Agriculture society secy accused of fraud
Bassi Pathana, November 9 The members have alleged that the then society’s assistant registrar in his report submitted to the authorities has indicted the secretary of committing fraud in bank loan transactions and diverting the funds for unknown purposes, resulting a huge loss to the society members. Members said instead of taking action against the erring secretary, the present assistant registrar had constituted a committee of three inspectors to re-look into the inquiry conducted by the previous A.R. just to hush up the matter. They said Gurdeep Singh had been working as secretary of the society since 1985 whereas the members had been suffering huge losses and the secretary became the owner of property worth crores of rupees. They further said the other societies were earning profit, while their society was running under a loss of Rs 4.75 lakh. The fraud was detected, when certain members, who did not take the loan, got notices to deposit it and others whose loan amount was mentioned more than the actual. Hence, they lodged a complaint with Capt. Kanwaljit Singh minister for cooperation and registrar cooperative societies. On their recommendations, the then assistant registrar conducted an inquiry and submitted the report to joint Taranjit Singh Walia, assistant registrar, Bassi Pathana, said the then assistant registrar had constituted a committee to verify the facts. He said it would be an audit type inquiry and then the report would be sent to the higher officials for further action accordingly. |

Expert focuses on national security

Martyrs remembered
Ambala, November 9 He said the communities who do not remember their martyrs could not survive. He stressed that there was no comparison on this earth to the supreme sacrifice of Bhai Mati Dass 333 years ago on this date. He said the youth must get inspiration from our ancestors like ‘Bhai ji’. It was a matter of great regret that for personal gains some selfish elements were trying to divide the country by invoking the thoughts of regionalism among the masses, he added. Potable water govt’s priority: Minister
Patiala, November 9 Brahmpura was speaking at a cattle fair organised by his department. The fair is being organised in collaboration with the district administration of five districts. He asserted that cattle were a big source of income for farmers and it was the duty of the government to encourage policies relating to animal husbandry. He urged officials of the animal husbandry department to hold such fairs on a regular basis so that there was a continuous in Brahmpura said the dairy farming should also be encouraged in a big way as it was also a big source of income for the farmers of the state. To a query, Brahmpura said the government was committed to the development of villages in the state. He further added that the government was taken on priority basis work pertaining to provide clean drinking water, proper sewerage and sanitation facilities in the villages. He also said to provide proper development to the villages, training camps would be held regularly for the benefit of sarpanches and panches so that they could work in a better way to implement the policies of the Punjab government. 10,000 cases disposed of at traffic lok adalat
Chandigarh, November 9 The courts disposed of 10,000 cases of traffic challan wherein a fine of Rs 8,27,000 was imposed on defaulters. Judicial officers and court staff worked for third consecutive Sunday as part of “Samadhan-2008” — a mega lok adalat. The district courts authorities had decided to work regularly on Sundays. The next mega lok adalat will be organised on December 20 and 21 when cases under different Sections and matrimony disputes would be taken up. Sources said the aim was to reduce pendency of cases in courts to provide relief to litigants. Apart from deciding traffic challans, a pre-lok adalat will be organised on December 6 wherein cheque bounce cases will be taken up. |

Minor held in stabbing case
Chandigarh, November 9 According to police sources, the victim, Dharamvir of Bhaskar Colony, sustained multiple stab wounds in the assault. He was attacked by a group of seven youngsters belonging to a rival group at 11 pm, when he was on his way home from Sector 24 police post. He sustained deep stab wounds on the head, thighs and other parts of the body. He was taken to the PGI where his condition was said to be critical. The police said the doctors had not declared the victim fit to record his statement and a police officer would go to the hospital late this evening to record the victim’s statement. The police said Dharamvir’s father and brothers had clashed with Jai Bhagwan of the colony earlier in the evening. The clash involved use of sharp-edged weapons and batons. The police took both sides to the police post and initiated proceedings in this connection. Dharamvir reached there to enquire into the matter. He was assaulted when he was returning home after meeting his father and brothers. Some youngsters belonging to the other group pounced on him to take revenge and injured him. The police said a case of rioting, causing injuries, criminal intimidation and common intension had been registered against the accused. The police has arrested a 17-year-old boy in the case, while efforts were on to nab his accomplices. |

The police registered a case on the complaint filed by Manoj Sharma, a resident of Sector 27, alleging that Jai Singh of UP has stolen his cash Rs 90,000 and gold ornaments from his residence during the intervening night of November 7-8. A case under Section 381 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 26 police station. In another case, Priyanka Chaudhry, a resident of Panchkula, filed a complaint with the police alleging that her bag containing some important documents was lost from her car that was parked at Sector 26 yesterday. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 26 police station.

Chandigarh, November 9 St Anne’s School routed St Stephen’s School, Togan, by nine wickets and St Kabir defeated Shishu Niketan School-22 by 19 runs in the quarter-final matches played today. St Stephen’s School of Togan batted first and made 150 for 6 in allotted 30 overs. Opener Daksh Aggarwal carried his bat through the innings with an unbeaten 50. It was his second successive half-century in the tournament. Lovjeet (24) and Prakashit Rana (10) were their other main scorers. TP Singh (3 for 26) and Shivadeep (2 for 33) were the most successful bowlers for St Anne’s School. St Anne’s School achieved its target in 20 overs by scoring 152 for 1. Anirudh (65) and Pukhraj Singh (40) were associated in a 125-run partnership for the opening wicket stand. Shivadeep remained not out on 25. The back nine saw him bogeying the 12th, 15th and 17th with a lone birdie on the 16th for a two over 38 back nine and a third round card of two over par 74 to occupy to joint 26th spot. Mohali, November 9 The festival concluded at the Dussehra ground in Phase 8 here today. A cash award of Rs 51,000 was given to the academy. In the rural sport event organised by the Sukhdev Singh Gill Memorial Welfare Club, Mohali, atleast eight teams from Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh participated. Phool Raj, president of the club, said in the kabaddi contest, the second cash prize of RS 41,000 was bagged by Dasmesh Kabaddi Academy,
Ludhiana. Baidwan Sports Academy, Mauli Baidwan and Harjeet Talwar Club, Jagraon, shared the third position, having a cash prize of Rs 31,000. NPS cagers in line for double title
Chandigarh, November 9 The NPS boys outpointed Police DAV Public School of Amritsar by 76-54 in the semi-final played in the evening session. NPS trio of Sartaj (20), Parveen (20) and Balraj (15) worked as a team to fashion their creditable victory. NPS set up a title clash with Budha Dal Public School who overcame Yadvindra Public School of Patiala by 86-69 in the second semi-final. Antar top-scored with 40 points. Simranjit (22) gave him full support. The main scorers for YPS were Wasim (32) and Amninder (11). In the girls’ section, NPS will meet Government Senior Secondary School of Giddarbha in the final.
