The parents, in the written joint statement submitted to the magistrate, had demanded that A.D. Rahman clinches Haryana Open title
Donald Banerjee

Chandigarh, November 29
Mohd Siddikur Rahman of Bangladesh recorded his second win in the PGTI Tour when he fired a one under par 71 to clinch the Rs 20 lakh HUDA-GTPL-Unitech Haryana Open title at five under par 283, with Ajeetesh Sandhu of Chandigarh breathing down his neck finishing one stroke behind on the par 72 greens of the Panchkula Golf Club today.

So close was the competition that four golfers - Vikrant Chopra, Ajeetesh Sandhu, C. Muniyappa and Rahul Ganapathy - finished tied second just one stroke behind Siddikur Rahman.

Rahul Ganapathy came very near to clinching the title. But his double bogey on the 18th saw him finish tied second.

But it was Ajeetesh Sandhu who got his grooming at the David Leadbetter Academy and turned 20 on October 9, who came very near to topping the leaderboard along with Rahman. Ajeetesh came into contention with birdies on the 16th and 17th. But he had no idea that he was five under with just one hole to go.

The back-to-back birdies had energised the young city golfer. In his effort to sink another birdie, Ajeetesh made an attacking drive on the par-four 18th. The ball landed in the undergrowth on the left. His drive saw the ball landing on the fairways. He chipped the ball to the greens. His par putt saw the ball rolling very near to the pin. The resultant putt saw hime finish with a bogey, one stroke behind the leader.

Ajeetesh sank two birdies and conceded a bogey for a one under 35 at the turn. The back nine saw him firing three birdies and conceding two bogeys for a two under par 70 card.

“I never knew I was so close. But now that I have had a feel of the competition I am going to go all out at the PGTI Tour event at Jamshedpur,” said Ajeetesh, who was all praise for the Panchkula golf course. He pocketed a prize money of Rs 1,32,800.

The 24-year-old Bangladesh golfer, thus registered his second win and managed to jump from 16th to 12th on the PGTI Order of Merit.

Siddikur (73, 70, 69, 71), who won his first PGTI event at Pune in September this year, began with a birdie on the first to become the sole leader. Ganapathy then overtook him on the sixth hole. Rahman dropped further back when he bogeyed the seventh, where he missed a three feet putt for par. The Bangladesh golfer made up some ground by sinking a birdie on the eighth. His third shot from 50 yards out on the eighth landed 6 inches short of the pin. Rahman then had a birdie-bogey on the 15th and 16th. He finally held his nerve on the 18th by making par to come home the winner by one stroke even as Ganapathy dropped three shots on the last two holes.

Rahman said, "It feels great to win my second title on the PGTI. I had planned to play my normal game during the fourth round, just like I had done in round three. I think my win in Pune helped me grow in confidence. This win will now spur me on to achieve greater heights."

He added, "The birdie on the eighth was particularly satisfying as my third shot just came up 6 inches short of the pin. The only blemish of the day was the three-putt from 15 feet on the 16th."

Rahul Ganapathy (68, 74, 70, 72) made birdies on the fifth and sixth to become the sole leader. He further consolidated on his lead with two more birdies on the 11th and 12th. Ganapathy held onto the lead till the 17th despite dropping bogeys on the 14th and 17th. However, the double bogey on the 18th pushed him into tied second place.

“I gave it away because of bad shots on the 14th, 17th and 18th. I started well and had the momentum going into the back nine but then found the bunker on the 14th from the centre of the fairway. On the 17th I hit a poor 8-iron tee shot and on the 18th my drive went out of bounds," said Ganapathy, who had the title for the taking till the 17th.

Gaganjeet Bhullar and Vivek Bhandari were a further stroke behind in tied sixth.

Mukesh Kumar and the Chandigarh duo of Gurbaaz Mann and Randhir Singh Ghotra finished tied ninth at one under 287. Chandigarh's Harendra Gupta was tied 12th at even par 288.

Final scores
