Three of family found murdered in
Hapur
Ghaziabad, January 11 The deceased, Bhushan Sharma (40) was an accountant with a private company, his wife Shikha Sharma (35) was a teacher in a public school and their 16-year-old daughter was Simran. However, Sharma’s 12-year-old second daughter Vanshikha was saved as she was away at her grandmother’s place in Bijnor when the murders took place. According to the police, the heads of the deceased were crushed with a heavy object and the murders had taken place around 12 to 15 hours before the bodies were discovered. The bodies lying in a pool of blood had turned black. The police has detained Bhushan’s younger brother Vishal Sharma, who is unemployed, for questioning. According to the neighbours, both Sharma’s wife and daughter were found in a semi-nude state. But the police has not confirmed whether the women were raped before being murdered. “It is too early to say anything. The possibility of rape and the motive of the murders will be known only after investigation,” DIG (Meerut Range) Aditya Mishra said. The murders came to light when Shikha, who teaches at Ryan Public School in Hapur, failed to report for duty on Saturday. “The school is run by victim’s sister Shweta. When Shikha did not turn up, her sister called her up, but failed to get a response. So she went to the victim’s house to check. She was the first to spot the bodies,” said the police. The police said the victims’ head were brutally crushed with some heavy object. There were injury marks on all the three bodies. “The entire house was ransacked,” said the police. According to Sweta, the family had no enemies. “I don’t know the reason for murders,” said Shweta Sharma. |
Delhi financier held for plotting DDA scam
New Delhi, January 11 “Deepak, 34, has been arrested from Pashchim Vihar area on charges of planning and executing a conspiracy in the scam,” Delhi Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat told IANS. Deepak is a financer and arranges money, said a police official. The Delhi police had on Friday arrested Laxmi Narayan Meena, a resident of Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu, on charges of cheating, forgery and impersonation. He was presented before a court on Saturday and was remanded into eight-day police custody. Meena, a former State Bank of India employee, was arrested after a man who was allotted a flat in the draw of lots told the police that he had neither applied for a DDA flat nor had a permanent account number (PAN) card. Meena had allegedly applied for DDA flats in the names of several people in his village, the police told the court. The investigating officer submitted that three other accused whose names cropped up in the probe - Deepak, Suresh and Narender - were yet to be arrested and Meena’s questioning was needed for this purpose. The police has also seized the software used by DDA for the draw of lots for over 5,000 flats in the national capital and sent it to a forensic laboratory in Hyderabad to find out whether it was tampered with to help rig the draw. A case under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) dealing with cheating by impersonation and forgery has been lodged. — IANS |

draw: Applicants
New Delhi, January 11 “Every year since its inception, the DDA has been involved in one scam or the other. The list of scam includes the biggest Rs 4,000 crore Dwarka housing scam done in league with the registrar of cooperative societies’ officials and property dealers, which is being probed by the CBI. The corrupt body has failed to solve even 1 per cent of the Capital’s problems,” said Ritesh Dewan, an applicant. “The DDA hyped this affordable housing scheme and took Rs 1.5 lakh as application fee from each applicant. Both private and nationalised banks encashing on the opportunity provided loans for the application, thus earning crores as interest. The interest earned by the DDA should be distributed among the applicants,” demanded Dewan. “The corrupt DDA should immediately be done away with, as it is the major cause for chaos in Delhi, including sealing, encroachments and scams,” he added. “The DDA and the banks have earned interest worth crores. The only losers are the applicants, who have been taken for a ride. Apart from the cancellation of the rigged draw, the DDA and banks should also give an interest of 8% to applicants,” said Madan Gopal Minotra, another applicant. Meanwhile, the DDA Housing Scheme-2008 Allottees’ Association has demanded justice for genuine candidates and the early possession of flats. The Association has decided to protest outside the DDA headquarters tomorrow. The Association members argued that they had applied through genuine papers. They appealed to the union urban development ministry not to penalise them for misdeeds of others. |
Minorities seek free land for graveyards, burial grounds
New Delhi, January 11 Chairman of the DMC, Kamal Faruqui, in a meeting held today, said that the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) recently allotted land to Christian community at Sabhapur village for which it demanded money, which was not justified. In a resolution passed in the meeting, the DMC said that it was the responsibility of the state government to provide free-of-cost burial grounds or crematorium to all communities. The commission also explored the possibility of conducting lok adalats with help from the Delhi Legal Service Authorities for minorities against whom cases are pending under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) or CrPC. The chairman said that after the problem of lack of basic facilities like drinking water, electrification in class rooms, sanitation and repair and maintenance at Zeenat Mahal Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, was brought to the notice of the directorate of education, these facilities were made available. Talking about the slaughterhouse, Faruqui said that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi had constructed the slaughter house in Ghazipur, but it did not have basic amenities. Requirement of meat in Delhi is 12,000 goats, but the capacity of the slaughter house is only 5,000 goats, consequently illegal slaughtering is being done in various areas of the Capital. He added that if the capacity of the slaughter house was increased, Delhiites would be able to get meat of good quality. Faruqi further added that the slaughter house had no canteen, no green room for workers and no place for animals. He said that the commission members would discus the issue with the municipal commissioner and senior leaders of the MCD. The commission has also decided to introduce computer literacy programme for imams and caretakers of the mosques, bhais in gurdwaras, father or priests in churches, Buddhists and Jains. This programe will be conducted through NGOs associated with the Delhi Minorities Commission. |
My party is original ‘janhit’, claims ex-minister Punia
Gurgaon, January 11 Replying to a specific query while addressing a press conference here today, Dr Punia asserted that he had formed the Janhit Morcha in 1989 and Janhit Sewa Sangathan in 1993. “Our Janhit Morcha was even registered as a political party and we contested the 1996 poll on its behalf,” the former minister said, adding that their Janhit Morcha had now been renamed and registered with the Central Election Commission as Rashtriya Janhit Party. “Moreover, we have also been bringing out a fortnightly named Janhit Rakshak,” he maintained. A joint Punjab-cadre IAS officer of the 1964 batch, Dr Punia served as the transport commissioner of Haryana before he quit his job to join politics. “It was the late Ch Devi Lal who goaded me to enter politics,” said the administrator-turned-legislator, who also remained a minister in Devi Lal’s Cabinet. Dr Punia said he had formed a new party as he thought that no political party had taken worthwhile measures towards poverty alleviation, which, he said, was must to strengthen a democratic set-up. Unveiling his party’s five-point agenda, the former minister said providing jobs to all educated and unemployed youth, ensuring a regular source of income for the daily-wagers and other small-time labourers, wheat at Rs 2 per kg for the poor, 18-hour power supply and good law and order situation were on his priority list. On being asked about his magical formula to end unemployment, he maintained that he had carried out a detailed research in this regard and turning of huge chunks of barren land into fertile land was part of his plan. In response to another question, Dr Punia said his party would be open to alliance with any party which supported its agenda. |

Panchayat against ‘police atrocities’
Nuh, January 11 It is to be mentioned that a police team of 40-50 members led by ACP Krishan Murari had entered historical Jama Masjid in Gurgaon on the night of December 23, 2008 and had beaten up and detained for a night 150 odd persons. Another police team of 200 members led by CIA inspector Sunil Kadiyan had entered village Alawalpur last week claiming that they were searching for a stolen truck. Villagers alleged that the police had beaten innocent elderly women and children. It was unanimously decided that a maha panchayat would be organised on January 21. The villagers have given ultimatum to the Congress government till then and have asked to suspend ACP Krishan Murari and CIA inspector Sunil Kadian and register a criminal case against guilty police officials responsible for beating poor persons at Jama Masjid and village Alawalpur. It also demanded that SSP Mewat should be transferred and compensation should be given to victims and the money of labourers of Jama Masjid should be returned. “In case government doesn’t meet our demands by January 20, then a Maha Panchayat would be organised and it will include people of all communities from Gurgaon and Mewat. Invitations would be exclusively send to all communities of Mewat spreading in Rajasthan, UP, MP and Delhi,” mentioned Hussain. “This time the panchayat didn’t include Congress leaders and they are keeping a far distance from the panchayat organised at Yasin Meo Degree College,” he added. A Congress leader, on the condition of anonymity, said that top Congress leaders in Haryana government had asked its leaders to refrain from criticizing police action. The move of political leaders not attending the panchayat was severely criticized in the panchayat. INLD MP Ajay Chautala has also criticized the Haryana Police for Alawalpur brutality. A police officer, on the condition of anonymity, said that certain police officers help finance companies goons to recover vehicles whose payments have not been made. However, such a practice has been banned by the court and it had strictly ordered the police to register FIR if any company uses muscle power to recover debts. Villagers alleged that CIA inspector Sunil Kadian’s police raid is a result of police and vehicle recovery mafia nexus. |
Sheeba killers still at
large
Noida, January 11 Sheeba Thomas was murdered here on the midnight of April 8 last year. It can be recalled that an hour later, the same assailants had tried to kill retired Lt General T.J.S. Gill in Sector-44 here. However, within a fortnight that the sensational murder took place, the Noida police had claimed to have got hold of the four accused persons. On April 15, 2008, the Noida police had claimed that Lachhi Yadav of Sarfabad had committed the crimes with his three friends. Lachhi Yadav had surrendered in court due to the police’s pressure. Later, on April 19, Mukesh alias Sukhiya was arrested. The police claimed that Mukesh had committed the crimes on the night of April 8, 2008. At that time the police’s claims were doubted. However, according to Anil Sumaniya, SHO, Sector-39 police Kotwali, a charge sheet in the case has been filed. Meanwhile, retired Lt General T.J.S. Gill, who was wounded by the assailants, has also questioned the Noida police. “The Noida police has not yet identified the accused involved in the crime,” he said. Gill added if confronted he would identify one of the four criminals involved in Sheeba’s murder. The fact that the police has failed to identify the accused has made the probe suspicious. The actual criminals may still be out of the police net. Besides, the police has also not been able to find Sheeba’s cell phone and car keys. It may be recalled that five crimes had taken place, one after the other, on the night of April 8, 2008. In the first crime, some bike-borne persons had shot Sheeba Thomas as she came out of her car and argued with them in Sector-32 here. They then fled away with car keys and cell phone. After around an hour, they tried to rob Lt General T.J.S. Gill of his car in Sector-44 here. When Gill resisted, they pumped three bullets into his stomach. As the brave General resisted the criminals with determination and courage, they sped away after wounding him grievously. |
Food prices not hit by truckers’ strike
New Delhi, January 11 The supply of fruits and vegetables from neighbouring towns has helped the prices remain under control in Delhi. While the prices have been affected to some extent in other parts of the country, Delhiites can take a sigh of relief. Secretary of Azadpur fruit market, Raj Kumar Bhatia, said, “The prices of fruits and vegetables have not shot in the mandi because most items come from neighbouring areas. Moreover, the strike basically involves big transporters. Therefore, the local market has hardly been affected.” About changes in the prices of essential products, he said that they were ‘minor’ and were due to local factors. They had nothing to do with the strike, he claimed. Besides, Bhatia explained that most fruits during this season came from storage. Most fruits are being supplied from Kashmir, Ganganagar in Rajasthan and Punjab. Grapes come from Maharashtra, guava from Uttar Pradesh and mousmi from Andhra Pradesh. Their inflow and outflow is good and has not been affected. Meanwhile, taking advantage of the strike, local vendors are seen hiking the prices of fruits and vegetables in some areas of the city. Residents are worried, though there has been no price hike in the local mandi. “We have not increased the price on any vegetable. If vendors are selling them at higher rates, they are just taking advantage of the situation,” said Umesh, a wholesale dealer of vegetables in Azadpur Mandi. The source of winter vegetables (capsicum, brinjal, cauliflower, spinach, potato, and cabbage) is within 200 km from the border of the national Capital. This makes the transportation of these commodities easier, confirmed Raj Kumar. Only ladyfinger and bitter gourd, transported from Calcutta, have noticed price hike, as their inflow has been slow. While vegetables coming from Karnal, Bulandshehar, Alwar, Meerut, Jaipur, Tonk and Sonipat have noticed no change in prices. The price of onion that comes from Rajasthan and Nasik has shot to Rs 26/kg from Rs 18/kg due to poor harvesting of the crop, he added. |

District administration will ensure that all necessary identification cards are also issued to the disabled persons to enable them to avail of certain concessions in travel and education. The movement for welfare of the handicapped children, primarily the spastic children, has been spearheaded by the Spastic Society of Gurgaon. The president of Spastic Society of Gurgaon, Rajesh Bhola stated that the step proposed to be taken by the district administration will be a big leap forward and will help in a big way in amelioration of the lot of the disabled and will improve their general health condition and quality of life. |
LS poll: Cong promises development
New Delhi, January 11 It can be recalled that Sonia Gandhi’s first rally was organised in the same area during the assembly elections. Addressing the rally, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said that the Congress was the party of masses and it believed in development. It has come to power for the third consecutive term in the national Capital on the basis of its works. During its 10 years’ rule, the party had changed the face of Delhi. With the Metro services and modern low-floor buses, public transport system in Delhi has been improved. Low-cost flats are being constructed for labourers. High-rise buildings would be constructed for slum dwellers, she said. While Congress general secretary Mohsina Kidwai said that the Congress was the only party that cared for all. The impressive assembly results indicate that all parliamentary seats in Delhi would go to the Congress, she grinned. She appealed to voters to exercise their franchise in favour of the Congress. The country would benefit the nuclear deal signed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, she added. MP Deepender Hooda said that people of Delhi believed in development and that was why they had voted the Congress to power. When the BJP-led NDA government was at the centre no development work had been carried out. |
