Fresh crisis threatens Nepal government
MPRF Parliamentary Party withdraws support to protest against Gachchhadar appointment as Deputy Prime Minister
Bishnu Budhathoki writes from Kathmandu

Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal’s decision to appoint Madhesi People’s Rights Forum (MPRF) Parliamentary Party leader Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar as deputy prime minister has pushed both the two-week-old coalition as well as the MPRF into the verge of crisis.

Just a day after the Prime Minister Nepal administered the oath of office and secrecy to Gachchhadar as Deputy Prime Minister, MPRF establishment led by Chairman Upendra Yadav on Friday announced that the party has decided to expel Gachchhadar and six senior leaders from the party on charge of acting against the party decision and anti-Madhes activities and withdraw its support to the CPN-UML-led coalition.

Organising a press meet that was packed with the supporters of Yadav and Co-Chairman, Jaya P Gupta said the party took the decision as the Prime Minister Nepal, including Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala and two other Madhes-based parties-Terai Madhes Democratic Party and Sadbhavana Party — tried to split the MPRF by inducting Gachchhadar in the government.

Even after receiving letter from Yadav not to induct Gachchhadar in the cabinet since the party had not formally named its members in the government, Prime Minister Nepal on Thursday had appointed Gachchhadr as deputy prime minister from the MPRF.

“The MPRF will stay in the opposition in the Constituent Assembly and Legislature-Parliament and intensify protests against the unconstitutional move of the Prime Minister Nepal in and outside Parliament to safeguard the rights of Madhesi people,” he said. He also announced one-day general strike in all 22 districts in Tarai on Monday.

He also claimed that at least 28 party members in the Assembly of total 53 have signed in favour of party establishment and asked all party members.

“This is a correct start,” head of political office of the major opposition Muslim Brotherhood, Issam al-Iryan, said referring to Obama’s criticism of Israel’s settlement activities in the West Bank. “The most important step would be implementation of this vision. Muslims cannot turn a new leaf with US unless there is a just and comprehensive solution for the Palestinian issue,” he said. — PTI

Gilani calls for resumption of Indo-Pak dialogue
Ducks vital issue of Saeed’s release
Afzal Khan writes from Islamabad

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has called for early resumption of bilateral dialogue with India and said the breakdown of peace process works only to the advantage of terrorists.

In a police speech at the National Defence University, Gilani said his government remains committed to have friendly, cooperative and good neighbourly relations with India. He hope the Indian leadership would "sooner or later" realise that only the extremists gain from a stalemate in bilateral dialogue between the two countries.

He did not refer to the latest twist in earlier signs of a thaw in relations in the wake of release of JuD chief Hafiz Saeed to which India has reacted very strongly reacted. Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad last evening called on Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir to convey India strong protest on the release. Bashir said Pakistan had taken concrete steps against those suspected of involvement in Mumbai attacks, but it needed information from India to carry forward the judicial process. He, however, assured the India envoy that Punjab government is going for an appeal against Saeed's release.

Another Indian student assaulted in Oz

Melbourne, June 5
Notwithstanding assurances by the Australian government that it would not tolerate racial violence, another Indian student was beaten up by a group of youths here today, the 10th person from the community to be assaulted within a space of a month.

Amrit Pal Singh (20) from Haryana, who is pursuing a course in community welfare from the Caps Institute of Management here, was assaulted near a McDonald’s outlet when he was walking to the place where he worked on the part-time basis.

“One of the guys came to me and took off my mobile. When I asked him to please give me my mobile back, he gave me a punch on my face. I also gave a punch to him. Following which, his four friends came and started beating me,” Singh said, adding “I have told the police about the incident.” “One of the attackers took out a knife to hit me but I escaped as it hit my bag,” he told PTI.

Singh was the 10th Indian student to be attacked within a month. One of the victims, Shravan Kumar, a student from Andhra Pradesh, remained critical after being stabbed with a screwdriver by a group of teenagers in a racial attack that also left his three Indian friends injured here last month.

The latest attack came despite the Australian government, including Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard, pledging to take all steps to prevent such incidents. — PTI

In an open letter published in newspapers here, Purnell noted that Brown's continued leadership made a Conservative victory "more, not less likely". — PTI
