No security cover for VIPs till June-end
Dehradun, April 26 Notably, with the onset of summer, tourist inflow into the state has started increasing. Besides the hill stations such as Nainital and Mussoorie, wildlife sanctuaries and parks in Uttarakhand witness huge rush of tourists from May onwards. Likewise, lakhs of pilgrims visit the state during the Char Dham yatra. Apart from Char Dhams - Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath - pilgrims also visit Hemkund Sahib. Since there is always a rush of VIPs and VVIPs during this season, most of whom come to Uttarakhand for the pilgrimage, the state government has to make elaborate security arrangements for them. While in the past necessary security cover has been provided to them, this time it is difficult as additional security has been provided to institutions and places prone to terror attacks. Last year, Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav along with his family had visited Badrinath Dham. Besides, Priyanka Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi had visited the Jim Corbett National Park in Nainital. The All-India Congress Committee (AICC) president Sonia Gandhi also visits Kosani once a year. Meanwhile, sources said Chief Secretary Indu Kumar Pandey had already shot off letters in this regard to governments of all the states and Union Territories, judges and other important offices. The letter also mentions that if any of the VIP/VVIP has planned to visit Uttarakhand, he/she must postpone it till the end of June otherwise the state government would not be able to provide the desired security to the guest. |

Swami: Ill-health behind decision not to contest
Dehradun, April 26 "Considering my health and age, I preferred not to contest the elections. However, as far as campaigning is concerned, I am actively electioneering for the party candidates," he said. Swami, however, failed to give any convincing reply as to why his photograph was missing from the hoardings, banners and posters of the BJP election campaign. Speaking in context of the polls, Swami said if voted to power, NDA's priority would be to get the "black money" of Indians back from Swiss Banks. He also elaborated the action plan that the NDA would adopt to get the money back. "But what is unfortunate is that the Congress never bothered to initiate any steps in this regard," he rued. Meanwhile, terming the Congress as the "enemy" of poor people, BJP Health Minister and state spokesman Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has said that people of this country are fed up with the capitalistic approach of the UPA government. Highlighting the issue of increasing suicides in the country, Nishank said finding themselves in a hapless situation on account of skyrocketing prices, poor people are compelled to end their life. "It is ironical that prices of sugar, pulses and flour have almost doubled and a common man is not able to get even two square meals a day; still the Congress is claiming that UPA government has performed excellently," he quipped. Reacting to accusations of the Congress leaders with respect to the inquiry reports submitted by the Sharma Commission, Nishank said they are scared and issuing misleading statements. "If Congress leaders are clean, they should welcome submission of the report," he said. |

At Tehri, Khanduri campaigns for Rana
Dehradun, April 26 Addressing election meetings at Chamiyala and Gaza in Tehri district in favour of BJP candidate Jaspal Rana, Khanduri charged that the foodgrains and LPG quota given to the states by the Centre has been reduced for Uttarakhand. He blamed the Congress for its failure to check growing inflation and increasing unemployment. He alleged that despite corruption, communalism and increasing terrorism, the Central government has failed to make stringent laws to deal with the situation. Regarding the BJP promise to bring black money lying in Swiss banks back to the country, Khanduri said Congress leaders are making a hue and cry on the issue since it was their corrupt leaders and officials who swindled money and deposited it in Swiss banks. "What is wrong in making a promise to bring back the black money," he said. The CM said a lot of schemes were announced by the UPA in the past five years but nothing was done on the ground. On the issue of change of name of the state from Uttaranchal to Uttarakhand, Khanduri said the Congress government changed the name but the BJP did not make it an issue. Khanduri said he considers himself a common man who wants to serve people of the state and the country. |

Chopper charges raise dust
Dehradun, April 26 He said the BJP government in the state, perturbed over the massive turnout at Congress rallies, was resorting to cheap tactics such as not allowing helicopters carrying Congress leaders to land. He alleged that four election meetings in Kumoan, three each in Pauri Garhwal and Chamoli and eight in Haridwar had been cancelled with the the local administration not allowing the helicopters to land. “Under pressure from the state government, the administrative staff is not permitting the choppers to land at scheduled places. At Kotdwar, the SDM has not been in his office for the last three days making it difficult for the party to get permission to land its choppers,” he said. Arya said a written complaint would be submitted to the Election Commission on “misuse” of official machinery by the BJP government to “ sabotage” Congress campaigning.
