Power cuts back, prices up
after poll: Chautala
Karnal, June 9 Talking to mediapersons at Jat Dharamshala here he lashed out at the Congress for its failure on all fronts and said power cuts were back and the prices of essential commodities had shot up after the poll. “The people are feeling the brunt and will not spare the Congress for its betrayal and give a befitting reply to party candidates in the poll,” he added. Setting at rest speculation about the continuation of the INLD-BJP alliance after the drubbing in the Lok Sabha poll, Chautala said the alliance candidates for the Assembly poll would be announced on September 25. He rejected allegations that the BJP cadres did not work for the alliance candidates and asserted that the differences among the BJP cadres were ironed out well before the Lok Sabha poll.Workers of both parties campaigned for the INLD-BJP candidates. He said the issues raised during the Lok Sabha poll were of the national level but in the Assembly poll state issues would dominate. Non-performance of the government and issues like the failure to ensure a regular supply of electricity , rising prices, corruption and unemployment would come to the fore. |
Medical college for Mewat
Chandigarh, June 9 The National Capital Region Planning Board today granted approval to a medical college and hospital in Mewat at a meeting held in Delhi. With this approval, the state will get nearly 75 per cent of the funding for the project from the board. Confirming the sanction of the board, Principal Secretary, Health, Anuradha Gupta said work on the project would begin as early as July. “We have everything ready and are hoping to hasten the process of allotting tenders so that the work can begin quickly. Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda took personal interest in the matter and pushed the project at the Centre,” she said. The medical college and hospital will come up in Nalhera village in Mewat where the gram panchayat has given 94 acres free of cost to the government. Comprising two phases, the first phase, entailing an expenditure of nearly Rs 320 crore, will see the coming up of the college as well as a 300-bedded hospital with the latest technology. In the second phase, the government plans to add a dental and nursing college to the project. This is the first big medical project in southern Haryana, which has lagged behind on all fronts right from education to healthcare to infrastructure development. This tertiary-level hospital is also aimed at taking the burden off Delhi while addressing the need for quality healthcare for Mewat on the people’s doorstep. Meanwhile, work on the medical college in Sonepat’s Khanpur Kalan is in full steam. A Rs 300 crore project of a medical college for girls, already approved by the government, is already under way. |
Murder case: Main accused held
Fatehabad, June 9 The police had recovered the burnt body of a youth on the Ratia-Sardoolgarh road and his motorcycle, also badly burnt, was lying on the victim in such a manner that one could easily take it to be a case of accident. SP C. Sambasiva Rao said: “Circumstantial evidence like no traces of an accident led us to suspect that it could be a case of murder. Presence of traces of a burnt gunny bag also indicated that the body had been brought there before being burnt.” Later, the body was identified as Surender of Lali village on the basis of a portion of unburnt jeans and rings worn by him. Some villagers informed the police that Surinder was seen in the company of a fellow villager, Dharam Pal, in the evening, before the day his body was recovered. When the police rounded him up and interrogated him, Dharam Pal allegedly revealed that he had killed the victim with the help of Mange Ram and Kala Ram as he found Surinder an obstacle in his illicit relations with the victim’s wife. The victim was killed with an axe and later his body was burnt with his motorcycle by pouring petrol. The police had arrested Dharam Pal and was raiding possible hideouts of two others, the SP added. |

19 bodies recovered from canals in 5 months
Sirsa, June 9 Among the various tasks the police has to handle in this district is an onerous duty accepting bodies coming from far-off places like Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Sirhind in Punjab and Tohana, Fatehabad and other towns of Haryana. As many as 14 canals and minors enter Sirsa from various corners of the district and 12 of these culminate in this district itself. The Bhakra Main branch, the Sukhchain minor, the Baruwali minor, the Sirsa Main minor, the Fatehabad Main branch, the Pilimandori minor, the Gigorani minor, three minors from the Rajasthan canal, the Mamar Khera minor and the Rori branch enter this district from various points and their tail end is also in this district, while the Rajasthan canal that enters the district from Lohgarh village leaves from Bharukhera to enter Rajasthan. The Rangoi nullah, a rainy season drain that enters the district from Narel Khera, merges in the Ghaggar in Nirvan village. Whereas all these canals and channels bring with them wealth and prosperity for local farmers in theform of irrigation water, these also bring with them bodies of several unidentified victims every month. Among the victims are those who have committed suicide or those who have become victims of malevolent forces or sometimes those who had accidentally fallen into the canal waters. ‘Verdict must not be delayed’
Chandigarh, June 9 Justice Ranjit Singh has ruled: “Delay in delivery of a judgment gives rise to an apprehension in the mind of a party that the arguments raised at the Bar may not have received proper attention while disposing of the case after so much of delay”. The ruling came on a petition filed by Ram Kanwar and another petitioner against a Sonepat assistant collector and other respondents in a landlord-tenancy dispute. Justice Ranjit Singh ruled: This case is not a happy reflection on the functioning of quasi-judicial authorities. The Financial Commissioner heard the arguments in this case on August 21, 2002, and reserved the order. The judgment was ultimately pronounced on June 28, 2007. Can such a judgment be sustained in the eyes of law is the question posed by the petitioners through the present writ petition” “The petitioners, as per the respondent-landlord, are neither paying rent nor are vacating the land, whereas they have an order staying dispossession in their favour since August 16, 2007. Counsel for landlord, thus, would urge, with some justification that they suffered because of delay in delivery of the judgment and not the petitioners, who rather stand benefited by delay in delivering the judgment. “He would, thus, beseech this court not to interfere in the impugned order whereby the order evicting the tenants has already been made. Justice Ranjit Singh asserted: “The order impugned obviously suffers from infirmity, as noticed by the Supreme Court, and adopting the same course, though with reluctance, I would set-aside the impugned order and remand the case back to the present Financial Commissioner to decide the same with some urgency”. |
DLF Colonies
Gurgaon, June 9 Additional infrastructure, including 111.9 km-long high-tension lines, 16.28 km-long low-tension lines and distribution transformers of a capacity of 98.453 kVA costing around Rs 20 crore, is required in the DLF colonies. The survey has pointed out that inadequate infrastructure provided by a number of builders is one of the main reasons behind unscheduled power cuts in some areas of the city. The issue has been discussed by various agencies, including the HVPN, the DHBVN, the Town and Country Planning Department and builders. They have been asked to augment the infrastructure for power distribution. The DHBVN has been asked to get the infrastructure augmented. DLF had planned and agreed to set 66 kV substations at three locations, but only one substation has so far been set up at Q Block. Other developers like Unitech, APL, Ambience Infrastructure, Sheetal International and Vipul Infrastructure had also agreed to set up 66 kV substations, but are yet to do so. |
Withdrawal of Exemption from NET
Panipat, June 9 The union held a meeting at Students’ Home on the campus of Kurukshetra University yesterday during which it was decided to oppose the proposed move of the university. The meeting of the executive council is scheduled for June 12. Dr Vikram Kharb, president of the union, said they had already submitted a memorandum to the Vice Chancellor of Kurukshetra University and in case the council still went ahead with the withdrawal of exemption from NET, the union would go on a relay fast outside the VC’s office on the university campus. He said it was quite unbecoming of the university authorities to come up with such an agenda at a time when the UGC was all set to introduce the third amendment to the guidelines regarding eligibility of candidates for posts of lecturer in colleges and universities. As per the third amendment, the UGC is likely to exempt PhD holders from qualifying NET, while MPhil holders would still have to clear NET to become eligible for posts of lecturer. The union said the university should not take up such an agenda and instead go with the UGC recommendations. |
