US: N-deal with India not on back-burner

Washington, June 6
A key aide to US President Barack Obama has dismissed reports that the new US administration has kept the nuclear deal with India on the back-burner.

Bruce Riedel, a former CIA official who co-chaired an inter-agency committee which formulated Obama’s Af-Pak policy, also did not see Robert Einhorn’s recent appointment as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s special adviser on non-proliferation issues as an impediment in implementation of the nuclear deal, signed during the Bush era.

“Senator Obama voted for the US-India civil nuclear deal last fall and he has made clear that he wants to see it implemented. At the same time, President Obama has also made it clear that arms control and non-proliferation are back on the American agenda,” Riedel said in an interview.

On the appointment of Einhorn, which has caused a flutter in India because of his strong views against the Indo-US nuclear deal, Riedel said: “Einhorn is a very qualified American diplomat and an expert on nuclear issues.”

“I think, you would see, early on in this administration the attempt to get the United States Senate to ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) and I think you would see in time that the United States would once again be urging all countries around the world to sign onto the CTBT,” he said.

Advocating the need for India and Pakistan to sign the CTBT, Riedel said it was now time to support an international ban on all nuclear testing.

“I favour both India and Pakistan, signing onto the CTBT. India and Pakistan do not need to test their nuclear weapons. They have done that already. It is now time to support an international ban on all nuclear testing,” he said. — PTI

Pak CJ calls on Zardari
Afzal Khan writes from Islamabad

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had a one-on-one meeting on Friday at the presidency though no word was available about what transpired in the meeting.

The two never came face-to-face ever since the restoration of the Chief Justice because of the latter’s reluctance but President Zardari turned the opportunity of a handshake into an historic meeting.

The meeting lasted more than 20 minutes, but a terse press statement following the historic contact only said: “Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry called on President Asif Ali Zardari here on Friday at the Presidency. The meeting was held before the oath-taking ceremony of Justice Agha Rafiq Ahmed Khan as Chief Justice Federal Shariat Court”.

According to sources, the two discussed the new judicial policy. After the restoration of judiciary in March this year, the Chief Justice twice avoided to go to the presidency; once when President Zardari hosted a dinner for the outgoing Chief Justice (retd) Abdul Hameed Dogar, and again on March 23.

Sharif to contest by-election

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is one of the six candidates to contest in the by-election to National Assembly seat NA-123 in Lahore that will be held on June 30.

The by-election on the vacant seat was due to be held in June last year but had been delayed by court battles challenging the eligibility of Nawaz Sharif to seek any elective public office. The Supreme Court last month ruled that Sharif did not suffer from any eligibility impediment.

The Election Commission of Pakistan said nomination papers filed last year would be considered valid and no new papers be entertained. Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz hopes that the other five candidates will withdraw their papers facilitating an uncontested election from his traditional constituency.

‘Flight 447 autopilot not on before crash’

Paris, June 6
Signals sent by Air France Flight 447 before it disappeared show its autopilot was not on, the head of the French agency leading the investigation into the crash of 447 said today.

Agency head Paul-Louis Arslanian said it was not clear if the autopilot had been switched off by the pilots or had stopped working because it received conflicting airspeed readings. Plane manufacturer Airbus says the investigation found the flight received inconsistent readings from different instruments as it struggled in a massive thunderstorm.

Alain Bouillard, head of the investigation into the crash, told reporters that, “we also saw messages that show the automatic pilot wasn’t working.” Arslanian said investigators are analysing 24 messages sent automatically by the plane during the last minutes of the flight. He said investigators are searching a zone of several hundred sq km for the debris. — AP

Brazil finds bodies from jet crash

Reclife (Brazil), June 6
Brazil’s air force today recovered bodies from an Air France jetliner that came down over the Atlantic on June 1 with 228 people on board, a spokesman said.

“We confirm the recovery from the water debris and bodies from the Air France plane,” Colonel Jorge Amaral told reporters in the northeastern city of Recife.

“We can’t give more information without confirming what we have,” he said.

For days an international fleet of aircraft and ships have been searching the open Atlantic in the hope of finding any clues of how Air France flight 447 vanished on route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.

Earlier finds had turned out not to be part of the crash, as searchers battled days of terrible weather conditions -- with rain limiting the visibility and waves of up to 1.8 meters. — APA
