Man arrested for double murder
Rajpura, August 21 The accused has been identified as Paramjit Singh, running a puncture mending shop here. DSP Rashpal Singh Hara said the accused had killed his mother-in-law Shakuntala (55) and her mother Krishna Devi (70) on June 26. He took both of them to a canal near Ganda Kheri village around 10 pm over the pretext of performing some prayer adjoining the canal and pushed them into it. Both women drowned and their bodies were recovered after few days. The police suspected the role of Paramjit and interrogated him. During the interrogation he admitted to have committed the crime. He revealed that his mother-in-law had been abusing him for the past many months and she also made fun of his limping. Paramjit told the police that Krishna Devi had come to their home few days ago. “I wanted to push only Shakuntala. But she refused to go alone and asked her mother Krishna to join us,” he said. He added that his brother-in-law had some pimples on his face, which gave him spoilt looks. Paramjit told Shakuntala that performing some pooja would improve his looks. The police has registered a case in this connection. |

50 saplings planted
Patiala, August 21 The occasion was presided over by Municipal Corporation Commissioner Manjit Singh Narang. The Rotary Club, Patiala, sponsored the event. Rotary Club president OP Gupta, Mid Town, along with 20 members of the club was present on the occasion. Fifty saplings were planted by the girl students of BA Ist year. These students during their three-year stay in the college will nurture these saplings and watch them grow. This will also inculcate the value and importance of trees in them. Principal of college, Dr Daisy Walia, highlighted the importance of tree plantation to balance ecology. The students also presented a cultural programme. |

Ex-serviceman hit by train, killed
Dera Bassi, August 21 According to railway police sources, the incident took place around 7.25 am when Sukhdev Singh was crossing the railway track. He failed to hear the sound of the train and was hit by it. He died on the spot. The police said the body of the deceased has been handed over to the family after conducting the postmortem at theCivil Hospital, Dera Bassi, and inquest proceedings under Section 174 of of the CrPC has been started. |

Gurdeep is MC vice-president
Bassi Pathana, August 21 SDM Parneet Shergill presided over the election meeting, which was attended by nine councillors, whereas four councillors belonging to the warring faction abstained from the meeting. Council president Kulbhushan Malhotra proposed the name of Gurdeep Singh, while Ranbir Singh seconded his name and all present councillors unanimously elected him as the vice-president. After the election, Kulbhushan Malhotra appreciated the efforts of MLA Didar Singh Bhatti and Rajesh Pal Singh Lalli in bringing unanimity. He urged the MLA to get funds sanctioned from the government for the development of the town. |

Nine injured in auto-car collision
Kharar, August 21 An auto-rickshaw carrying students from Doaba Group of Colleges had a head-on collision with a Swift coming from the opposite direction near Sahauran village on National Highway 21. The Swift was bound for Kurali, while the auto- rickshaw was coming towards Kharar bus stand. As per the police, the car’s tyre burst and the driver was unable to control the vehicle, which rammed into the auto-rickshaw injuring the auto driver, Lakhbir Singh, and two students -- Gurbir Singh and Sakshi -- critically. All three were taken to the Civil Hospital, Kharar, and further rushed to the PGI, Chandigarh. The other students have been identified as Meenakshi, Shalini, Rajinder, Gurpreet, and three others. Most of them live as paying guests in Kharar. The police was trying to trace the driver of the Swift, who was said to be under observation at Civil Hospital, Kurali. No case has been registered so far. |

Govt school principal honoured
Ambala, August 21 According to sources, when the administration started the enrolment of new voters, Kalra along with his staff members visited the village and explained to the villagers the importance of photo identity cards. As a result, 100 per cent eligible voters enrolled their name in the voters’ list. In the recent Lok Sabha elections it was the only village in the block where 100 per cent voters cast their votes by presenting the photo identity cards. Ambala division Commissioner Mohinder Kumar in a function presented a certificate of appreciation to Kalra. Ambala Deputy Commissioner Samir Pal Saro, who was the returning officer of Ambala parliamentary seat, was also present. |

Students bring laurels to engg college
Kharar, August 21 Students Meenakshi Kapoor, Radhika Sharma and Simran Kaur Channa topped in their respective branches by securing 89 per cent, 87 per cent and 85 per cent marks, respectively. Out of 218 students, 90 of them secured more than 70 per cent marks and 25 students secured more than 80 marks. Students exhibited best result in communication skills with 96 per cent overall pass percentage, 93 per cent in FCPIT, 87 per cent in physics, 75 per cent in chemistry, 89 per cent in BEEE, 93 per cent in ED and 75 per cent in mathematics. Vice-chairman of Rayat and Bahra group Gurvinder Singh Bahra and managing director Prof CM Bahl and institute director Dr Piush Verma congratulated the students. |

Patiala, August 21 He asked audience not to be panicky about the spread of swine flu rather they should be aware about it and take a few precautionary measures to face this pandemic. Children below the age of 12 months and old people above 65 years are more vulnerable. Fever, cough, sore throat, cold, headache, fatigue and vomiting are the symptoms of the disease. But the doctor cannot diagnose the disease without the clinical test. |

Burail Jailbreak Case
Chandigarh, August 21 Baljeet, who had allegedly provided a car to Jagtar Singh Tara, Jagtar Singh Hawara and Paramjit Singh Bheora to escape from Burail Jail on January 21, 2004, died at the PGI. She was suffering from cancer. The application was moved today in a local court as a formal intimation, but it would require a police verification to confirm the same as a procedural course. It must be recalled that Baljeet had allegedly provided a Maruti 800 to the accused after the jailbreak in which they travelled to Fatehgarh Sahib. The case relates to the escape of the three alleged assassins of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh and another undertrial Devi Singh, who tunnelled their way out of the high-security Burail Jail on the night of January 21, 2004. Baljeet, wife of Lakhwinder Singh, was given the task of arranging for transport and carrying messages of Hawara from the jail to those engaged for the job outside. Hawara would reportedly send a message to Lakhwinder who passed it on to Baljeet. Baljeet was arrested on January 31. |

Man caught stealing; thrashed
Chandigarh, August 21 The accused, identified as Nadim (40), a labourer, was handed over to the police. The residents alleged that incidents petty thefts like stealing of bicycles, manhole covers and other household articles were a common thing in the locality. The police recovered some cash, credit cards and keys form the accused. He used a master key to open the lock, said the police. He had earlier whitewashed a house in the locality and conducted a reconnaissance in the area. The incident took place at around 12.30 pm when Krishna Devi, a resident of Sector 32, found the main door of her house opened after returning from a neighbour’s house. “I went inside and was shocked to find a man taking out money and other articles from the cupboard.” He tried to flee when she raised an alarm. Residents of the locality rushed to her house before the thief could manage to escape. On seeing the thief being nabbed, some onlookers also joined in and started thrashing him. The accused sustained bruises and cuts and blood was oozing out of his nose. The police arrested him and registered a case under Section 380 of the IPC. |

Woman booked for duping
Chandigarh, August 21 Amrit Kaur Gill of Sector 9 alleged that Shilpa Aggarwal of Sector 37 had taken Rs 7.43 lakh from her to send her abroad. However, neither she sent her abroad nor she returned the money, she alleged. The police said the accused had already taken an anticipatory bail. |

Kingpin of car thieves’ gang nabbed
Chandigarh, August 21 Identified as 42-year-old Surjit Singh, alias Makhan, a resident of Ferozepur, he was travelling in a stolen vehicle when the police nabbed him. He is said to be involved in the theft of around 150 vehicles. The police said he was driving a Mahindra Pick-up van (MH-17-G-9378) having a fake registration number plate. The police asked him to show the registration certificate, which was also found to be fake. After verification, the police found that the original number of the vehicle was (PB-10-CM-9681) and it was stolen from Hebowal in Ludhiana. A police official said Surjit was arrested earlier by the Panchkula police in 2004 and 2007. The police had recovered around 150 stolen vehicles form his gang. |

Tenants booked for blackmail
Zirakpur, August 21 The accused have been identified as Parshotam Verma, a native of Hissar, now a resident of Regaila Towers, Zirakpur, and Sunil Verma, from Rajasthan. The police said Ram Nath Khurana (67), a resident of Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi, had alleged that he owned a showroom at Ajit Enclave, Zirakpur, which was given on rent to Parshotam Verma, who was running his business of Photo Studio-79. He alleged that on August 17 he had come from Delhi to collect the monthly rent from his tenants, but they offered him a drug-laced soft drink after which he got semi-unconscious. The accused took him to their rented flat in Zirakpur where they again offered him a soft drink and he fell unconscious. On regaining consciousness, he found himself in a semi-nude state. The accused then allegedly started blackmailing him saying that they had clicked his obscene pictures with a woman and would send the pictures to his family members if he did not pay Rs 50 lakh. Khurana immediately gave them three cheques of Rs four lakh, two cheques of Rs one lakh and one of Rs two lakh to the accused, who also withdrew Rs 25,000 from
his debit card later from a local ATM. Zirakpur SHO Sukhwinder Singh said the statement of the victim had been record and a case had been registered. He said during preliminary investigation, the police didn’t find any obscene pictures of the victim. |

Chandigarh, August 21 In quarterfinal matches, Ryan International School blanked Jainender School, Panchkula, by 3-0, Delhi Public School of Pinjore eked out a narrow 1-0 triumph against Banyan Tree School, Sector 48, Chandigarh, St Xavier’s School of Mohali overcame a stiff challenge of St Xavier’s School of Panchkula by 4-3 on penalties after the teams played a goalless draw in the regulated period and Little Flower Convent of Panchkula upset strong contenders St Xavier’s School, Sector 44, Chandigarh, by 2-0. Bhavya and Karan scored one goal each in the 7th and 28th minutes, respectively. Ryan International dominated the proceedings, but they had to wait for their first goal for 15th minute, when their rivals scored a self-goal. Then, Karan and Gagan scored one goal each in the 35th and 36th minutes, respectively, to seal Jainender School’s fate. Delhi Public School, Pinjore, and Banyan Tree School, Chandigarh, played a tough game. Despite being evenly matched, Rishi clinched the all-important goal in the 39th minute. The third quarterfinal outing between St Xavier’s of Panchkula and St Xavier’s of Mohali ended in a goalless draw in the regulation period. In the tie-breaker session, Shubham, Gurbir, Kishmit and Navneet converted their spot kicks for the Mohali School. Hosts Xavier’s converted their penalties through Vivek, Sushil and Ashish. GMSSS-18 clinch hockey title
Chandigarh, August 21 The final match was played between the Coaching Centre, Sector 18, and GMSSS, Sector 18. Manmeet Kaur of GMSSS-18 scored the first field goal of the match in the 52nd minute and Ritusha scored the second goal in the 57th minute. It was a one-sided affair as the match was in favour of GMSSS-18 by 2-0. The GMSSS-18 availed seven penalty corners against nil by the Coaching Centre-18. Director sports Chandigarh, ML Sharma was the chief guest. The prizes were given by DPI colleges and former president of Chandigarh Women Hockey Association K Atma Ram (Retd). Both winner and runner-up were awarded the cash prize of Rs 1,100. Coaching Centre-18 goalkeeper Reena was announced the best player of the tournament. |
