Ropar Heritage Fest concludes
Ropar, October 27 The police had to disperse the crowd using mild force as many people had started entering premises without requisite passes. The cops and administration remained on tenterhooks due to overcrowding during the performance of Mann. The audience danced to the tune of songs ‘pind pehra lagda’, ‘kabza’ and ‘saun di jhari’. Punjabi singers from Ropar Bhupinder Gill and Neelam also enthralled the audience with their songs. Meanwhile, Government College, Ropar, won the first prize in various competitions held during the youth festival in the heritage fest. The college students were given a cash prize of Rs 7,000 and a trophy. Baba Zorawar Singh Fateh Singh College, Morinda, bagged the second position and was given Rs 5,000 cash while Amar Shaheed Baba Ajit Singh Jujhar Singh College, Bela, got the third position and was given a cash prize of Rs 3,000. In bhangra competition, Government College, Ropar, got the first position and Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College, Anandpur Sahib, stood second. In giddha competition, Amar Shaheed Baba Ajit Singh Jujhar Singh College, Bela, bagged first position and Baba Zorawar Singh Fateh Singh Khalsa College, Morinda, stood second. In solo dance competitions, Government College, Ropar, bagged the first position and IET, Bhaddal, got the second position. The dressing competition was won by Government College, Ropar, and Amar Shaheed Baba Ajit Singh Jujhar Singh College stood second. Hardev Singh from Government College, Ropar, was declared the best bhangra dancer and Satnam Kaur of IET, Bhaddal, was declared the best giddha dancer. The winners were awarded prizes by Ropar deputy commissioner B. Purushartha. Ropar cultural and tourism society had released a souvenir during the occasion. |

Patiala, October 27 The convener of the front, Dr Tara Singh Antal, highlighted the role of Dr Ahluwalia in the field of education and Sikh culture. He also thanked Ahluwalia also said the university would come up with new enterprising ideas and would not replicate the ideas of existing universities. Patiala, October 27 A meeting of the Adhyapak Dal, Punjab, Bhunerkheri block I and II, was held at Nehru Park under the presidentship of senior vice-president Amarjit Singh Nainkalan and vice-president Malkit Singh of the district unit here today. The meeting unanimously resolved and appealed to the Chief Minister, Punjab, Parkash Singh Badal, and the finance minister that accrued installment of DA of 7 per cent should be released in cash with effect from July 1, 2008, to its employees. |
New judicial complex
Mohali, October 27 The bar also thanked the deputy commissioner for accepting their demand to set up the complex in Sector 76 near Sohana village. “The approval of the Sector 76 site after scrapping of the proposed site at Sanetta village has come as a big relief to us,” said the president adding that there was a lot of opposition to the earlier site. The formal approval for the site has been granted in a recent meeting of the building plan approval committee of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The Sector 76 site is one of the several sites shown by GMADA and the district administration to the committee members. Meanwhile, the bar has decided to take up with the administration the issue of providing electricity connections to the lawyers at the temporary district court complex in Phase 3B 2. |

Bloody brawl at tavern
Chandigarh, October 27 According to the police, one Deepak was drinking in a tavern in Motor Market in Manimajra at around 5 pm. He was in a depressing mood and requested the persons sitting on table next to his not to make noise. On the other hand, the group did not pay heed to his requests. Infuriated, Deepak abused one Both the parties entered into a heated argument which turned violent, when Deepak slapped one of them, later identified as 22-year-old Taslim, a resident of Indira Colony. Taslim slapped back Deepak and they entered into a scuffle. Deepak caught hold of a beer bottle and smashed it on Taslim’s head. In the process, Deepak repeatedly stabbed Taslim in his stomach with the broken bottle. Taslim was rushed to the PGI. The police arrested Deepak of Mansa Devi Complex, Panchkula, on the charges of attempt to murder in this connection. |

Purse containing gold jewellery stolen
Chandigarh, October 27 In yet another case, Surjit Singh, a resident of Sector 20, filed a complaint with the police alleging that his scooter (CH-01-V-8339) was stolen from his house on October 20. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered at the police station of Sector 19. In a separate case, Vivek Suman, a resident of Sector 45, filed a complaint with the police alleging that Ashu, a resident of Burail, was caught red-handed while stealing his motorcycle (CH-03-L-3829) from his residence, yesterday. A case under Sections 379, 411 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 26 police station. |

Golf: Grewal, Shivali triumph
Chandigarh, October 27 For the first time, women golfers from Pakistan joined the Punjab team. Among them was top-ranked amateur Mehreen Raheel. “It is amazing. We are having a ball of a time,” said Mehreen, who plans to turn pro next year. However in the contest today, played on the stableford format, it was Shivali Aggarwal of Chandigarh who triumphed with 39 points. Just two points behind was Pauline J.M. Singh, also from Chandigarh. In the handicap 12 and below category, Lt-Col R.S. Grewal logged 41 points and tied with Jayant Pathak, who also had 41 points. But because of a better back nine, Grewal was declared the winner. The third slot went to H.S. Khara Dr Gopal Minjar, with 42 points, clinched the trophy in the 13-18 handicap category with Col Hanjra finishing just a point behind. One more point behind was Brig Sukhdev Singh with a 40 score. Khara hit the ball to a distance of 317 yards for the longest drive title, while Pakistan’s Salman Siddiqui was nearest to the pin on hole number 17. The clash between Punjab golfers of India and Pakistan will begin tomorrow at the Chandigarh Golf Club for the coveted PUNBAAB Cup. Pakistan are the holders of the title which they won in Lahore in 2006. In the inaugural year in 2005, the Indian Punjab team had clinched the title. Chandigarh, October 27 Jeev seemed all set to make it to the top 10, when he played a flawless first nine of four under par 32 with four birdies. But, he failed to keep up the pace on the return nine playing three birdies and conceding an equal number of bogeys to finish at four under par 67 on the final day. Chandigarh, October 27 Batting first APJ Kharar was bundled out for 85 in 22.1 overs in a 30-over semi-final encounter. Kapil and Rinderpreet played defiant knocks of 28 and 23 runs, respectively. Arjit and Charanjit restricted the APJ total with tight bowling. Arjit captured three wickets for 16 runs while Charanjit got three for 14. Chasing an easy victory target, Guru Nanak Public School CC Academy achieved it in 18 overs as they made 86 for 2. Abhishek and Gaurav flayed APJ Academy bowlers. Chandigarh, October 27 Singh had to sweat it out for two hours and 35 minutes in a three-set encounter. It was second seed Param Pun, who dominated the proceedings at the outset by clinching the first set 6-3. In the second set, Sumeet fought back to win the set 6-4. In the third and final set, both players held their serves till the score was level at 4-4. Sumeet played great backcourt tennis to clinch the final set as well as the championship. The final score read 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in favour of Sumeet Singh. In the boys’ under-12 age category final, second seed Abhijit Singh defeated third seed Param Pun in three-set encounter that lasted over two hours.
