Talent hunt:
Triptjit Kaur was adjudged the most talented student during the ‘Talent Hunt’ competitions, that were held at the LRS DAV Senior Secondary School here on  Friday.

Dead: A PRTC mechanic, Jeet Singh (53), was crushed to death in Bathinda on Friday when the bus he was repairing fell on him when the jack was removed accidentally. He was an Abohar resident, sources said.

MA (sociology-II) results today:
The results of the MA (sociology) Part-II examination conducted by Guru Nanak Dev University in April would be declared tomorrow. According to Dr R.K. Bedi, professor in charge (examinations), the results would be available on the university website www.gndu.ac.in on the same day after 5 pm.

Ghanshyam gets Rajiv Gandhi award:
Ghanshyam Singh, a teacher working in the semi-urban area of Fatehgarh Churian (Gurdaspur), was given the Rajiv Gandhi Shiromani award. Ghanshyam has been instrumental in running Adarsh College for Girls for more than 28 years. He has been running an institute (Adarsh Computer Remote Learning Centre, affiliated to Punjab Technical University under the distance education programme) for the past more than nine years. E.S.L. Narsimhan, Governor of Chhatisgarh, gave away the award to Ghanshyam on August 19 in the symposium which was presided over by Dr Bhishma Narain Singh, ex-Governor of Tamil Nadu and Assam, and Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary, Governor of Meghalaya.

Pedestrian killed
: A pedestrian was killed when he was hit by a motorcycle at Dalla village, near Qadian, on Wednesday evening. Surinder Singh Malhi, resident of Railway Road, Partap Nagar, was going to his house on foot when he was hit by the motorcycle coming from the opposite side. Surinder Singh died on the spot due to a head injury. A case has been registered.

Posting of 6 DIGs ordered
: The Punjab government on Thursday ordered the posting of six DIGs and transferred two PPS officers. Kuldeep Singh has been posted DIG, Vigilance Bureau, Chandigarh; RL Bhagat DIG, Vigilance Bureau, Jalandhar; Parampal Singh Sidhu DIG, Border Range, Amritsar; Gurpreet Kaur Deo DIG, Administration, CPO, Chandigarh; SK Asthana DIG, Patiala Range, Patiala, and Balbir Kumar Bawa DIG, Training, CPO, Chandigarh. Meanwhile, Mandeep Singh becomes Commandant first, IRB, Patiala (Excise Battalion) and Inder Mohan Singh has been posted Commandant sixth, IRB Battalion, Ladda Kothi, Sangrur (Excise Battalion).

Martyr remembered
: The ninth martyrdom anniversary of Brig Balwinder Singh Shergill was observed here on Friday. Brigadier Shergill had sacrificed his life for the country on August 21, 2000, in Kupwara sector in the Jammu and Kashmir. At the shardhanjli samaroh, tributes were paid to the martyr by Barnala DC Harkesh Singh Sidhu, Brigadier Shergill’s elder brother and VC of the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, Dr Shavinder Singh Gill, Chairman, Sangrur District Planning Committee, Gobind Singh Longowal, ex-Chairman, Barnala Improvement Trust, Paramjit Singh Mann, Dr Teja Singh Tilak and Jathedar Bharpur Singh Dhanaula. On the occasion, the DC also inaugurated a library in memory of Brigadier Shergill. 

JALANDHAR
Land grab case: HC directs DIG to probe:
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the DIG, Jalandhar Range, to probe the alleged land grab bid by Adampur MLA Sarabjit Singh Makkar and dispose of the case. Jagjit Singh Gill, son of Partap Singh, an NRI, had filed a case in the HC alleging that the MLA had been trying to grab their land at Raipur Rasulpur village. He also had alleged that the MLA had filed a false case against him. Makkar has been accused of grabbing land of an NRI of Raipur Rasulpur village and his cousin Gurdeep Singh, resident of Pilibhit, UP. The land was with Swaran Singh of Manan village in Kartarpur on power of attorney. 

Counselling centre: Virk Fertility Hospital opened its counselling centre in Model Town, Ludhiana, on Wednesday. Hospital director Dr S.P.S Virk said that the centre had been opened for the facility of infertile couples in Ludhiana and its nearby areas. A team of specialists from Jalandhar would examine patients in Ludhiana on every Wednesday and Saturday and advise them regarding treatment.

Dr Virk invited: Dr HS Virk, Director, Research Centre, DAVIET, Jalandhar, has been invited by the organising committee of Radiation Effects in Insulators to present a research paper at the international conference in the University of Padva, Italy. The conference will begin on August 30 and conclude on September 4. The Department of Science and Technology of the Union government has funded Dr Virk’s visit to Italy.

BJP leader bereaved
: Octogenarian Uma Dutt Sharma, father of Ashwani Sharma, General Secretary of the Punjab BJP, died on Thursday after a brief illness. A large number of persons, including MLAs, ministers and senior party leaders attended the funeral here on Friday.

SANGRUR
18 students selected
: Eighteen students of the local Bhai Gurdas Institute of Engineering and Technology (BGIET) were selected during a placement activity conducted at the campus on Thursday by officials of Alliant Technologies Private Limited, Kolkota. The selected students have been offered a package of Rs 1.8 lakh per annum. The company has also offered them Rs 6,000 per month as stipend during their training session, according to chairman, Bhai Gurdas Group of Institutions, Hakam Singh Jawandha.

Appointed: The Chandigarh administration has appointed Ajoy Sharma, a Punjab-cadre 1999-batch IAS officer, as Joint Secretary, Finance, on inter-state deputation for a period of three years. 

Honoured: Child artiste Pragati Trikha was honoured by DPI (Schools) Samwartak Singh in a function at Sacred Heart School, Sector 26. A student of Class IX, she was honoured for her exceptional achievements in the field of acting. At the age of 14, she has acted in eight Bollywood films.

MEWAT
Panchayat organised
: A panchayat was organised by people of Mewat at Badkali Chowk here on Friday to thank Chaudhary of Mewat Zakir Hussain and others for fighting to get justice for three innocent persons arrested by the Haryana police in connection with the scuffle that took place on August 2. The Mewat Sangharsh Samiti under the leadership of Zakir Hussain had staged an indefinite protest demanding the release of arrested persons. 

REWARI
Woman drowned
: Bimla Yadav (45), wife of Lal Chand Yadav of Guriani village, reportedly drowned into a canal in Murlipur village, near Jatusana, on Thursday. Her body was taken out of the canal on Friday. Sources said the woman, who had been suffering from mental discomfiture, came to the place unnoticed by other members of the family and then apparently jumped into the canal.

Party workers’ meeting: Man Singh Manhera, national general secretary of the BSP and in charge of party affairs in Haryana, said here on Friday that the BSP had welded people of all communities into a compact whole in sharp contrast to the Congress which he alleged had disintegrated the Indian society into numerous casteist divisions and subdivisions as well as the BJP which had divided the people in the name of religion. He said this at a district-level convention of party workers.

SIRSA
Prohibitory orders
: Brick-kiln owners in Sirsa district will no longer be able to use wheat straw, stubble, rice husk or any other item used as animal fodder as fuel for their furnaces. In view of the shortfall in rains and a draught-like situation prevailing in certain parts of the district, District Magistrate Yudhbir Singh Khyalia has issued prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC, banning burning of all such items by brick-kiln owners. 

Appointed: Hans Raj, SHO of Sadar police station, Sirsa, has been appointed SHO, city police station, by SP Subhash Yadav against Ajay Sharma, who had earlier been transferred as District Inspector. According to a police spokesman, Gurdial Singh, SHO, Kalanwali police station, has been transferred to Sadar police station, Sirsa, in place of Hans Raj, while Mahabir Singh, Sub-Inspector in the Kalanwali police station, has been given the charge of SHO there.

Nod to 230 building permissions:
The building operation controlling authority of the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) in a meeting held under the chairmanship of its commissioner has cleared 230 cases of building permissions. Representatives of the PDD, PHE, town planning, besides the joint commissioner and senior town planner of the JMC attended the meeting. The building permission cases cleared would generate revenue of Rs 25 lakh for the corporation.

NC leader remembered: The Jammu urban unit of the NC on Friday paid tributes to former minister the late Bashir Ahmed Kichloo on his death anniversary. At a function held here, district president of the party Rajesh Bakshi described the late Kichloo as a visionary leader. Among others who paid homage to the departed leader include Ayub Malik, Sanjay Gupta and Parvinder Singh. 

1 killed in mishap: Ved Prakash (70) of Gandhi Nagar was killed when a mini-truck hit him in Gole Market while he was crossing the road during a morning walk on Thursday. He was taken to the Government Medical College where he succumbed to his injuries. Truck driver Kartar Chand of Majalta tehsil was arrested and the vehicle impounded. A case has been registered.

Rs 4.12-cr annual plan for Samba: The state government has approved an Rs 4.12-crore annual plan for the border areas of Samba district under the border area development programme, said Samba district development commissioner Saurab Bhagat while having a detailed review of various ongoing works in the district.

Information bureau sought: The Jammu University Research Scholars Executive Association (JURSEA) has demanded an information bureau and parking lots in the University of Jammu. Vikas Sharma, president of the researchers’ body, said on Friday that fresh entrants to the campus were faced with hardships in the absence of any information bureau and parking lots in the campus. He flayed the newly introduced examination development fund requiring a candidate to shell out Rs 500. 

Demonstration staged: Residents and members of various organisations staged a demonstration in Samba on Friday. They have been demanding a thorough probe into the killing of peace activist Hoshiar Singh and his wife Sadhi Bala in a “terrorist attack” last year. The protesters shouted slogans and marched towards the main Bazaar. Members of the Samba Bar Association also joined the rally. Meanwhile, the relay hunger strike by members of various political organisations and the Internationalist Democratic Party entered 42nd day. 

Varsity officers’ body:The Jammu University Officers Welfare Association elected Dr Jatinder Khajuria and Dr TS Khan as its presidents on Friday. While Bihari Lal Bhat and TS Khan were elected vice-presidents,. RS Dalpatia and Ashwani Kumar were chosen as general secretary and treasurer, respectively. Bihari Lal, Darshan Lal Sharma, Kailash Gupta, Paramjit Sharma and Yoginder Gupta were elected as executive committee members. Later, the body called upon upon Vice-Chancellor Varun Sahni, assuring him of working in the interest of the institution.

Cop drowns
: A policeman drowned in the Jhelum in Baramulla district on Friday, officials said. Constable Irfan Ahmad drowned while taking bath near the Subsidiary Training Centre (STC) at Sheeri, nearly 65 km from here, on the Srinagar-Uri national highway. Efforts are on to recover the body a police spokesman said.

Volleyball tourney begins
: The annual under-19 Inter-District Volleyball tournament (boys and girls) was inaugurated by Udhampur DC Ajay Khajuria on Friday. In all nine teams of boys and four teams of girls drawn from different districts of Jammu division are participating in the tournament. 

Shankri mela ends: Thousands of people from various places thronged the Shankri Devta temple on Friday on the concluding day of the annual festival. Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand was the chief guest on the occasion. Addressing a gathering, the Deputy CM said such festivals gave an opportunity to people from different areas to share their experiences. He planted deodar trees at the site of Shankri Devta and urged the people to plant at least 10 trees in their vicinity. — TNS
