Congress is only for the rich, says Khanduri
Umesh Dewan
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, April 16
Addressing mediapersons at the BJP headquarters here this afternoon, Chief Minister Maj Gen (retd) BC Khanduri accused the Congress of being a “communal” party. While asserting that BJP has unnecessarily been tagged as communal, Khanduri said it was the Congress that divided the country in 1947.

“The decision to create Pakistan for the Muslims itself shows the communal tendencies of the Congress,” he said, while adding that both Hindus and Muslims are till date suffering because of the wrong decision taken by the then leaders of the Congress.

Khanduri also accused the Congress for the poor condition of the Muslim community today. “Statements like Muslims have the first right over the country’s treasury are just an attempt to garner votes,” he alleged. Citing an example of the Congress party’s manifesto for the 1989 general election, Khanduri said for the Christians in Mizoram the manifesto mentioned that if voted to power, the Congress would ensure that Christian missionaries provide education to them.

“And at the same time during his visit to Ayodhya, Rajiv Gandhi, had said that they will ensure ‘Ram Rajya’ there. This is nothing but vote bank politics on communal lines,” Khanduri alleged.

The CM also raised the issue of 1984 anti-Sikh riots and accused the Congress of “deliberately” taking no action against those involved in the riots.

Commenting on the performance of the UPA government, Khanduri said that last five years were like a “nightmare” for the common man. “The number of people living below poverty line has increased by 5.5 crore during the past five years. As popularised, the Congress hand is not with the common man. The party is only concerned about the interests of the rich and mighty,” said Khanduri.

He said had the government not done away with POTA, the country would not have faced terror attacks like that in Mumbai. “There is no check on Bangladeshi infiltration. As many as three crore Bangladeshis have sneaked into Assam. A day will come when there will be a Bangladeshi government there,” he said.

Khanduri also castigated the government for delaying the execution of Afzal Guru, the convict in the Parliament attack case.

The CM claimed that if NDA was voted to power, it would initiate the exercise to bring back “black money” amounting to Rs 75 lakh crore, which was lying in the Swiss Bank.

Speaking in context of Uttarakhand, Khanduri said the Congress government at the Centre reduced the tenure of the industrial package given to the state by NDA, which has severely affected industrialisation. Regarding the Dixit Committee report on the issue of the permanent capital of Uttarakhand, Khanduri said the report has reached them after a period of seven years and it will take some time to scrutinise it before making it public.

Meanwhile, Gorkhas vow support

Dehradun: Leaders of the Gorkha Democratic Front (GDF), Uttarakhand, under their president Surya Vikram Sahi, today pledged support to the BJP during the forthcoming elections.

Khanduri said in its manifesto BJP has inducted several demands of the Gorkhas and their support would be crucial during the elections. He, however, was evasive on the issue of whether the BJP manifesto mentions the demand of a separate state of Gorkhaland.

Homeless, Van Gujjars hold protest at Rajaji Park
Denied permission to move into Govind Pashu Vihar National Park in Uttarakashi, their summer abode, the community has been driven to the point of starvation
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, April 16
As many as hundred Van Gujjar families are stranded in Dehradun and Tehri districts as the Uttarakhand forest authorities have yet again denied them permission to move into Govind Pashu Vihar National Park in Uttarakashi, which is the summer abode of Van Gujjars settled in Shivalik region.

Peeved by the apathetic attitude of Park authorities, Van Gujjars, including a large number of women, staged a demonstration outside Rajaji Park director SS Raisaily’s office today against denial of permission to enter their summer abode in Uttarkashi. Notably, Raisaily is also the director of Govind Pashu Vihar National Park.

On his part, Raisaily assured Van Gujjars of a solution of the problem as soon as possible.

He also called representatives of the group to his Tilak Road office on Friday.

Van Gujjar leaders are apprehensive that at this stage any delay in permission will push them to starvation.

The protesters also pointed out that although they had a legal and recognised right over forests, these were hardly recognised by the authorities. They alleged that while forest rights have been provided to traditional forest dwellers in BJP-ruled states such as Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Jharkhand, no such rights are available in Uttarakhand.

“We have not been offered any settlement by forest department and our rights stand curtailed,” said Firoz Kasana, a protester.

Meanwhile, Van Gujjars have returned to their camping sites at river Asan, Yamuna, Herbertpur, Vikasnagar, Kalsi, and Nainbag on Uttarkashi route and are waiting for a green signal from the forest authorities before heading for Govind Pashu Vihar.

Neena Sharma/Tribune News Service

Dehradun, April 16
The Central Braille Press (CPB) housed at the National Institute for the Visually Handicapped (NIVH) is busy churning out “dummy” ballot papers in braille for visually impaired voters of Bihar’s 27 Lok Sabha constituencies that go to the polls in the next phase.

The institute had also dispatched “dummy” ballot papers for the 13 constituencies in Bihar that went to the polls today. The exercise is being undertaken to ensure that the visually impaired are not left out of the election process and are able to exercise their voting right as enshrined in the Constitution.

In all, the press will be printing 62,000 ballot papers for the 40 constituencies of Bihar. Further, it has been entrusted with the task of printing “dummy” ballot papers for the states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh that go to the polls in the next phase.
The press has two braille-embossing machines imported from Norway. The model (440SW series-I) manages to print 440 ballot papers in a minute, while braillo (400SR) also imported, prints 400 pages in the same time.

“The NIVH has also received queries from the government of Uttar Pradesh. Work will begin as soon as the state government gives us the ink print of the ballot paper, indicating the number of candidates in fray after the last day of withdrawal of nominations. The information will then be transcribed in braille,” explained Anuradha Mohit, director of the institute.

Though the system of ballot papers has been done away with following the introduction of electronic voting machines, to ensure that the visually impaired are able to vote without prejudice and in complete secrecy, the “dummy” ballot will be used for the first time in the general election. The ballot papers in English and other languages carry details about the candidates, their names, party affiliation and their serial numbers. These are pasted at every polling centres.

Tribune News Service

Haridwar, April 16
The academic session 2009-10 for the Uttarakhand board come with its own set of problems. First, the session started 15 days late due to the postponement of the board and internal examinations of the previous session on account of the leakage of question papers.

District education officer Chandrakanta Sharma said that the 15-day derailment was due to the rescheduling of the examinations which was necessitated by the leak of question papers.

The education calendar of the Uttarakhand School Education Board states that there would be 220 working days while 137 days have been slotted for holidays.

Although the new session has started, the students don’t have books to study. The state education board provides free books to students but this time, their distribution to the respective district offices and to schools has not been done.

Parents of students of government schools are quite angry. Swati Rana, whose child studies in Class VI at Jwalapur Inter-college Government School said, “In the next few days, the school ground will host election rallies. After all this, teachers put the onus on students for poor academic performance.”

The department is facing a shortage of teachers due to the ongoing checking of high school and intermediate-level answer sheets. Most teachers are busy in this duty and thus are unable to teach students. Bhalla Intermediate College principal Hukum Singh said that there was a shortage of teachers due to the checking of the board examinations.

What has added to the teacher’s burden is that this time, the percentage of copies being rechecked has increased. To ensure copies are correctly checked, the board has instructed that 50 per cent of checked copies would be rechecked compared to the previous years when 15 per cent of checked copies were re-checked. For this, special appointments of teachers has been done.

Bodybuilding needs more sponsors, says Rahul Bisht
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, April 16
Rahul Bisht has clinched a gold medal at the South Asia Bodybuilding Championship that was held in Varanasi from April 9 to April 12. Rahul Bisht could be another face from the state in the world of bodybuilding, after Mukesh Thakur, who clinched Mr Asia title in 2007.

Rahul has already started bringing laurels for the state. He has set his eyes on Mr Asia bodybuilding championship, which is to be held at Iran in August, this year.

Rahul believes that bodybuilding could be a good career opportunity for those who wish to take up the game seriously.

People generally link bodybuilding with fitness but it can also be a dependable career option.

“I started bodybuilding six years back with an aim to have a fit body. I was actually dragged by my friends into the bodybuilding. It slowly evolved into a profession for me. One could find lot of job opportunity in this field and can further grow in the days to come,” said Rahul.

“In all these years, I have learnt that bodybuilding is all about putting your body forward in right perspective.

“Indians who are gifted with small joints compared to bodybuilders from other countries are better portrayal of their body fitness,” said Rahul.

We are not very successful at the international bodybuilding events purely because the sponsors have limited their resources to cricket.

This deprives budding bodybuilders from nurturing their talent, said Rahul.

Diet is the most expensive and essential part in bodybuilding. Rahul spends around Rs 15,000 per month on his diet.

“I take six to seven meals per day, that consist of good amount of proteins. It all comes with good diet and good daily workout,” said Rahul.

The young bodybuilder spends two hours in the gymnasium.

“It is just a game of focusing on a particular body part everyday.

“No one should expect to see a miraculous change in their bodies in a short span of time. Changes come in the body over a period of time,” he said.

He also made an appealed to the
government to give some financial support to bodybuilders who have represented the state at the national and international tournaments so that they do not leave bodybuilding midway.
