Bangladesh Tour Of WI
St George’s (Grenada), July 21 Shakib hit the winning runs in style with a six to seal a first ever series win away from home - admittedly against a weakened and inexperienced West Indies side after the senior players boycotted the series over a pay dispute - and the first time they have won two successive Tests. Shakib scored 96 not out and Raqibul Hasan made 65 - both career bests - to set things up for the Tigers, as they successfully chased 215 for victory to win by four wickets and claim only their second ever series win. “In our nine years, this is the biggest thing that has happened to Bangladesh cricket,” said Shakib, who also hit 13 fours in 96 from 97 balls to make him a shoe-in for the Man-of-the-Match award. “This series victory will give a boost to our confidence, and will help to take us to the next level, and with God’s help, we shall go forward. There was not too much pressure on us, since the boys have been playing really, really well. It was a good victory,” he said. Bangladesh were wobbling on 67 for four about half-hour before the tea break, but Shakib joined Raqibul and they put Bangladesh solidly on course for victory with a stand of 106 for the fifth wicket either side of tea. Raqibul reached his 50 from 74 balls, when he steered Dave Bernard Jr to third man for his seventh fourth. About 25 minutes later, Shakib arrived at his landmark, when he drove Kemar Roach for his seventh boundary and the first of three in succession in the fast bowler’s 11th over. But Raqibul became the fourth of five wickets for 55 runs in 16 overs for Darren Sammy, when he gave an easy return catch with Bangladesh still needing 44. He batted for a shade under three hours, faced 99 balls, and struck eight fours and one six. WI declare ODI squad
West Indies have added a couple of new faces and recalled a few others in a 14-member squad for the first two One-day Internationals against Bangladesh this coming Sunday and next Tuesday in Dominica. The batting has been boosted by the return of left-hander Devon Smith and fellow Grenadian Andre Fletcher, and the inclusion of uncapped left-hander Kieran Powell - all three are opening batsmen. The bowling too, has been fortified with leg-spinner Rawl Lewis being recalled and uncapped fast-medium bowler Gavin Tonge being added. Making room from the Test squad which was swept 0-2 by the Tigers are Ryan Austin, Tino Best, Ryan Hinds, Kevin McClean, and Omar Phillips. — AFP Scoreboard Bangladesh (1st Innings) 232 West Indies (2nd Innings) overnight (192 for 8) Richards lbw b Shakib 12 Phillips c Ashraful b Al Hasan 29 Dowlin lbw b Haque 49 Hinds c Mahmudullah b Al Hasan 2 Reifer lbw b Mahmudullah 3 Bernard st Rahim b Haque 69 Sammy c Hasan b Al Hasan 22 Walton c Mahmudullah b Al Hasan 1 Austin c Iqbal b S Hossain 3 Best c Rahim b Al Hasan 12 Roach not out 1 Extras (lb-2 nb-4) 6 Total: (all out; 70.5 overs) 209 Fall of

Pakistan Tour of Lanka
Colombo, July 21
The tourists lost opener Khurram Manzoor in the final over before stumps, bowled by left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, and finished on 16 for one, a lead of 82 runs. Fawad Alam was on 14 and Younus Khan on nought. Former captain Mahela Jayawardene top-scored for the hosts with a skilful 79 from 153 deliveries including 10 boundaries. Tillakaratne Dilshan also scored a gutsy 44 batting with a fractured right index finger and Kumar Sangakkara made a fluent 45. Sri Lanka, 2-0 up in the series, needed just 3.4 overs in the morning to end the Pakistan innings after the visitors had resumed on 289 for seven. Left-arm paceman Thilan Thushara grabbed two of the last three wickets to fall, claiming career-best figures of five for 83. Thushara wrapped up the innings as Pakistan’s batting collapsed for the fourth time in the series, the last six wickets tumbling for 14 runs after the second new ball was taken. The Pakistan bowlers led the fightback after Umar Gul bowled Malinda Warnapura with the first ball of the innings and Khan bowled opener Tharanga Paranavitana for five to reduce Sri Lanka to 23 for two. Sri Lanka would have been in deeper trouble had Manzoor not dropped Sangakkara on 16, spilling an easy catch at gully after the skipper played Mohammad Aamer away from his body. — Reuters Scoreboard Manzoor c Jayawardene b Vaas 93 Alam c Dilshan b Thushara 16 Khan b Thushara 2 Yousuf run out 90 Misbah c Dilshan b Kulasekara 27 Malik lbw b Thushara 45 Akmal b Thushara 1 Gul b Kulasekara 2 Kaneria lbw b Kulasekara 1 Aamer not out 2 Ajmal b Thushara 8 Extras: (b-10 nb-2) 12 Total (all out, 89.4 overs) 299 Fall of wickets: 1-34 2-36 3-203 4-210 5-285 6-285 7-287, 8-289 9-289 10-299. Ronaldo will come back one day, hopes Ferguson
London, July 21 “He may come back, you never know. Sometimes it happens that way. He loved United. If you look back at the six years he had with us, he never missed training,” Ferguson was quoted as saying by The Mirror. “That’s one of the things he has above all other players - he was never injured, he always played. And his best is yet to come. He’s only 24. He came to the right club at the right part of his career. He could have gone to Real Madrid, Barcelona or other clubs. But he came to the right one and appreciates that. It was always his intention to make his move,” he added. Ferguson admitted that Ronaldo’s absence is a huge loss and it would be challenge for the team to overcome it. “He’s the best player in this world by absolutely miles, streets ahead of Lionel Messi, and Kaka.” —

Force India not one-hit wonder, says Mallya
New Delhi, July 21 Force India driver Adrian Sutil pulled off a surprise by qualifying seventh for the German Grand Prix and was running as high as third before he came in contact with Kimi Raikkonen that ended his fairytale race. Despite missing the team’s maiden Formula One points, it was a brilliant show by both the Force India drivers and Mallya said the team has improved a lot since the start of the season and its finally showing. “I am confident that Germany was not just a one-hit wonder for us. We always said the first few races would be compromised by the late signing of the McLaren and Mercedes deal but since then we’ve been introducing new upgrades and each one has been a step forward,” Mallya said. — PTI |
Baljit will bounce back stronger: Rajpal
Mumbai, July 21 Speaking to The Tribune the dribble king Rajpal Singh says the entire team’s heart goes out to what has happened to Baljit. “He is a terrific character both on and off the field. I am sure he will find a way to bounce back even stronger from this. The entire team is shaken up but we all pray to God that he recovers soon and when we return he is seeing the ball bigger than before.” Speaking on the upcoming tour Rajpal says the team is expecting to get an account of the camp they have had at Pune, the first under Jose Brasa. “We can feel that this has to be good for our game with everyone getting to play all over the field. This is a more fluid way of play and the amount of movement will enable us to counter the European styleof hockey.” On being asked whether the emphasis on attack, with the new style, will create a defensive problem, Rajpal disagress. “The Europeans play the same style of hockey but it has never looked like a problem. Moreover, this system will ensure that gaps are filled, and not created as the players will be spreading around better on the turf.” And does he find the ‘Jose Brasa Way’ the messiah Indian hockey was looking for? “Till the words and plans don’t get tested on field it is hard to say anything, but the team has felt that it is great for us with more emphasis laid on physical fitness. The training team has been doing a great job for us and that obviously will translate into a more energetic performance on the field. Rest we are always positive and hope for the best.”
