Babla to take charge
: Recently elected council president Kulbhushan Malhotra Babla and vice-president Ravinder Rinku are likely to take charge officially on Monday. With this decision all speculations regarding re-election of office bearers came to an end.

Tributes paid
: Independence Day was celebrated at Arya Model High School. P.D.Goyal, president of the school committee, unfurled the national flag. School children enacted a play paying rich tributes to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the freedom struggle. They also organised a "Thalli" competition on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan in the school campus.

Assaulted: A person Jagseer was assaulted by four persons near Multania Phatak on Saturday. He was admitted to the civil hospital. The injured youth who works at a milk outlet in Moga said that while he was returning his milk tank, he was attacked by a rickshaw-puller and his accomplices with whom he had an altercation. They attacked him with iron pipes.

Elected: Balwinder Singh has been elected chairman of the Sahibzada Ajit Singh Welfare Club. Pratap Singh has been elected the vice-president while Harkirat Singh has been elected the general secretary. Jagjit Singh has been elected secretary, Indrajit Singh as cashier and Gurjit Singh as press secretary.

Dhanak Samaj: Chairman of the Punjab Pradesh Dhanak Samaj D.R. Bagri has appointed Makhan Singh Khanagwal as the chief general secretary. Earlier, he was the general secretary. He has been given the power to call meetings of general secretaries and the working committee and remove people inimical to social interests from their positions after warning them. But for this, he will have to seek the prior permision of the chairman. Acording to a press release issued here, Krishna Lal Nugaria and Baldev Krishna are have been appointed new office secretaries.

Shop raided
: Health officials raided Avtar Medical Store at Garhshankar on Saturday and seized a huge haul of prohibited drugs. Civil surgeon S.K. Gupta said the total seizure amounted to  Rs 1 lakh.

Bank celebrates foundation day
: Indian Bank celebrated its 101st foundation day at Jandi village, 10 km from here, by holding a camp wherein the bank officers dwelt on facilities available for the villagers. The bank had chosen Jandi for its development. Senior manger S.R. Singla said about 1,562 branches of the bank had been computerised and 602 ATMs opened.

Rakhi contest
: On the occasion of Rakhi, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Suranussi, organised a rakhi-making competition for students of primary and secondary wings on Saturday. The winners of the contest were awarded prizes by school principal G.S. Sethi.

Doctor honoured: Dr Ravi Verma, Punjab president of Helpline NGO, was awarded a commendation certificate at the district-level Independence Day function here on Friday. Dr Verma was honoured by Punjab irrigation minister Janmela Singh Sekhon.

Cheques distributed
: District education officer Prem Chand Gupta distributed cheques worth Rs 4.04 lakh among 43 primary and 27 upper primary schools for the development of infrastructure under the Sarv Shikhiya Abhiyan. Gupta exhorted the school heads to implement various schemes to impart quality education in the district.

50 donate blood: The Lions Club (Nawanshahr City) in collaboration with the Blood Donors Council(BDC) organised a blood donation camp, dedicated to Independence Day, in the BDC Complex here on Friday. As many as 50 units of blood were collected, club president Iqbal Singh said here on Saturday.

Hospital awarded
: Community Heath Centre (CHC), Kalka, has been selected as the best CHC in Panchkula district for its outstanding work in the field of heath and family welfare. The official sources of the hospital revealed that the district administration presented a certificate and a cheque of Rs 1 lakh as award to Dr S.K. Gupta, senior medical officer, Kalka, for the commendable work of the hospital in last couple of years. The award was presented during the celebrations of Independence Day at Panchkula.

REWARI
Girl killed in mishap
: A 12-year-old girl, Annu, daughter of Rajesh, was killed after she was reportedly hit by a car in Baldhan Klan village, 25 km from here, on Friday. The girl succumbed to her injuries in a hospital here. Irate over the incident, villagers blocked the road near the bus stand here on Saturday. The blockade, which lasted for over five hours, was lifted only after SDM Yogesh Bhardwaj assured them that a speed breaker would be constructed there soon. The police has arrested the car driver, Surrender Dagar, of Qutubpur Colony here for rash and negligent driving.

Youth electrocuted: A youth, Krishan Kumar (22), was electrocuted while reportedly repairing a defective transformer at Chhawwa village, near Kosli, on Friday. The youth fell down after receiving an electric shock and died instantly. The police after holding an inquest under Section 174 of the CrPC treated it as a case of accidental death.

MLA meets landslide-hit
: MLA Randhir Sharma on Saturday visited the regional hospital to meet bus passengers who were injured in a landslide near Sagirthin on Friday. He also met those injured in a house collapse at Devla Chhamb village in Harnoda area. He said that the best treatment available was being provided to the injured. The injured have been given a relief of Rs 10,000 by the district authorities. He said the administration had also provided relief to the five families of the Braham Pukhar area where villagers had lost their houses due to subsiding of soil.

Dhumal’s announcements welcomed
: President of the Nahan Nagrik Sabha Digvijay Gupta has welcomed the announcements made by Chief Minister P.K. Dhumal for Sirmaur. Addressing a press conference here, he said the CM had fulfilled several long-pending demands of the residents and they would reciprocate this gesture by extending full support to him on the every front.
