Jalandhar, April 16
Four persons, including three of a family, were killed when the motorcycle they were riding on was hit by a truck on the Nakodar-Noormehal road, near here, today.

A one-and-a-half-year-old girl sustained serious injuries in the accident and was rushed to a private hospital in Jalandhar.

The tragedy occurred at Sanghe Khalsa village when Gurbhachan Singh (40), a resident of Rehmanpur village in Nakodar, was riding a motorcycle with his sister-in-law Bindia (32), her daughters Sheetal (14), Muskan (one year and six months) and Anu (six months) on pillion and going to Jodhewal Basti in Ludhiana. The truck was heading towards Nakodar from Noormehal.

The motorcyclist reportedly lost control over the vehicle and was crushed under the rear wheels of the truck, loaded with wheat. Cop’s transfer sought

Gurdaspur, April 16
The Congress here today demanded the transfer of a wireless operator Gurinderjit Singh of the Punjab Police for violating model code of conduct by campaigning for BJP candidate Vinod Khanna along with the local MLA. — TNS

Amritsar, April 16
The oversize code-violating poster of sitting member of Parliament Navjot Singh Sidhu has been removed from Nehru Shopping Complex of the Improvement Trust following publication of the news item, “How they love to flaunt” in these columns.

Interestingly, a hand-written note on the hoarding, with the heading - To whom it may concern - had read , “We are putting this hoarding on our own and we have not been pressurised by anyone. We will abide by the order of the Election Commission.”

The posters of cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu had also mushroomed on the Bhandari Bridge even as he himself had launched a cleanliness drive in the holy city by removing his own posters on January 24.

However, posters of Congress candidate O.P. Soni have also been put on various buildings in the city. During a tour from Amritsar to Pathankot, this correspondent did not see even a single poster of any politician belonging to any party. While the border district of Gurdaspur has been strictly following the model code of conduct so far as eclipsing of the government or private buildings with political posters are concerned, the administration of Amritsar has been a mute spectator to its gross violation.

Earlier, the Municipal Corporation had taken up the initiative to remove the “Lotus Chowks” put up by the BJP after the matter was highlighted in The Tribune.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court had imposed a blanket ban on such hoardings on the rail track and roads within the municipal corporation limits as they distracted the attention of drivers and caused accidents.

However, it is learnt that the BJP had secured the permission through back door to put up hoardings on the Bhandari Bridge on behalf of a private company, which had the advertisement rights in the corporation limits.

The administration had also removed the oversize banners of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and other senior Akali leaders on the controversial building of Prof Darbari Lal, a former Deputy Speaker, Punjab Vidhan Sabha, which is facing a vigilance probe, when the issue was highlighted in The Tribune.

Amritsar, April 16
A mysterious insect has created panic among the residents of the Telephone Revenue Account (TRA) colony here. A Health Department team, led by Deputy Commissioner Bhagwant Singh and Civil Surgeon, today visited the area and ordered for insecticide spray.

The inhabitants of the colony said the insects had frightened the people of the area who had complained to the health authorities in this regard.

The Health Department team that visited the area included Malaria Officer Dr Rakesh Gupta and Dr Naresh Sharma. The insect collector, accompanying the team, collected the insects, some of which would be sent to the Department of Entomology of Guru Nanak Dev University to find out the family of the insect.

The health authorities found that huge quantity of waste flowers were lying in a nearby vacant plot, which they suspected might be the reason for breeding of these insects. They also ordered for cleaning up of the vacant land.

Meanwhile, the residents claimed that even the insecticides had been sprayed for three times earlier also but no concrete impact had been seen so far. The insect bite creates swelling with agonising pain and irritation, which remains for a few days. Even the doctors were bewildered over this new phenomena and seeking assistance of the university to find out the traits of this insects.
