Remove garbage, insist angry councillors
Jotirmay Thapliyal Tribune News Service
Dehradun, November 11 Leader of the opposition and senior councillor Ashok Varma took strong exception to the poor sanitation arrangements in the city. He said it was becoming increasingly difficult for the councillors to face the public in their respective wards, as sanitation conditions were going from bad to worse. The issue of outsourcing of sanitation works in some of the big wards also came up for discussion on the mayor’s suggestion. But the house gave a divided opinion on the issue. While councillors like Uday Singh Chandel strongly supported outsourcing, others like Arun Valmiki, Amita Singh and Babita Sahrotra said such a step would only encourage the contractor system. The suggestion for purchase of night sweeping machines was also taken up for deliberation. While few of the councillors welcomed such an initiative, some including Govind questioned its appropriateness. He referred to the Lift Bag machines pointing out that they had failed to deliver results as the MC staff lacked the requisite expertise. He added that the night sweeping machines would meet the same fate. Councillors Dr Vijendra Pal and Sanjay said there were very few sanitary employees in their wards, which have made things worse. Some of the councillors also demanded creation of more sanitation committees to deal with staff shortage. Notably, there are a total of 862 sanitary employees, including contractual and daily wagers, who are working in various capacities. The board also passed a proposal for purchase of 500 new rickshaws for ensuring proper transportation of garbage. However, some of the councillors raised reservations on this too. Some of the councillors also claimed that garbage from other wards was being dumped into the bins put up in their wards leading to more problems. Earlier, as soon as the house assembled, the councillors welcomed 10 new nominated members. The issue of convening a collective meeting of all the elected members of local bodies linked to 75th Amendment was also decided during the meeting. The lack of coordination between the supervisor and councillors also came to the fore and the mayor had to seek clarifications regarding ward-wise assessment of deployed sanitary workers. Meanwhile, members of the Local Bus Stand Market Welfare Committee, Rajpur road, staged a protest outside the corporation and sought the removal of heaps of garbages from the bus stand market area. Anant Akash led the protest. |

CPI to gherao Khanduri
Raju William Tribune News Service
Dehradun, November 11 As per the action plan disclosed by the party’s state unit secretary Samar Bhandari, the CPI workers would gherao the CM on November 14 at Gauchar in Rudarprayag district where he is slated to inaugurate the 10-day famous cultural mela of Garhwal region.
“We demand that the CM should declare Gairsain as the state capital without any delay as this was one of the main issues during the statehood movement,” he said. The party would also organise demonstrations at the district headquarters to mobilise public support on the issue. As part of this, a protest would be held at Dehradun tomorrow. Bhandari claimed that they were getting statewide support on the issue. A common protest plan would be announced by the end of this month in consultation with the Left parties, including CPM and CPI (ML). Besides, the plan would include issues related to displacement of people due to big hydro-electricity projects, unemployment, and strengthening of public distribution system. On the Gairsain issue, Bhandari accused the Khanduri government of indulging in delaying tactics, which indicated a lack of sincerity towards fundamental issues and interests for which Uttarakhand was created. “Earlier the government tried to prolong any decision by giving several extensions to the Dikshit Commission formed for the purpose. Now it is inexplicably shying away from making the commission’s report public,” Bhandari alleged. |

Doctors’ strike hurts patients
Neena Sharma Tribune News Service
Dehradun, November 11 At a meeting with the health minister yesterday, the Prantiya Chikitsa Evam Swasthaya Sewa Sangh members were assured that they would get pay scales equal to those in the neighbouring states. “So far nothing concrete has come our way, only verbal assurances have also been given by the principal secretary, health, K.D. Raju,” said Dr D.P. Joshi, general secretary of the Sangh. He added that the state government’s step-motherly treatment is detrimental to the interest of doctors, who work under adverse conditions. The state government has approved the implementation of the Sixth Pay Commissions recommendations but is not ready to pay better scales to them, he said. “The present struggle is not only for 25% NPA, but addresses a wider range of issue including provision of quality medical care to people of the state,” said Dr V.S. Tolia from the Doon Hospital. Meanwhile, the stir has caused a lot of inconvenience to patients coming here from far off places as the doctors manage to give only two hours at the OPD. “We are not carrying out a complete boycott of the OPD simply because patients’ cases have to be taken up,” added Dr Joshi. |

Celebrity couple charms Haridwar
Haridwar, November 11 Varun has acted in several teleserials like “Desh Mey Nikla Hoga Chand”, “ Ek Chaabi Hai Pados
Mey”, “ Astitva” , ”Koshish” , “ Ek Asha” to name a few. Rajeshwari is a renowned singer and actress. Her two solo albums titled
'Hulle Hullare' in 1999 and “ Mukhda Piya Ka” in 2001 hit the charts. But she rose to fame when anchoring “Antakshari” on Zee TV and with her award-winning performances in art films like “ Sardari Begum ” and “ Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose”. Many were surprised when Varun Badola told the audience that he was a native. "I was born in Kotdwara and the best memories I have are from there. I speak Garhwali fluently though I have spent more than 20 years in Allahabad, Delhi and am now in Mumbai." His wife Rajeshwari, a Punjabi, welcomed the people in Garhwali and the crowd went hysterical. "Our culture, the way people live together peacefully irrespective of caste, religion and faith is commendable as compared with other states", said Varun. On his days as a struggler, Varun said: "It was quite a tough time from playing extra to being a costume coordinator in a
teleserial. But I had confidence in my abilities and with a break in “Astitva”, I got instant success and recognition". Varun had also worked as an assistant with renowned director Tigmanshu Dhulia of
“Haasil”. Rajeshwari has recently earned acclaim for her stellar performance in Shyam Benegal's “ Welcome to
Sajjanpur” "Shyam Benegal is an institute in himself and I learned so much from his style of cinema," she said. Being one of Benegal's favourite actresses, Rajeshwari attributes her success to the theatre experience. She feels one needs to act with open mind as viewers are exposed to national and international cinema much more, so an artist has to bring something new each time. On how they met, said Rajeshwari: ” We met the first time on the sets of Antaakshari and acted together in a
telefilm. We fell in love and got married on May 12, 2004." And when both were asked about
“Nach-Baliye”, they replied: "We were first runners-up and the popularity the show brought us is difficult to imagine.” On future projects, both want to work in teleserials with fresh ideas. They plan more films too. |

Dehradun, November 11 In his address, Karnad further said, “In the long run, nuclear upgradation turns out to be cheaper than repeated modernisation of the conventional military capability as this is a must to ensure India's national security. Therefore, further testing is a must for building a credible minimum deterrent.” Karnad also stressed the need to achieve thermonuclear capability and emphasised that India cannot ignore the very adverse strategic scenario that is emerging in southern Asia and the Indian Ocean region. “India has to deal not only with its conventional adversaries but also be prepared to take on such future oppositions if it comes its way,” he said. No parking space at Doon’s nerve centre
Dehradun, November 11 The case in point is the city’s nerve centre that houses the courts, collectorate office, SSP’s office, state consumer forum etc, and is flanked by Katcheri Road, Haridwar Road and MKP girls college. The place has literally no parking space and residents who come here for work have to face a lot of problems. “I was denied parking as there was no space,” said Rajinder Singh of Vasant Vihar, who had here come to collect a certificate for his brother. Under such circumstances, visitors have no option but to park their vehicles on the Kacheri Road. However, this stretch from Doon Hospital up to Hardwar Road is a no parking zone. Even cops find it difficult to handle the situation. “After all how many vehicles can be towed away,” said a traffic cop on duty here. As per rough estimates, around 4,000 litigants visit the courts daily in addition to the 2,000 lawyers and 3,000 allied staff, including stamp vendors, typists, munshis and document writers. The rush of visitors to the ADM’s, SDM’s and sub-registrar’s offices and the District Cooperative Bank, housed inside the complex, adds to the problem. “The authorities should soon take measures to decongest the area as it could pose a security threat as well,” observed Yeshpal Singh Rawat, an advocate. However, the present situation has become a boon for private contractors who run the parking lots here. People have to dish out Rs 10 for a car and Rs 5 for parking a two-wheeler here, whereas the charges are Rs 5 and Rs 3 in the parking lots managed by the municipal corporation in other parts of the city. |
