ATM card holder feels cheated

The General Railway Police has registered a case of fraud and theft against unidentified persons who fraudulently withdrew money from the ATM using the card of complainant Dalbir Singh which had been stuck in the machine.

The Special Narcotics Cell (SNC) today seized a huge quantity of poppy husk and arrested three inter-state drug smugglers in this connection. However, one of their accomplices escaped.

Panic grips town over violence rumours

Panic gripped the town at 1 pm and shopkeepers closed their shops following a rumour of violence by some hooligans in the town, especially near the bus stand, during relaxation in curfew today. The people rushed to their homes.

Deputy Commissioner N.K. Wadhawan sent SDM Karnail Singh and other officials to assess the situation. When the officials took a round of the town, they did not find any incident. The police made announcement to reduce panic.

A flag march by the Army, paramilitary and police was staged to boost the moral of the public. After a few hours, shopkeepers resumed their work. Relaxation in curfew from 6 am to 6 pm had been given. Private bus operators plied buses on various routes since morning. Punjab Roadways GM Iqbal Singh Sandhu said buses of Punjab Roadways were started at noon on all routes.

He said the stranded passengers had been sent to their destinations.

SSP Parmod Ban said intensive patrolling by the forces was being done.

Cases registered
Nawanshahr: The police has registered cases against unidentified persons at Nawanshahr city and Rahon police stations under section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act and various sections of the IPC for causing damage to public property at the local municipal council office, bus terminus, child development office, civil dispensary, Rahon, and Khalsa cement and iron store, Usmanpur, etc. on Monday.

Poor Results Teachers of 62 schools face action

Jalandhar, May 28
Teachers of 62 government schools will be chargesheeted because of the poor results of the subjects taught by them in Jalandhar district. 

An officer of the Education Department said the chargesheet was being prepared at the head office level and will be served on the teachers concerned immediately after it was received at the District Education Office. It may be mentioned here that results in many schools had come below 20 per cent. DEO (Secondary) Joginder Dass said the teachers would be asked to explain the reasons for the poor pass percentage. — TNS

Class X Results
137 DAV students get above 90 pc marks

Spring Dale Public School’s Sidak Singh Dhillon has bagged 96.83 marks while DAV Public School’s Tanya Sharma and Ishan Anand have scored 96.8 per cent each in the class X examination of the CBSE this year. Closely following them was Aabdeep Kaur of Sri Guru Harkrishan Senior Secondary Public School with 96.4 per cent.

Snigdha Arora of DAV Public School got 96.6 per cent marks, while Kanav Grover and Aayushi Rai got 96.4 per cent each. Nine students of the school scored above 96 per cent, while 20 students got above 95 per cent and 108 students above 90 per cent.

Spring Dale School claimed that its 68 students aggregated more than 90 per cent marks, while 19 students achieved more than 95 per cent. Megha Saggar, Sehaj Kaur Boparai and Simrat Kaur of the School scored 95.8 per cent apiece and Danish Deep Singh and Harneer Kaur Sandhu 95 per cent each.

Out of 184 students of Sri Guru Harkrishan Senior Secondary Public School appeared in the examination, 32 students scored 90 per cent and above. While Gurpreet Kaur, Ramneek Kaur and Jasmeet Kaur scored 94.4 per cent each, Kiranpreet Kaur secured 94.2 per cent.

Abnash Kumar Patra of Kendriya Vidyalaya-3 got 94 per cent marks and Alok Prakash Tripathi 92 per cent.

Navneet Kaur of Senior Study (II) secured 95.2 per cent. Out of 154 students of the school, 23 students got above 90 per cent.

Piyush of Bhavan’s SL Public School got 96.4 per cent, closely followed by Ankit (93.6 per cent), Vaishali (93 per cent) and Sahil and Yashima (91.2 per cent each).

Thirteen students of Shri Ram Ashram Public School got more than 90 per cent marks. Nitish Chopra scored 94.2 per cent, closely following was Sahil Mahajan (94 per cent).

Ramneek Kaur of Delhi Public School scored 93.6 per cent and Raghav Aneja (91.6 per cent).

ATM card holder feels cheated

The General Railway Police has registered a case of fraud and theft against unidentified persons who fraudulently withdrew money from the ATM using the card of complainant Dalbir Singh which had been stuck in the machine.

Dalbir Singh, a resident of Rajinder Nagar, in his complaint filed with the police held officials of the bank responsible for their callous attitude that resulted in the incident.

Dalbir, having his account in HDFC Bank, said due to the recent strike in the region, he used the ATM of the State Bank of India situated at Amritsar railway station. However, as soon as he filed the password his card got stuck in the machine. He said despite a lot of efforts he could not retrieve his card. He said that a youth who was present there tried his hands. The youth asked him to approach the officials of the SBI. However, he alleged that the bank officials did not pay any heed to his request for more than an hour and when he went to the ATM cabin, his card was not there. In the evening, he added, he got the message from the bank that Rs 25,000 had been withdrawn from his account. ASI Ram Kishan said the matter was under investigation and footage of the CCTV cameras was being taken from the bank to identify the accused. — TNS

13 clear IIT-JEE from Amritsar

Performance of local candidates in the IIT-JEE examination has come down this time with only silver lining being Varjeet Walia, who secured the 1059th rank. Previously, topper in Amritsar Amik Singh had bagged the 25th rank in the country.

The Senior Study School claimed that its student Varjeet Walia was the topper in Amritsar. A karate black belt and an impressive fencing player, Varjeet was the only student from Punjab who secured the coveted “Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana” fellowship last year.

Although impressive number of students from the holy city join prestigious engineering institutes in the country every year, this time only 13 candidates managed to clear the IIT-JEE examination with topper getting the 1059th and lowest 7645th rank. Radical Institute, a private engineering coaching centre, claimed that its seven candidates managed to clear IIT.

Quadruplets born

Quadruplets (two boys and two girls) were born to Rupinder Kaur, wife of Naunihal Singh of Ballarhwal village, near Hargobindpur, at a private hospital on the Jalandhar road here today.

Though the babies have been born premature, they are progressing well and their average weight is 1.5 kg. The husband of Rupinder Kaur lives in Greece.

3 arrested with poppy husk

The Special Narcotics Cell (SNC) today seized a huge quantity of poppy husk and arrested three inter-state drug smugglers in this connection. However, one of their accomplices escaped.

The accused, identified as Jaswant Singh, Ashok Kumar and Gurdip Singh, all residents of Moga, were nabbed from the Sahali-Harike road in Tarn Taran police district when they were going to deliver the contraband. Kingpin of the gang Sukhpal Singh, also of Moga, escaped the police net.

According to the information received here, acting on specific information from the Counter Intelligence Department, Ludhiana, a special team of the SNC and the Counter Intelligence Department of Ludhiana was formed which nabbed the culprits and seized 19 bags containing 323 kg of poppy husk from a Scorpio vehicle (PB-29-H-0417).

Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused indulged in the poppy husk trade in the Malwa region and were trying to expand their horizon to Majha.

Meanwhile, the Amritsar city police seized 100 gm of smack and nabbed drug smuggler Baldev Singh of Buttar village in this connection. A case has been registered.
