Parents’ council slams school fee hike
New Delhi, February 5 According to a spokesperson of the DPC, the common man feels that the Delhi government has shaken hands with the private schools. To raise the issue on a bigger platform, the DPC has sought meetings with Leader of Opposition L.K. Advani, Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi and its general secretary Rahul Gandhi to apprise them about the injustice being done to the people and will demand the application of principle of natural justice. At present, there are around 15 lakh students studying in different private schools in Delhi. The magnitude of the income generated through the fee hike would run into crores, but the whole pressure of the hike is likely to be put on the parents, which is unjustified, arbitrary and illogical, the spokesman said. The DPC lambasted the Bansal Committee on whose recommendation the Delhi government has taken the decision to increase school fees in Delhi. Praveen Khandelwal, chairman of DPC, commented that the order was nothing less than a “Tughlaqi order”. Ramesh Khanna and Vijay Pal, general secretaries of DPC, while questioning the working of the Bansal Committee, demanded the government to make public as to how many parents or their organisations, private schools or their organisations, were invited in the committee to provide their viewpoint. They demanded that at the first instance, the government should declare that there will be no levy of extra financial burden on parents and provide subsidy to those schools which are charging small nominal fees, whereas, on the other hand, for other category of schools, the government should declare an economic package to meet the hike in salary of the teachers and their arrears. The DPC has demanded the government to make public the Bansal Committee report in the larger interest of the people of Delhi. It further said that the first look at the report reveals that it has been prepared in air-conditioned rooms instead of going into the ground realties of the schools and their working conditions. |
Protest against Haryana police ‘atrocities’ shifts to Delhi
New Delhi, February 5 Rakesh Yadav, general secretary of Adhikaar-The Rights Path, an NGO working for the cause of civil, consumer and human rights, claimed that attempts were made by the Haryana police to prevent people from going to Jantar Mantar. He mentioned that the NGO had written to various persons and authorities, including the President, the Prime Minister, UPA chairperson and the governor of Haryana to intervene in the matter, but so far we have not received any response. On the night of December 23, 2008, a police team of 30-40 members led by ACP Krishan Murari had entered Jama Masjid in uniform and shoes and allegedly beaten up innocent and poor labourers, rickshaw pullers and workers. It had illegally detained around 150-odd persons and mercilessly beaten them and later released them next day. The action of the police was criticised by political, social and religious leaders of several parties including Congress. However, the agitation was initiated by the head of all communities of Mewat, Zakir Hussain, ex-MLA and BSP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Gurgaon and was later joined by leaders across party lines. The incident in Jama Masjid was followed by another incident of alleged police atrocity on January 7 in neighbouring Mewat, where a police team of 200 members led by inspector Sunil Kadiyan entered the village and beat up innocent children, elderly women and pregnant lady. After several panchayats and mega panchayats in the state, the protest has now shifted to the Capital. |
Mystery shrouds death of married woman
Gurgaon, February 5 The deceased Reena’s in-laws did not inform anyone and were fully prepared for the last rites. When her family came to know of her death, they reached the cremation ground and thrashed her husband. They also informed the police of the incident. Reena’s brother Vickey told the police that they married her to Sanjay 11 years ago. He claimed that Sanjay started torturing his sister soon after the marriage and used to ask her to get money from her maternal home. Vicky said that they had given her money many times. Reena had recently asked him to give her Rs 50,000. The deceased’s mother Shankuntla Devi alleged that her son-in-law had relations with another woman Seema and this was the reason he killed her daughter. She said that Sanjay had called them to say that Reena was not well and he was taking her to AIIMS. “There are many good hospitals here too then what was the need to take her to Delhi, anything could have happened on the way,” she asserted and added that her daughter never used to let her visit her place but one day when she went to meet her without prior information, she found Sanjay with Seema in his bedroom. Devi said that Reena asked her to leave immediately as she feared that if her husband came to know that she was there he would kill her. After a few days, he actually killed her. Sanjay told the police that Reena had not been keeping well for the last few days and her condition became worse yesterday after which she died. The police has registered a case under Section 304 B, 498 A against Sanjay for demanding dowry. |

Gurgaon, February 5 Addressing a public meeting as part of his election campaign in the Pataudi Assembly segment of the district today, Chautala asked people to oust the Congress from power by voting in favour of his party’s nominees in the elections. The INLD commander, who kicked off his election campaign for the Gurgaon Lok Sabha segment from Alipur village in Sohna Assembly constituency yesterday, toured a number of villages of the area. Chautala asked people whether they were getting enough power, water and price for their agricultural produce. He asserted common people like them struggled to vote a party to power, while the government was formed by capitalists and industrialists. New Delhi, February 5 Those arrested have been identified as Mohd Sarfaraz (23), Israr (26), Ahmed Shuakeen (25), Ahmed Nafis (26) and Abdul Mehraz (27). According to the police, the cause of murder was Rs 1,000. Shanawaj wanted to buy
Israr’ motorcycle. A local resident Ahtesham had organised a meeting between the two at his shop in Taimoor Nagar where a deal was finalised between Shahnawaj and
Israr. As per the deal, Rs 16,000 was to be paid immediately while the remaining amount was to be paid in eight equal installments of Rs 2,200 to the financer. But Shahnawaj could pay only Rs 15,000 in cash to
Israr, which led to an altercation between Shanawaj’s brother Shadab and Israr and his friends over the remaining Rs 1,000. However, on the intervention of
Ahtesham, the matter was resolved and both the parties left. Later in the evening, Shahnawaj went to Ahtesham’s shop in Taimoor Nagar to attend a party hosted by
Ahtesham, where Abdul, Nafis and Israr were already present. Israr and his friends demanded the remaining Rs 1,000 from Shahnawaj which led to scuffle between them. The accused then left the party halfway threatening Shahnawaj to teach a lesson. At about 10 pm
Chhotu, Nafees, Israr, Shaukeen and Sarfaraz who were in a Maruti van intercepted Shahnawaj and challenged him to come out of his car. MCF mayor draws flak on land exchange
Faridabad, February 5 The mayor had to face the criticism in a full House meeting of the civic body. On account of the stiff opposition from the councillors, the matter was shelved and kept pending for consideration. Leading the charge against the mayor was Seema Tirka, councillor, who raised objection to the alleged persistence on the part of the authorities to exchange the piece of MCF land with that of a private person, Somnath. The councillors alleged that the private person was related to the deputy mayor of MCF, Vasant Virmani who is also alleged to be close to the Haryana’s minister for local body, A.C.Chaudhary. Chaudhary is an MLA from NIT in this district. The councillors opposed to the move alleged that the authorities had deliberately concealed the surname of the intended beneficiary. According to them, it was Virmani. The private person has about 18 acres of land near the site where the MCF intended to exchange its land with him. Presently, the market value of the land near the site is about Rs 20 lakh per acre. There is about one kanal and two marlas of land which is also owned by the private person. The moment the MCF exchanges its land with the small piece of land, the market value of the land at the site would shoot up to more than Rs 1 crore per acre. The deputy mayor was also present at the time of the debate. |

Goel seeks probe into
ration scam
New Delhi, February 5 He alleged that the ration meant for the poor was being sold in an open market in the Capital. More than 10 lakh bogus ration cards are still in existence in Delhi. The ration mafia collects ration on cheap rates through these cards and sells it in open markets on higher prices. Under below poverty line ration scheme, wheat is priced at Rs 4.65 per kg but fair shopkeepers give it to poor people at Rs 5 per kg. Similarly, rice is priced at Rs 6.15 per kg but ration shopkeepers sell it on Rs 10 per kg. The ration meant for over two lakh poor people is being sold on black market. Raids conducted on fair price shops a few days ago found that large quantity of ration for the poor was lying in shops of wholesale sellers. No person responsible for the scam has so far been punished, Goel further alleged. |
