Jawan killed in grenade explosion
Tibri (Gurdaspur), July 18 Police sources said Jashandeep Singh, a jawan of the 22 Sikh Regiment, died on the spot after he suffered serious injuries on his stomach due to the explosion of the grenade. Major Rajat Sood, Lieut Narinder Kumar and Havaldar Jaspal Singh suffered multiple injuries. The sources said Jashandeep Singh died as his liver got injured and lost a lot of blood before he could be given the required medical aid. The three other injured had been admitted to the local military hospital. The sources said Jashandeep Singh had been demonstrating the use of grenade in warfare to other jawans. When he took out the pin of one of the hand grenades to throw the same at a safe distance, it slipped out of his hand and exploded within no time at the same place. The sources said the body of Jashandeep Singh was brought to the Civil Hospital, Gurdaspur, for post-mortem examination and was taken back to the cantonment immediately after it was done. The Army officials present in the Civil Hospital refused to talk about the incident to mediapersons. ASI Gurmit Singh was deputed to carry out investigation in the case. When contacted, he said a case under section 174 of the CrPC had been registered at Purana Shala police station. |

Pathankot, July 18 According to the police, Ajish Kumar (33) of Narot Mehra and Brij Bhushan of Anandpura Rara were on their way from Jandwal to Pathankot last night when their motorcycle (PB-35-G-6073) crashed against the barricade, following which both fell on the road. In the meantime, a speeding truck ran over the youths, resulting in the death of one of them on the spot and causing serious injuries to the other. Meanwhile, residents of Mamun and surrounding areas rushed to the spot, damaged the barricade and staged a dharna, blocking traffic for about an hour. The Pathankot police reached the spot and dispersed the mob with a light lathi charge. The villagers raised slogans against the Punjab Transport Department and demanded immediate removal of the barricade. The police registered two cases — one against two officials, Balwinder Singh and Kesar Singh, of the District Transport Office, Gurdaspur, under sections 304-A, 337, 338, 279, 201 and 437 of the IPC and another against five residents of Mamun village, identified as Kewal Krishan, Rakesh Kumar, Vijay Dogra, Deepak Sharma and Rakesh Sharma, for causing damage to government property. |

Batala, July 18 Dr Naresh Kumar Arora, SSP, said Charan Singh, resident of Kahlwan village, had complained to the DIG, Border Range, Amritsar, that on May 17 his son Harpreet Singh and his sister-in law’s grandson Ranjodh Singh, resident of Dhardeo village, under
the Mehta police station, went to Qadian, where they quarrelled with Suneha Arif, wife of Mohammad Mujjafar, resident of
Hyderabad. They also took away her purse. Charan Singh said when this came to his notice, he went to Suneha Arif with the boys, where they apologised from her and the matter
was resolved. But, when the matter came to the notice of the SHO, Qadian, Sub-Inspector Sawinder Singh, he asked Charan Singh to give him Rs 1 lakh or he would register robbery cases against the boys. But the matter was settled at Rs 50,000. After enquiring the matter, a case was registered against Sub-Inspector Sawinder Singh. Balraj Singh Sidhu, DSP, Qadian, has been directed to do further investigation and arrest the accused official. The SHO has been suspended and
a departmental inquiry initiated against him. |

5 booked for demanding dowry
Tarn Taran, July 18 District police sources said here today that the case was registered on the statement of Kulwinder Kaur, daughter of Balwinder Singh, a resident of Patti. Kulwinder was married to Baljinder Singh about six and a half years ago. The victim alleged that Baljinder Singh and his family started harassing her mentally and physically soon after the marriage. The district police conducted investigation in the matter and booked five members of Kulwinder Kaur’s in-laws’ family. Besides Baljinder, the husband of the victim, the other accused have been identified as Gurcharan Singh, father-in-law, Kawaljit Kaur, mother-in-law, Manider Singh and Parminder Kaur, brother-in-law and his wife. |

Kapurthala, July 18 The victim’s mother submitted a complaint to SSP Ram Singh. The rape was confirmed in the medical examination of the girl conducted at the local Civil Hospital. Subsequently, an FIR, under section 302 of the IPC, has been registered against Jitender Singh
and he has been arrested. |
