E-device to challan traffic offenders
New Delhi, January 21 The traffic police officials will now be provided with a hand-held electronic device of the size of a mobile, for challaning the offenders on the spot. The device will have the facility of retrieving relevant data related to the vehicle or the driver from the data base of the traffic police. According to information, the device would have a touch screen and stylus and would be attached to a compact printer to print tickets in both English and Hindi. S N Shrivastava, joint commissioner (Traffic), confirmed the initiative and said that the department has sought tender in this regard for the supply of 650 CDMA or GPRS-enabled device with Blue Tooth facility. “These devices are very handy and will save manpower, time and paper work. We have sought tender for the supply of 650 such devices and things would role forward once the company is selected. Hopefully we will be able to arm our men with these devices in the next couple of months,” said Shrivastava. As per the new device, the traffic official would not only know about previous notices slapped on the vehicle, its accident record, etc but also the name of the driver, parentage, and driver’s licence details. If someone wants to pay the fine for the ticket on the spot, the device would be able to give the receipt and register the payment as well. According to traffic officials, the biggest advantage of the device would be to know the status of the vehicle—whether it is stolen or involved in crime or otherwise. “It would be a big help to us if we could feed the number in the device and find the rightful owner of the vehicle. With this handicap now, so many stolen vehicles pass by us without any hint. I am sure the device would go a long way in apprehending the vehicle thieves,” opined a traffic constable. The device would have sufficient memory with provisions for add-on external flash chip of at least 2 GB and long battery life of at least 12 hours of continuous operation. |
Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, HP fail to make it to R-Day parade
New Delhi, January 21 Amongst the major states, tableaux of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh would be missing in this year’s parade. While cutting down eight tableaux from last year’s 26, the defence ministry said they had to give more time to the gallantry award ceremony. “All the performances have to be compressed in given amount of time. Since the gallantry award ceremony requires more time this year, the number of tableaux had to go down,” said Dhananjay Mohanti, spokesperson, ministry of defence. Besides, the committee of artistes, which was judging the ideas of tableaux from different states, found that the tableaux of these states were lacking in the required criteria. Meanwhile, the folk artistes selected from different states, who arrived in the Capital a week ago, are trying hard to make their performances the best. Putting together an attractive tableau, 35 artistes from Jammu and Kashmir would show a houseboat on the Dal Lake following a Buddhist monastery that would be escorted by 10 lamas. “We have come from Ladakh to present our lama dance in front of the Jammu and Kashmir tableau,” said Lobzang Gelik, who is participating in the parade for the first time. The Jammu and Kashmir tableau is aimed at attracting tourists to the state. “We want our tourism to bloom like it used to before the violence started in the state,” said AR Barki, coordinator of the tableau. With a unique theme, the tableau of the Indian Railways would follow Kashmir. The tableau features the rail link between Jammu and Baramulla, the biggest project undertaken by Indian Railways since Independence. It shows a sleek aerodynamic compartment with passengers looking out of the splinter proof windows. Made of interesting bamboo structures, the Tripura tableau shows the magic of dexterous handicraft. Twenty-two graduation students from the state would perform the regional malssom dance. “All of us have been constructing this tableau for almost a month,” said Himanshu Debbarma, student from Tripura. The Rajasthan tableau is focusing on the history, nature and wildlife of Ranthambor. The cenotaph of Rao Raja Hammir Singh is shown in the front of the tableau. The famous gair dance would be performed by 25 folk dancers. Covered with precise Madhubani designs, the Bihar tableau would present the folk culture of Saurath Sabha and Madhubani paintings. The tableau would provide a lively glimpse of the marriage ceremony of Saurath Sabha. In the front, an old lady is shown teaching the Madhubani style of painting to some young girls. Uttarakhand would showcase its tableau for the fifth time this year. It is constructed around the theme of adventure tourism featuring river rafting, paragliding, ice-skating, snow-skiing, trekking and rock-climbing. Equipped for adventure sports, Uttarakhand has been given the responsibility to conduct the first South Asian Federation winter games. The Kerala tableau features 32 professional folk artistes, who would create an atmosphere of the Thrissur Pooram festival. With decorated elephants leading the tableau, the rear comprises the Thrissur temple. Another attractive tableau to be showcased is of Khadi Gramodyog. It shows the old Charkha of Gandhiji along with the flashy new electronic-charkha. The participants on this tableau come from different parts of the country. |
GNIDA also offers relief to builders, traders
Greater Noida, January 21 Like the Noida Authority, the GNIDA has also gone ahead in promoting industrial development. In all, 14 proposals were approved by the board, said Pankaj Agarwal, CEO of Greater Noida. Under the relief provided to the builders, who are reeling under the adverse impact of economic recession, they have been allowed to pay installments by way of paying the interest amount for the next six months. In case any builder wants to exit, 10% of his deposited amount will be forfeited and he will be offered land for the value of his remaining amount. The GNIDA has also formed a committee to monitor the progress of the builders’ work. In another important decision, the Greater Noida Board has extended the same concessions and incentives to entrepreneurs, which the Noida Authority had accorded them. This was done in deference to a long- pending demand of the entrepreneurs. In another decision the board has allowed the entrepreneurs to sell off their plots on the basis of a power of attorney. Earlier the condition was that 50 per cent of building should have been completed for 4000 sq mt plots and 15 per cent in case of 10-acre plot by the original allottee who should have also obtained a completion certificates before he could sell off the plot. The plots can also be rented out now. The GNIDA Board has also provided relief to IT companies. The FAR of plots allotted before 2004 has been changed for 12.5 to 18.7. Increased FAR will give companies more room for constructing bigger buildings. |
MCD to outsource sanitation, security in hospitals
New Delhi, January 21 The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in a move to improve its image has decided to outsource sanitation and security in its hospitals to private agencies. The move comes after the civic body received complaints of theft in hospitals and cases of misusing hospital premises. Meanwhile, according to health department officials, more than 40 per cent posts of sanitation workers and 70 per cent posts of security personnel are lying vacant. “There is lack of sanitation and security staff in municipal hospitals because of which patients face threat to infections. The staff employed by us does not work properly and their turnover is very poor,” said V.K. Monga, chairman, MCD health committee. The MCD has asked municipal commissioner K.S. Mehra to prepare a report on the matter and chalk out the strategy for privatisation depending on the number of beds and availability of sanitation and security employees in its hospitals. “Several cases due to lack of security have been reported, where relatives of a patient troubles the medical staff if the patient dies during the course of treatment. In hospitals at far off places, thefts have been taking place and people use the premises for illegal activities like drinking,” said Monga He informed that theft cases are often reported at the maternity centre in Shahdara. This is due to lack of security staff. “Municipal hospitals are vulnerable to infections because of the their filthy environment and improper bio-medical waste management,” said Vijender Gupta, Standing Committee chairman. The outsourcing will also ensure less expenditure on the salaries given by the corporation. “We employ class IV workers on contract basis. We are paying them handsomely and still we are unable to make them work mainly due to increase in their day offs, leaves and absentees,” he said. |

New Delhi, January 21 She said this while releasing a book ‘Ek Se Badhkar Ek Shikhar Mahilain’ by Sangeeta Aggarwal. Sheila emphasised on the fact that a healthy woman can only build a healthy society. The Chief Minister said more than 75 per cent work was done by women, but it went unrecognised as most of it was in the unorganised category. Speaking about the role of women in family, society and their contribution to productive activities, the Chief Minister said the city government was doing everything possible to help them secure an equal and respectable status in society. Talking about gender inequality mostly in rural areas, she said the situation could improve only when women became independent decision-makers. Education is the most important to become a decision-maker, but in many families particularly in villages women do not get the chance to study, she lamented. Dikshit called upon women to come forward and gain economic and social status through empowerment. Empowered women can create awareness and be role models to other women. |
