PTU passes vote on account
Jalandhar, March 19 While there were issues such as allocating budget for scholarships for rural students and holding international conferences, none of the items were discussed. The members simply passed the budget for committed expenses, leaving all fresh proposals pending in a bid to avoid any more controversies. Registrar Sarojini Gautam Sharda, however, said, “It is not because of the code imposition that we have done this. We have simply got the actual budget passed rather than the estimated one.” Others who attended the meeting were board of governors members Dr R.S. Khandpur and Chander Mohan, PTU VC Dr Rajneesh Arora, dean (examination) Dr N.P. Singh and controller (finance)
S.K. Misra. BCA fee hike likely
The university officials are contemplating on enhancing the tuition fee component of BBA and BCA to bring it on par with other non-AICTE courses, including B.Sc (biotechnology) and B.Sc (medical lab technology). Officials revealed that ever since BBA and BCA were started almost a decade back, there had been no fee hike. But the courses such as biotechnology and medical lab technology, which started last year, had higher tuition fee even as the faculty norms of 1:20 were common for all such courses. Dr V.K. Arora, dean, academics, said the issue was discussed in the academic council meeting. An effort was being made to equalise the tuition fee component of all non-AICTE courses, leaving aside other components such as lab charges that could be variable. “We are yet to calculate the difference. A committee has been formed, which will carry its report further to BoG for final approval,” he pointed out. The BBA/BCA students had been paying nearly Rs 22,000 fee annually as of now. The tuition fee component of the total amount was quite low as it included other funds such as those for library, sports and cultural activities. The college principals rue that the issue has been lingering on since the past one year. “Since there were no academic council meetings for almost the whole year, the matter remained pending for long,” they said. Spurt in applications
As many as 54 institutes have applied for non-AICTE courses with the university this time. Dr Arora said the response was far better this time than previous years. He said most of the applications had come for B.Sc (hotel management), BSc (IT), MSc (IT) and BSc (biotechnology). |

‘Hindrock’ leaves town euphoric
Jalandhar, March 19 In a concert held at Lovely Professional University (LPU) here on Wednesday night, the band had the city crowd rocking to a three-hour long dose of loud, mad music from the cult performers. Driving the LPU crowd crazy, the band which had DJ on bass guitar, Benny on keys, Hitesh on guitar, Ashwani on drums, Rakesh on dholak and Prashant on tabla, played popular hits like “dhoom pichuk dhoom”, “maeri”, “tu hi meri zindagi” and the numbers like “Sohneya” and “Mehfuz” from their new album “Mehfuz”. Into their 11th year, the city enjoyed their music as much as the madness with lead singer Palash pulling up the “vridh adhyapakgan” and talking to the students, making them sing his songs and flash their mobile phones in the air. The band came out with popular Bollywood and Punjabi numbers but a bit of fun was stolen away due to the fact that quite a major chunk of the performance was given away to covers. Excerpt of The Tribune’s interview with lead vocalist of the band Palash Sen:
How does it feel performing at Jalandhar ? Great. The last time we performed was two years ago at the Apeejay College of Fine Arts and this time too it was a huge crowd. You’ve grown your hair. What’s the reason for your changed look? “Katwane ka samay nahi milaa” (laughs). No it’s nothing intentional, the long hair looked nice so I let them stay. Euphoria has been together for the past 10 years. What’s the secret? I guess we are sincere and believe in what we are doing. We respect each other and our audience and connect well with them. Does your culture help you understand your audience better? It sure does. I am half Bengali, half Dogri and my wife’s Punjabi. This adds to a better understanding of the people and music at large. Any Bollywood projects in the pipeline? Yep, we have a movie called “Mumbai Cutting” which has Euphoria on the score and me in the lead in the film. Then there are other movies like “Dhoondte Reh Jaoge” and “Harpal”. We are also working on a green album on world Environment. |
