Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, president of the Lok Bhalai Party (LBP), has said the Congress on its own will not be able to win the Lok Sabha elections in Punjab. He says the BKU ( Lakhowal)-backed National Democratic Alliance ( NDA), comprising the SAD and the BJP, was a major force in Punjab and to defeat it the Congress will have to tie up with Left parties, the Bahujan Samaj Morcha and other political outfits having substantial vote bank across the state.
50% cut in VAT on fuel hike withdrawn

The Punjab government has withdrawn 50 per cent reduction in levy of VAT (Value Added Tax) on the hike in prices of petrol, diesel and LPG. This 50 per cent cut in VAT was imposed in July this year, after the Centre increased the fuel prices.
CM cancels transfers of 840 border cops

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has said all transfers of policemen from border districts to other districts made recently have been cancelled. He has issued necessary instructions in this connection to director-general of Punjab police N.P.S. Aulakh.
