DU girl commits suicide in Rohini
New Delhi, February 10 “The police was informed about the incident around 7 pm by the father of the girl. Her parents were not in the house at the time of incident. They found her hanging when they returned from market,” said a police official close to investigation. A suicide note was found near the body in which Meenu had said that she was ending her life after considering all aspects and that nobody should be held responsible for her death. The body was sent to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital for post mortem. According to information, Meenu was pursuing her graduation through correspondence. Her father Mahesh Chand Sharma, who is a government employee, told the police that she had failed in second year two times and so remained very depressed and worried about her future. However, the family had no idea that she could take such an extreme step. A case of suicide has been lodged in the Rohini police station and sleuths are investigating the matter. “A young girl has committed suicide and we want to be sure if somebody was not harassing or blackmailing her about something. We are recording the statement of her friends and relatives and cannot say much about it now,” said a police official. |
Even kids wanna make merry on V-Day
New Delhi, February 10 Apart from the typical school stuff of keeping a red rose under the desk of the one you are looking for, Valentine’s Day has become an all-out affair for kids in the city. An affair that goes far beyond the exchange of roses and cards. Mother of Anmol, a four-year-old child says, “Today even kids know the phrase, ‘I Love You’. They may not understand it, but they do smile when they hear it. My child is also going to a Valentine’s Day party arranged specially for kids. The day is no more confined to youngsters.” If kids are set to rock, can singles of the city be far behind. They are only too ready to mingle. Neeta and Shubhangi, call centre employees in Connaught Place, say, “Though I am not looking for a date, I will surely enjoy the day with my friends. We have decided to go for a movie and then for dinner. You never know we may find someone there.” A group of boys, sitting in Café Coffee Day, says, “We all are singles by choice and we feel lucky as we have a plethora of options ahead. We have decided to go for a night out and rock the day.” Married couples are also finding newer ways to add spice to their life. Remembering her college days, IT professional, Sneha Gupta says, “Before marriage, we easily get a chance to say those three golden words. But as I am working and my husband too is in media, we hardly get time to share such moments. I think this day gives me an excuse to confess to my husband: ‘I love you’.” Banu Mehta, a housewife says, “Trends are changing and so are thoughts. There was time when Valentine’s Day was connected to western culture, but gradually it has mixed into our culture and become like any other festival. I, my husband and two kids will go out to celebrate the day.” To woo their customers, hotels, nightclubs and popular restaurants are offering special schemes and discounts. From the Grand Hotel at Barakhamba Road to night clubs like Decibel and RPM, all are gearing up to make it a rocking night for youngsters. Meanwhile, the Delhi police has taken special measures to provide protection to the celebrating couples. |

Students protest bid to spoil
JNU culture
New Delhi, February 10 Students on the whole reacted quite spontaneously to JNUSU’s strike, and in a show of solidarity, students deserted all school buildings to participate in the long march. This morning’s march through the streets of JNU, which was the largest in JNU’s history, culminated in the mass gathering at the Ad Block. Over two thousand students collected at the Ad Block in a united show of strength and students say that no official was available for talks till late afternoon. “When the students refused to budge till the administration came to dialogue with the JNUSU, a negotiation ensued late in the second half of the day,” says Tapas, a student and member of JNUSU. “During the negotiations, the administration could offer no logic as to why they planned to rent out PSR, impose user charges for electricity and hike the fees for the prospectus. They could not say either why they were violating the MHRD directives on implementation of OBC reservations, or why the committee on the OBC reservations, which was set up after an agreement with JNUSU, has till date not held a single meeting,” said Tapas. Students say that though the administration was left answerless on each of these issues, they have not given any final commitment under the plea that the VC is out of town. The VC is scheduled to arrive tomorrow morning, and the administration has promised to give its response after consulting him. “There cannot be any let-up in this struggle. We have seen this administration reneging on its own logic and commitments, and even written agreements time and again,” says Sandeep Singh, president JNUSU. The JNUSU has collectively decided to continue the university strike and the mass gathering at the Ad Block tomorrow as well. Students plan to stay at the Ad Block throughout the night. They have opened a community kitchen, and will take their dinner collectively at the Ad Block. Students have been protesting against the growing signs of commercialization at the university for quite some time now. For instance, individual electricity meters are being introduced in each hostel room, with the express purpose of imposing “user charges” on electricity consumption. There is sharp 67% increase in prospectus fee for new admissions, without consultation on any forum, destruction of JNU’s rich, ecologically sensitive areas, including JNU’s famous Parthasarathy Rocks. Further, a circular has been issued to commercially rent out this space for film and ad shootings. All the functional 200 electricity poles are being unnecessarily replaced which will cost the university Rs 50 lakh. |

Skit voices pain of animals
New Delhi, February 10 “Though my name is lucky, I’m not lucky enough to receive the warmth and affection of others. My survival is dependent on the mercy of those who are kind enough to dispose their garbage and extra eatables out on streets,” said a speechless stray dog. This might sound puzzling, but yes, the speechless and helpless can also speak as they did today, courtesy Circle of Animal Lovers (CAL) and Salaam Balak Trust (SBT), NGOs working for the welfare of animals and street children during an awareness programme held at IIC in the Capital. Children, within the age group of (12-17), dressed up as animals today presented a theatrical rendition to voice the pains of animal clan and bring forth the human neglect, intolerance and selfishness that have left them vulnerable. The skit, which left the entire audience gloomy, compelling them to rethink about their attitude to animals, was directed by Pankaj and choreographed by Raj Kumar. “In Delhi, we have seen the unfortunate accidents due to monkeys and stray dogs. Actually, we have not been able to take care of stray dogs. Prevention is better than cure, but the sterilisation of dogs should be only after the birth of a puppy,” said governor of Rotary Club, Ashish Ghosh. It’s very rightly said by Mahatma Gandhi: The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated. The entire programme was aimed at sensitising people about the animals. Meanwhile, Irani Mukherjee, the founder of CAL, has urged for support from the civil society in order to manage the NGO, which shelters animals at five places in the Capital and one in Gurgaon. |
