The Ashes
London, July 20 The capacity crowd at the historic Lord’s erupted into frenzied celebrations when spinner Graeme Swann took the last wicket off Mitchell Johnson to give the hosts a memorable triumph which will be remembered for Andrew Flintoff’s fiery five for 92. It was a remarkable comeback from England who just about managed to save the first Test in Cardiff with the last wicket pair of James Anderson and Monty Panesar playing out 69 balls to ensure a nail-biting draw. The burly Flintoff, who is on his swansong series, turned out to be the wrecker-in-chief with an outstanding exbition of seam bowling and was fittingly given the honour to lead his teammates into the dressing room after the victory. Resuming at their overnight score of 313 for five, the Aussies never really looked like saving the match after Haddin was dismissed by Flintoff without adding to his overnight tally. The dismissal of Clarke, who held the innings together with a composed effort, was the final nail in the Australian coffin and it was only a matter of time before the hosts had their moment of glory. Clarke had himself to blame for his wicket as he lost his concentration and stepped out to Swann only to see the ball turn in and knock down his stumps. His 224-minute vigil at the crease contained 14 boundaries. The remaining Aussie batsmen could not hang around for long though Johnson did unleash some lusty shots in the dying moments to narrow down the margin of the defeat. Australian captain Ricky Ponting admitted that his side was outplayed by the hosts in all departments of the game but promised to regroup as a team and come hard in the remaining three matches. — PTI Scoreboard

Colombo, July 20 However, three wickets fell for just two runs in the final 15 minutes of the evening session as Sri Lanka hitback. Left-arm paceman Thilan Thushara was the pick of the bowlers, dismissing Fawad Alam and Younus Khan in the morning and then sparking the late collapse by trapping Shoaib Malik leg before for 45. Sri Lanka, 2-0 up in the series, had Pakistan in early trouble as the ball swung and seamed in overcast conditions in the morning. But Yousuf and Manzoor steadied the innings as batting became easier in the afternoon as cloud cover was replaced by bright sunshine and Sri Lanka's bowlers were forced to toil hard.Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara even turned to the part-time medium pace of former captain Mahela Jayawardene in bid to conjure-up a breakthrough. It was Chaminda Vaas, who was included for his farewell test match in place of spinner Ajantha Mendis, who made the breakthrough, finding the outside edge of Manzoor and Jayawardene took the catch at slip. — Reuters Scoreboard |
Bangladesh Tour of WI St. George’s, Grenada, July 20 It only took Bangladesh 25 minutes to complete the demolition of the West Indies batting with Dave Bernard Jr finishing with the top score of 69 for the hosts. The Tigers could not prevent the home team from taking their lead past the 200-run mark though, when Bernard drove a full toss from Shakib back past the bowler for a single. Shakib Al Hasan finished with five wickets for 70 runs, and Enamul Haque Jr ended with three for 48 from 17 overs. Steady overnight and morning rain had threatened to scuttle Bangladesh’s effort, after the start was delayed by two hours and 10 minutes. Next over, Enamul watched Bernard languidly hit his second six, a lofted drive over long-off, but the left-arm spinner got his revenge two balls later, when he had him stumped moving down to repeat the stroke. Lanky all-rounder Bernard also struck six fours from 76 balls he faced in a shade under two hours. Bangladesh lead the two-Test series 1-0. The Tigers need only to draw the match to clinch their first-ever Test series victory overseas. Meanwhile, the injured Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza has been ruled out of the one-day series against West Indies starting later this month, the Bangladesh Cricket Board said on Monday. Mortaza fell awkwardly while bowling on the third day of the first test at St Vincent earlier this month, limped off the field without completing the over and did not bowl further in the match. Bangladesh and West Indies will play three one-day international matches and a Twenty20 International after the test series. — Agencies Scoreboard Bangladesh (2nd Innings) |

Bhullar sets eyes on Asian Tour event
Gaganjeet Bhullar of Kapurthala heads a strong Indian challenge as the Asian Tour’s second half of the season resumes this week with the $4 lakh Indonesia President Invitational at Jakarta on Thursday. Fresh from his grand opening round show at the British Open just two days back, the 21-year-old Punjab golfer is all set to improve on his showing in the inaugural Jakarta event in 2007 when he was pipped to the title by one shot with Filipino Juvic Pagunsan producing a stunning birdie-eagle finish to triumph. This year Gagaganjeet has shown his promise as a rising star by notching three straight top-10s on the Asian Tour. He was joint 10th at the Singha Thailand Open, tied second in the SAIL Open in India and shared fifth place at the Black Mountain Masters in Thailand. He missed the cut in the third world Major, but his fighting qualities were amply demonstrated on the opening day of the British Open, when he came back with a hat-trick of birdies in the front and back nine after bogeying in the earlier holes. Bhullar will rub shoulders with the likes of Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant, Chinese Taipei’s Lu Wen-teh, Singapore’s Lam Chih Bing, Filipino Angelo Que, South Africa’s James Kamte, Korea’s Noh Seung-yul and Bae Sang-moon. |
Gill assures top treatment for goalie Baljit
New Delhi, July 20 Baljit was hit on the right eye by a golf ball during practice session with coach Romeo James at the Indian team’s coaching camp in Pune on Friday. He was rushed to Delhi and underwent an emergency operation at the prestigious eye institute of the AIIMS. Dr Gill visited the ace goalkeeper at the hospital today morning, and interacted with the doctors and his father. The Minister assured Baljit’s father that the player would be given the best medical treatment. Dr Gill said he had been told by the team of doctors attending on Baljit that the player needed to be in the hospital for another six to seven days for proper monitoring of his recovery, and what all steps needed to be taken to give him the best medical care. “I have full faith in the doctors of the Rajendra Prasad eye institute and the world class facilities available there as the Prime Minister and I myself were treated at the hospital”, Dr Gill told The Tribune. “If necessary, I will send him to London for treatment”, Dr Gill added. “I will do everything for his rehabilitation", said the Minister. |
