PSEB engineers condemn police inaction
Patiala, October 3 Kuldeep Singh, secretary of the Patiala circle unit of the council, yesterday said two theft cases were detected near Sheranwala gate. The meters were removed and packed in the presence of the defaulters as per the board procedure. The copy of the checking reports were also handed over to them on September 24. Thereafter, the raiding party handed over the meters to the JE incharge of meters at the subdivision office. However, two miscreants came on a motorcycle and took away the meters from the JE’s room. The matter was reported to the division No. 4 police post the same day and an FIR was registered on September 26. Since the defaulters were still indulging in power theft, the board again approached the SHO to get the supply disconnected. Balwant Singh, head constable, was deputed to help the PSEB staff. When they reached the site, Dhanwant Singh along with some persons, allegedly obstructed them and did not allow them to disconnect the power supply. He also reportedly beat up the staff. Again the incident was reported to the police, but it is yet to take any action against the culprits. The council has urged the PSEB authorities to intervene in the matter. |

Admissions
Chandigarh, October 3 In all, the notices were issued to at least eight such students by a Bench of Justice Hemant Gupta and Justice Kanwaljit Singh Ahluwalia while taking up a petition filed by candidate Devanshi Sharma. Now, the candidates will now have to file replies before the High Court in support of the admissions granted to them. In an apparent attempt to avoid further delay in the matter, the Bench gave a short adjournment and fixed October 15 as the next date of hearing in the case. In her petition, Sharma had categorically stated that the instructions published in the "Handbook of information and rules for admissions in 2008," were not being complied with. Describing herself as a "korfball player", Sharma had sought directions to the varsity, university business school, dean, university instructions, and the sports director to follow the instructions while granting admissions under the sports quota in the MBA course. Going into the background of the matter, the petitioner said she appeared in the entrance examination for admission to the MBA course on November 18, 2007, and scored 71.25 percentile in the written examination. But instead of shortlisting first 64 candidates in accordance with the results of the CAT-2007, the list of all candidates appearing in the examinations was forwarded to Panjab University's sports director. Subsequently, the list of 26 candidates was shown under the sports category. The act of sending the names of all candidates, she claimed, was in violation of the rules, and
contrary to the information provided in the prospectus. Seeking directions to
the respondents against declaring the results, Sharma in an application placed along with the petition, argued that the varsity and others had given preference to those scoring less in CAT, but with sports gradation and ranking shown to be higher than her’s. |

Golf craze picking up
among youngsters
Chandigarh, October 3 Jessie Grewal, the region’s only Grade A golf coach, has his hands full. The golf range is full of youngsters and they are picking up the nuances of the game. Besides, he holds advanced camps for those, who have learnt the basics and are improving upon the sport. But this is not all. Even professionals, who come for a break from the Asian Tour take time off to seek Jessie’s advice on improving their drive, putting or pitching. Camps being held at the golf club are a virtual introduction to the game. These include correct posture, stance, alignment, aim and grip. And the young coach giving these tips is EGTF coach Ajay Gujral. With the number of youngsters wanting to take up golf going up, the club is planning to hold a five-day Dussehra junior golf camp for beginners from October 8 to 12. According to Gujral, the camp will be open to members as well as non-members in the 7-15 years age group and will be held on all five days from 4 pm to 5 pm. Each trainee will get a comprehensive golf manual, complimentary golf magazines and an EGTF certificate upon the completion of the camp. Gujral can be contacted at the club for registration. But Jessie Grewal feels the camps could bear fruit only if talented children are allowed the use of the course. “Some of the children do really well in pitch and putt or in driving, but the real test comes on a full course,” he says. He feels Chandigarh should have a facility like Lado Sarai in Delhi, which allows golfers to pay and play. The government golf club in Panchkula and the club coming up in Mohali could open their doors to tap talent. |
