Malik’s ton puts Pak on top
Vital 366-run lead for visitors
Colombo, July 22 Pakistan, resuming on 16 for one, slowly consolidated their initiative with a hard- working batting display on a slow-scoring day, finishing on 300 for five at the close. Malik completed his first test century since March 2006 and only the second of his career just before the close and finished unbeaten with wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal. The 27-year-old right-hander faced 186 balls and hit 12 boundaries. Misbah ul Haq contributed with a watchful 65 from 149 balls, sharing a crucial 119- run stand for fifth wicket that sapped Sri Lanka’s bowlers during long hot afternoon. The tourists showed their determination to avoid the humiliation of a series whitewash as they chiselled out 70 runs in the morning and 82 in the afternoon before accelerating in the final session. Earlier, Pakistan were soon in trouble when Fawad Alam, Younus Khan and Mohammad Yousuf were all removed in the morning session. Left-arm paceman Thilan Thushara made the first breakthrough when he caught Alam off his own bowling with a short delivery to reduce Pakistan to 22-2. Nuwan Kulasekara then trapped Younus lbw after replacing Thushara in the attack, although TV replays indicated the Pakistan skipper had edged the ball onto his pads. Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath was finally rewarded for his hard work when he had Yousuf caught behind. Shoaib sidelined, Asif recalled
Karachi, July 22 The interim selection committee headed by former Test captain Wasim Bari also announced the squad for the ODI series in Sri Lanka and Shoaib Akhtar did not feature there as
well. The committee, which includes captain Younis Khan, vice-captain Misbah-ul-Haq and coach Intikhab Alam, sprang a surprise by naming Asif for the Trophy. Asif is serving a 12-month ban for failing a dope test in last year’s IPL and the suspension ends on the day the Champions Trophy starts.

Can anybody upstage Phelps in Rome?
Rome, July 22 Phelps is expected to again dominate headlines at the swimming competition of the 13th FINA World Swimming Championships, which are taking place in Rome from July 17-August 2, but he could face tough opposition. Surprisingly, the 24-year-old Baltimore swimmer could be upstaged by swimsuits. Heading into the Olympics last year, the Speedo LZR Racer was the swimsuit that everybody was talking about and the suit, which incorporated polyurethane panels, was credited with playing a major part in the flood of world records in the run-up to Beijing and the Olympics themselves. This time around, however, Speedo seems to be lagging behind its competitors. The Nottingham-based company seems to have lost the edge as its competitors developed swimsuits made entirely out of polyurethane. These were duly banned by the sports' governing body FINA and as Speedo obviously thought that an appeal against the decision would stand no chance, they did not develop their own all-polyurethane swimsuit. Thus, by the time the FINA ban was overturned, they had not developed the LZR Racer further and swimmers wearing rival swimsuits have managed to swim into the limelight with world records. And although Speedo now has a new suit to rival that of their competitors, it can only be approved after the worlds.

Baljit’s comeback will be my redemption, says coach
New Delhi, July 22 “I can never forget the pain Baljit suffered. Somehow I feel myself responsible for it. I am continuously praying for him. It will be the happiest day of my life when he makes a comeback to the field,” a penitent James said. James was giving some practice to Baljit, Adrian D’Souza, Bharat Chetri and PR Sreejesh on that fateful day when a golf ball, used to improve the goalkeepers’ reflex, sneaked through Baljit’s visor and hit his eye. “That was the most horrible day of my life. I was practising with four goalkeepers. We were
playing a game and Adrian had won first game while Balli was winning the second. We thought that he is celebrating his victory as we were some 10 yards away from him. Later we got to know that his eye was severely injured,” he said. “It took 40 minutes to reach the hospital and he was continuously telling me ‘I am ok coach saab, tussi fikar na karo (you don’t worry)’. He himself called his father and told him about the accident,” James recalled. Even though former players criticised the use of golf ball in practice, James said they have been doing it for quite a while without any accident. “We have been using golf ball for the last two years. We have specially designed helmets for that,” he said. Baljit apparently did not wear that special helmet during the practice and James disclosed that there was only one such headgear for four goalkeepers. “Initially this camp was to be held in Bhopal but plans were changed after new coach’s arrival and it shifted here. In this process, three helmets were left in Bhopal and we had only one with us,” he said. Baljit's injury not only ruled him out of India’s Europe tour but also cast a shadow on his entire career with doctors refusing to promise full vision for the custodian. James has seen Jugraj Singh and Sandeep Singh recover from accident to return to the field and he expects Baljit too to make a successful comeback. “Sandeep and Jugraj made a comeback after worst accidents. Baljit has the will power to make it possible and I am sure he will be back,” said James, who has played more than 100 international matches for India.

Blow to England as KP ruled out of Ashes
London, July 22 The 29-year-old right-hander, England’s leading batsman with a test average of 49.96, was hampered by the injury during the second match of the series which finished on Monday. “Following a consultation, involving scans and testing, with the world’s leading Achilles specialist Kevin Pietersen today underwent surgery on his right Achilles tendon,” ECB chief medical officer Nick Peirce said in a statement. “Kevin will look to undertake a comprehensive rehabilitation programme to ensure there is no risk of recurrence. This is expected to be approximately six weeks.” Pietersen said he was very disappointed to miss the last three tests of the series, which England lead 1-0. “As an England cricketer the Ashes are the pinnacle of the game so I'm absolutely devastated to be missing the rest of this series,” Pietersen said. “Up until now the Achilles injury has been manageable but it recently reached the point where we needed to look at other options in terms of treatment. I hate missing matches for England and especially during an Ashes summer but now that the decision has been made to undergo surgery I'm confident I can return to the England team injury-free following a course of rehabilitation.” — AFP |
Row over MAKA Trophy
Amritsar, July 22 The committee was constituted by Association of Indian Universities (AIU) to investigate into the manipulation of entries in Yachting competition organized by the Punjabi University at Pong Dam, Himachal Pradesh in 2007. It was also decided that the MAKA Trophy should not be awarded to the Vice-Chancellor or Director (Sports) as they appear prime facie to be involved in the manipulation relating to the aforesaid Yachting competition. Instead the trophy should be awarded to the students’ representatives either the available captains of any two winning teams or elected student’s representatives or one best sportsman and one best sportswoman. After going through the investigations it also pointed out that the matter of manipulation of the entries was of serious nature required detailed investigations and hence, the AIU would constitute a committee with a government nominee to probe the matter and to take appropriate action against the erring officials, it added. According to report (copy of which is with The Tribune) the committee unanimously decided that the tournament organized by the university should be treated invalid. |
