CM campaigns in Munna Singh’s home turf
Dehradun, April 19 Since Munna left BJP, Chief Minister Khanduri has been saying that his departure from the party at the crucial juncture would have no effect on the prospects of the BJP in the state. He said that Munna Singh left the party because of his personal ambitions. The ruling BJP has been more severe in its attack on Munna Singh Chauhan. They allege that Munna Singh had come from outside and never adjusted himself in his new home and finally left. But apart from the Munna Singh episode, the main worry of Khanduri has been the resignation given by the alliance partner UKD minister Diwakar Bhatt. The Chief Minister has not yet accepted the resignation of Bhatt and held consultations with him last evening. It was believed that Khanduri did try to persuade Diwakar Bhatt to reconsider his decision. Diwakar Bhatt, a staunch supporter of continuing with the BJP alliance, was under immense pressure from party rank and file to quit the alliance to contest the Lok Sabha elections. UKD workers were agitated that the ruling BJP did not even consider giving one seat out of five to alliance partner UKD. Following the development, UKD decided to contest from all five seats. The situation was embarrassing for the party as on one hand, the party was sharing power with the BJP and on the other, fighting against it in the Lok Sabha elections. Bowing to the pressure from party rank and file and other senior leaders, Diwakar Bhatt resigned from the state cabinet and had resisted pressure from the BJP to reconsider his decision. He said that a final decision about withdrawal of support to the Khanduri-led BJP government would be taken by the party in a meeting on April 22. Khanduri, who started campaigning after nearly three weeks of rest following operation for removal of stones from his gall bladder, finds himself in a tough situation where he has to manage the campaign of the ruling BJP amid severe blows given by Munna Singh and Diwakar Bhatt. |

MKD chief to contest from Haridwar
Haridwar, April 19 Leaders of the party voiced their concern over the second-hand treatment meted out to people of plain areas of Saharanpur-Bijnore and Muzzafarnagar by the Uttar Pradesh government, and said the party will fight for induction of these places in Uttarakhand. Asif Ali, general secretary of MKD, said constant neglect of the people living in the plain belt of Haridwar-Roorkee-Bijnore-Saharanpur by political parties has eventually led MKD to field a candidate from this seat. "We demand induction of Bijnore-Sahranpur-Muzaffarnagar in Uttarakhand as it will facilitate development of the whole area. Farmers, local traders and even the government will benefit from it," said Verma. MKD leaders also criticised the state government and other political parties for remaining silent over the issues of caste certificate, quota of kerosene, farm subsidy and appointments in government services. "Some political parties are fighting this election in Haridwar over the issue of 'hill-plain divide' which shows their pseudo mentality, but our Dal voices 'Uttaranchal Maidani Ekta' as its slogan. We have basic issues in our agenda which are related to the public and farmers," said Asif Ali. When questioned why the Dal did not raise the issue of induction of Saharanpur-Bijnore belt at the time of creation of Uttaranchal from Uttar Pradesh in the year 2000, MKD leaders said it is only now that the people of these belts have realised the benefits of being in Uttarakhand. Others present on the occasion were Chaudhari Mullan Singh, Lal Ji Singh Gujjar, Gaurav Pawar, Surendra Aggarwal, Dehradun district chief, Amzal Ali, Haridwar district chief, central secretary Babu Bhagwan Singh, Rajesh Kushwaha, among others. |

SAD Delhi sets up unit
Dehradun, April 19 While announcing the decision at an impressive conference, organised to launch the Uttarakhand unit of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi), here today, the newly appointed president Manjeet Singh Sudan said Sikhs in the state will support the Congress because of its "people-friendly" policies and an able Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. The chief guest on the occasion was president of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (DSGPC) Paramjit Singh Sarna. Addressing the gathering, Sarna said the Congress has successfully run the country for five years. "The government faired well on all fronts, particularly development," he said, while exhorting the Sikh electorate to support the Congress candidates whole-heartedly. Congress MLA Dinesh Aggarwal in his speech alleged that the BJP has always betrayed people of the country. He said under the leadership of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi the country has progressed a lot and now the entire world recognises India as one of the powerful nations. Aggarwal said BJP leader LK Advani is day-dreaming that he is the PM in-waiting because the verdict of people of India will be in favour of Congress and UPA. Senior Congress leader Suryakant Dhasmana accused Uttarakhand government of "deliberately" ignoring the issues pertaining to the Sikh community. Dhasmana claimed that the Congress has always taken the Sikh community along and will see to it that issues pertaining to them are taken up on priority. "Our election hoardings are being removed forcibly and a helicopter was not allowed to land in Pitthoragarh district. This clearly reflects that BJP government in the state is panicking," he said. Prominent among others present at the conference were former Congress Minister Hira Singh Bisht and Congress candidate from Tehri constituency Vijay Bahuguna's wife Sudha Bahuguna. |

SP working on manifesto for state
Dehradun, April 19 National general secretary of Samajwadi Party Vinod Barthwal while confirming the move said the manifesto would be separate from the national agenda of the party and include issues of local importance. He said a committee headed by senior party leader SN Sachan has been given the task of preparing the manifesto. Meanwhile, Barthwal refuted media reports that the party was against computers or English. “We firmly believe that computers should not be the means to make people jobless, but rather to promote information technology. We are also not against English as a subject, but will resent its usage as a medium of study and prefer promotion of Hindi and local languages,” he said. When asked on the party’s possible candidate for Tehri seat, Barthwal said it was for the high command to decide. He reminded that an alliance between SP and Congress would have benefited both and blamed the latter for the deadlock. Taking a dig at both the Congress and BJP, he said both the parties were depending on turncoats for furthering their electoral ambitions. He said while the SP was banking on development as its poll plank, Congress and Responding to a query, Barthwal said SP was serious contender for the Haridwar and Naintial seats. He revealed that the party candidate from Haridwar Ambrish Kumar would be filing his nomination on April 21. “We are expecting some big leaders on the day of nomination, which in all possibility will include Samajwadi Party’s star campaigner Sanjay Dutt,” he said. SP supremo Mulayum Singh Yadav, Amar Singh, Jaya Bachchan and Jayaprada would be campaigning in the state,
he added. |

No party on green track: Bahuguna
Dehradun, April 19 “I am perturbed by their silence. None of the parties have so far included these issues in their manifesto. Mindless issues are being raked up.Their talk of development remains focussed on the GDP growth alone while people in Uttarakhand do not have control over their resources.” He said in Uttarakhand “development has come at a cost to the people of the state, who have lost their homes and cultivable land.Dams are being built on almost all rivers bringing untold misery to the people but all this has failed to stir our politicians.” He emphasised that voters should pressurise the parties to include policies that promote development without disturbing the environment. Padma Shri Dr Anil Joshi, patron of the Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organisation, expressed dismay at the politicians’ inability to accord priority to issues of jal, jungle and jamin (water, forests and land) in these elections. The two activists released a document that suggests utilisation of 12 per cent of royalty (from power projects), that the state government receives from the central government, be given free of cost to gram sabhas and blocks and large-scale plantation of broad-leaf trees in areas that are often hit by landslides. Opposing the concept of large hotels, the document calls for small guesthouses in order to boost local economy. |

Jankranti activisits to back BSP
Dehradun, April 19 Founder president of Bharatiya Jankranti Party Ajay Kaushik claimed that their party was intact and there was no question of assimilation of their party into the Congress. He asserted that except Rajni Rawat, not even a single member of party has joined the Congress. He also asserted the workers would not be cowed by the turncoat act of their president and the organisation was now backing the BSP instead. He said it was treachery that while the Bhartiya Jankranti Party workers were holding a public meeting in favour of Rajni Rawat in Tehri, she was joining the Congress in Dehradun. Welcoming the Bhartiya Jankranti Party’s support for the BSP, Munna Singh Chauhan told the gathering that the votes that Rajni Rawat got when she unsuccessfully contested for the post of Dehradun Mayor were both anti-Congress and anti-BJP. Munna Singh Chauhan said while the Congress and BJP were contesting for second and third positions, the BSP was number one and far ahead of others. |

I am no outsider, says Rawat
Haridwar, April 19 Addressing the media briefing here today, Rawat took exception to allegations by Samajwadi Party candidate Ambrish Kumar, who called him an "outsider". "Ganga emerges from the hills and then flows in the plains. How can they be alienated from each other?" questioned Rawat. He said although Samajwadi Party had won last time on the issue of exclusion of Haridwar from Uttarakhand, now the people of the district have well understood that their best interests are in remaining with the state. Rawat said for the past three decades he was in politics and has been working assiduously for the people of Haridwar for the last ten years. Therefore, nobody had the right to question his candidature. When questioned on the poor state of infrastructure in Haridwar, Rawat said he was working in this direction. 20 per cent suffer from infertility, says expert

Farmers’ agenda, water
Thano/Mendha, April 19 “Water scarcity is our biggest problem. Due to scanty rainfall, our fields are also dry. So, we will vote for that party only, which will solve our problems,” said Lila Negi, a farmer. Farmers also complain
that politicians only surface during polls. “During every election, party candidates come and make false promises. But once the elections are over, they forget about their promises and don't even bother to enquire about our welfare. They should ask themselves on what basis should they go and ask the people for votes,” said Surendar Uniyal, another
agitated farmer. Others feel whether it’s the Congress party or the BJP, if
they don't fulfill the farmers’ demands, they should be condemned and rejected. —

World record in breeding silkworm eggs
Nainital, April 19 The average eggs per moth at the research centre are in the range of 240 to 260 as compared to China's 160 to 200 eggs. The number of eggs per gram in the research centre is 108-110 in comparison with China's 120 eggs per gram. These yardsticks signify that the eggs of Oak Tasar Research Centre are healthy. The main reason for the success can be attributed to the innovative measures taken by the scientists at the centre. "We provide good feed to the silk worms due to which the silk worm gains more weight. “When it converts into pupa, it becomes big in size because of which the moth is also big in size and when the moth is big, it will certainly give more number of eggs," said Dr RS
Yadav, a scientist of Regional Oak Tasar Reserch Center. The institute has also been taking special care to minimise the egg losses. "Earlier the eggs were kept in wooden baskets, now they are kept in plastic baskets. “They have been kept in an aerated environment because of which the scrapping is also good and the recovery of eggs is more," said Dr Somesh
Paliwal, incharge of
Regional Oak Tasar Research Centre. The Appropriate Technology India (ATI), the biggest silk research organisation in the country, has given an award to the Regional Oak Tasar Research Centre in recognition of its immense contribution in the field of Oak Tasar development. Manipur, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and Jammu and Kashmir are the main oak tasar producing states in India. India is the second largest producer of silk after China and the largest consumer of silk in the world. —
