NIT issues anti-ragging appeal through 16-page brochure
Jalandhar, July 24 Over 2,000 copies of the brochures have been dispatched to the parents of the senior students, a few days ahead of the new academic session that would begin on July 27. An annexure at the back of the brochure carries a format of an undertaking from students to be countersigned by their parents that they would not indulge in any such act. Such an undertaking, it has been mentioned, is being taken as per the provisions of a Supreme Court verdict. The preface of the brochure carries an appeal which also suggests that an effort is being made to make campus not just ragging-free but also alcohol-free. It also carries a list of helpline numbers which include mobile contact numbers of director, deans, registrar, proctors and wardens. The brochure outlines nine forms of punishment, including suspension from attending classes, expulsion from hostel, rustication from the institution, debar from taking admission elsewhere for a specified period and fine ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 1 lakh. It reads, “When persons committing or abetting the crime of ragging are not identified, the institution should resort to collective punishment.” It also cites a list of do’s and don’ts which included taking out processions and demonstrations, gheraoing of faculty, defacing building, use of mobile phones in academic area, use of phones with camera, making obscene gestures and keeping any vehicle in hostel (not even a two-wheeler). The move is being perceived to be a repercussion of an incident of alleged ragging on the campus about four years back that led to the death of a first-year boy. Director Dr Moin Uddin said the initiative was part of the campaign aimed at involving even parents in propagating the bad side of ragging to the wards. |
