country race of the Guru Nanak Dev University. Members of the college team were Bhupinder Kaur, Amritpal Kaur, Amandeep Kaur, Amritpal Kaur, Baljit Kaur and Pawandeep Kaur.

PSEB office-bearers: The PSEB Engineers’ Association unanimously elected office bearers including Senior Acting Engineer Ishwar Das as Regional Secretary and Assistant Executive Engineer Sarbjit Sharma as Zonal member. The decision was taken in a meeting held by the Association recently.

MA psychology topper: Harleen Arora has topped in the MA (final) Psychology exam by securing 76 per cent marks in aggregate in the examination conducted by the Guru Nanak Dev University in April this year. Harleen, who aspires to become an IAS officer, gives the credit of her success to the hard work she has put in and also her parents and teachers who have constantly encouraged her to do well.

Man held with 7 kg poppy husk
: The Civil Lines police arrested one person along with 7 kg of poppy husk.SSP Dr Naresh Arora told mediapersons here today (Tuesday) that a police party had laid a naka on Dera Road, near Grain Market, Batala. It saw a person going on his scooter and signalled him to stop. The police seized 7 kg of poppy husk from him.He was identified as Sukhdev Singh of Ballewal.

Tourist centres at Sangrur, Faridkot
: In a decision of the Tourism and Cultural Affairs Department, Sangrur and Faridkot districts have been chosen to developed as tourist centres. Giving this information here on Tuesday, Punjab Tourism and Cultural Affairs Minister Hira Singh Gabria said both cities and their surrounding areas would be developed. The Centre would provide 85 per cent aid and the remaining would be spent by the state government. A Delhi-based consultant company has been giving the responsibility for the project.

Youth awareness campaign
: A programme was organised at the Government Elementary School of village Bandiwala, 10 km from here by the Marshall Academy, Fazilka, under the ‘Rural Youth Awareness Campaign’. The organiser’s advocate, Sanjeev Bansal Marshall, Social Welfare Society president, Raj Kishore Kalra and Pawan Kumar, teacher, gave valuable tips to the students on this occasion. A quiz programme was organised, in which, the students, who gave the right answers, were honoured.

Van Mahotsav at DAV College:
The students and staff members of the DAV College for Women organised 'Van Mahotsav' on the college premises where Bakshish Singh Chahal, chief agriculture officer was the chief guest. Chahal exhorted the students to plant more and more trees to safeguard the environment. Harbhajan Singh Chawla, chairman, Patanjali Yog Samiti and Pushpinder Walia, principal, also addressed the students.

Health club inaugurated: In an impressive function held here on Monday evening, the DC Kamal Kishore Yadav inaugurated the newly constructed family hall and health club on the premises of Satluj Club. On the occasion, addressing the gathering comprising senior officials and members of the club, Yadav said efforts will be made to bring this club at par with the best clubs in the state. He said this newly renovated club will also seek affiliation to service clubs in other towns and cities within and outside the state. SPS Parmar, the SSP, said the club management should evolve a criterion to ensure that good people become member of the club, adding that this club will go a long way in filling the void in absence of any good place to spend evenings in comfortable and enjoyable manner with family and friends. Later, members of the executive committee of the club thanked the DC-cum-president and other officials for their valuable contribution.

Session inaugurated
: The academic session at the first integrated campus of the state set up under public private participation format by the Doaba Group of Colleges at nearby Chhokeran village was formally inaugurated on Monday. Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Chaudhary Nand Lal was the chief guest at the ceremony, which was attended by prominent academicians, social and political leaders, parents and students of the area. Speaking on the occasion, Lal said the SAD-BJP government was committed to provide better education facilities to the youth, especially those belonging to the rural background, for enabling them to face the challenges ahead in the era of globalisation. Recently, Dr. Daljit Singh, former counselor (S&T), Scientific Attaché at the Indian Embassy in USA, has joined the Doaba Group. Besides, the group has also signed a MoU with the Univesities of Wolverhampton, UK and Winniepeg, Mantova, Canada for study and faculty exchange for the betterment of the students.

Save energy awareness drive: The KC Group of Education Institutes observed a week-long “Save Energy Awareness Drive” at its various schools and colleges here and in Himachal Pardesh, with a view to mobilise students to save energy to combat the growing menace of global warming, depleting underground water level, scarcity of electricity etc. The seminars were organised at different institutes in which important tips were given to the students for saving energy for a brighter future.

MEd results declared: Punjabi University has declared the results of MEd course (2009-11) that was conducted on August 23, 2009. Giving this information the co-coordinator, MEd entrance test said the result were also available on university website www.punjabiuniversity.ac.in and department website www.dccpbi.com.

Girl crushed to death
: Fourteen-year-old Poonam, a student of class VI in Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sangrur, was crushed to death by a truck here on Tuesday when she was returning home after school. The police has registered a case against the driver of the truck and one more person under Sections 279, 304-A and 427, IPC.

Fake RCs, permits
: A racket involving preparation and issuing of fake registration certificates (RC), permits and no objection certificates (NOC) of vehicles has been unearthed in the district with the arrest of two persons and registration of a case against four employees of the RTA office here. The arrested persons have remanded to police custody by a local court. According to police sources, two persons identified as Satish, a resident of Housing Board Colony, and Dalip of Patiala Chowk locality here had been operating from an office located in the supermarket here. They had been allegedly preparing fake RCs, permits, ration cards and NOCs required for the resale of vehicles with the connivance of certain employees of the RTA office here. As many as 12 fake RCs, 15 permits and some ration card copies were recovered by the police, which conducted a raid on the office on Monday night.

One booked
: The police has booked a mobile service provider for issuing SIM cards on fake identities. Hamirpur SP Asif Jalal said, “We had received complaints that an agent of Idea cellular company, who had set up a kiosk outside the degree college, was issuing SIM cards on forged documents and fake identities, after which the police acted against the agent.” He said, “The agent has been booked under Section 420 of the IPC.”

‘Fill vacant posts’: The Himachal Pradesh Ex-servicemen League has demanded filling of post of deputy director and all other posts in the Sainik Welfare Department. In a release, chairman of the league Brig Dalip Singh (retd) said in absence of the deputy director in the Sainik Welfare Department several works related to welfare of widows and children of ex-servicemen were stuck up since long time.

Jammu
Man held for firing in air
: The police arrested Manohar Lal of Satrian village in RS Pura after he fired in the air twice from his licensed gun from the rooftop of his residence to celebrate the birth of his grandson. However, his act created panic among locals, mistaking it for a militant attack. The police and some soldiers from a nearby Army camp rushed to the village and arrested Manohar Lal. A case has been registered against him.

Denial of PF alleged: The United Sikh Council, Jammu and Kashmir, has alleged that affluent businessmen of the state were exploiting the poor working class by denying it the PF benefits, Kuldeep Singh, chairman of the council, said. He urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene and stop this exploitation He alleged that employers were doing this in connivance with employees of the PF Department.

Girl dies in accident: Lekha Devi (8) was killed on the spot while her father, Swarn Singh, mother Sunita Devi and brother Akash sustained injuries after their motorcycle was hit by a car in Hiranagar on the Jammu-Pathankot national highway on Monday. The dead as well as the injured were shifted to the local Government Medical College.

Woman commits suicide
: A 25-year-old woman committed suicide allegedly by setting herself ablaze in the outskirts of the city on Tuesday, a police spokesman said. Fatima Akhter set herself on fire after sprinkling kerosene in her house at Tiploo Mohalla in the Anchar area of Soura, near here, the spokesman said. A case had been registered and investigations were on to ascertain the cause of the incident.
