Cops return Rs 85,000 lying in unlocked car

Setting an example, two constables of the Chandigarh Police returned Rs 85,000 that they found lying in an unlocked car parked in the Sector 17 here this afternoon. They policemen were on a special checking drive.

Harman Sidhu Road safety hardly a priority with govts

Instilling road safety among children seems to be the last thing on the mind of the authorities. This is apparent as no state government has expressed interest in buying a book on road safety even though the union ministry has said the book is “useful for children”. The book, “Your Child’s Road Safety Handbook”, has been authored by Harman Sidhu, who was incapacitated in an accident 13 years ago. Published in December, the book was released by the UT administrator and lauded by Kiran Bedi and road safety expert H. Kishie Singh, among others.

2 killed, 1 hurt in Panchkula mishap
Panchkula, October 27
Two people were killed and another injured when a truck driver lost control over the vehicle reportedly when one of its tyres busted at the Panchkula-Barwala road here today. The deceased have been identified as Mukesh and Lalit of Madanpur. The injured, Kamlesh, father of Lalit, was admitted at Panchkula General Hospital.

Mohali Bar meets to speed up process

The District Bar Association today held a meeting here to chalk out a strategy to speed the process of setting up the new judicial complex.In a meeting chaired by president of the District Bar Association Manjit Singh Chauhan, it was decided that the district administration and the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) would be asked to give possession of the land at the earliest so that construction of the district administrative complex and the judicial complex could commence at the earliest.

Bloody brawl at tavern
Youth stabs man with broken bottle; held 
Chandigarh, October 27
Infuriated over noise created by persons sitting in a tavern, who refused to budge despite repeated request, a youth repeatedly stabbed a man with a broken bottle. The injured was rushed to the PGI where his condition was said to be critical.

Purse containing gold jewellery stolen
Chandigarh, October 27
Bandana Sood, a resident of Sector 23, filed a complaint with the police alleging that her purse containing gold tops and Rs 800 was stolen from the Sector 22 market yesterday. A case under section 379 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 17 police station.
