Cop stoned to death
Hunt on for mysterious woman
Chandigarh, August 2
Kashmir Singh, an inspector with the UT police, was found murdered in Dadumajra colony, here, early morning. The victim was bludgeoned to death. The incident came to light at about 5:45 am when a resident, Muna, found the body lying in a pool of blood in a street.

Merc mows down boy
Chandigarh, August 2
In yet another case of rash driving, a four-year-old boy lost his life when rashly-driven Mercedes hit him in front of his residence in Sector 28, here, this morning. The victim has been identified as Akshit Lakhpal.

Another four-year-old boy was allegedly sodomised by an 18-year-old labourer at the Amb Sahib Colony here this afternoon. The accused, Suraj, tried to commit suicide by consuming a poisonous substance when colony residents gheraoed his jhuggi.

A 14-year-old girl of Dashmesh Nagar was allegedly raped by a married man with the help of his friends. The accused Rakesh Kumar allegedly took the victim away while she was going to school.

Khehar takes over as acting Chief Justice
Chandigarh, August 2
Justice J.S. Khehar today took over as the acting Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He replaces Justice Vijender Jain, who has retired upon attaining the age of superannuation. The roster of the benches has also changed. The new roster will come into effect from August 4.

19 girls hurt as cab collides with mini truck
Ambala, August 2
As many as 19 girls were injured when a maxi cab they were travelling in collided with a mini truck on the Panjokhra-Lalru road near Ambala City today morning. The injured were admitted to the civil hospital in Ambala City. The driver of the maxi cab also sustained injuries.

Role in Gujarat blasts suspected

The police today nabbed a Pakistani national Sahid Iqbal Bhatti, who, was posing as a computer centre owner in the name of Dev Raj Sehgal. The police was not forthcoming on Bhatti and circumstances which, led to his arrest early in the morning from his Khalsa College Colony residence.

Youth falls from train, dies
Lalru, August 2
Deepak (23) died after falling from a moving train near Lalru, here, this morning. According to the railway police, Deepak, a resident of Ambala, worked with a private company in Chandigarh. He was travelling from Ambala to Chandigarh.

Nine-year-old boy electrocuted
Dera Bassi, August 2
Bablu (9) was electrocuted when he came into contact with high-tension wires while flying a kite on the roof of his house in Trivedi Camp here. According to sources, the victim accidentally touched the high-tension wires passing over his home.

Passport Scam
Prime suspect gives slip to police
Chandigarh, August 2
Gurjinder Singh Lucky, one of the prime suspects wanted by the Chandigarh police in the stolen passports case, gave a slip to the Kapurthala police yesterday afternoon. Lucky along with his mother, brother and an acquaintance assaulted the raiding policemen in broad daylight and fled from the spot, leaving the cops red-faced.

Man hangs himself to death
Chandigarh, August 2
Rakesh Kumar, a resident of Sector 37 here, ended his life today by allegedly hanging himself from the ceiling fan at his home this morning. The police, so far, has ruled out any foul play. However, it was yet to ascertain the reason behind the incident.

2 held for detaining septuagenarian couple; freed on bail
Panchkula, August 2
The police arrested two Sector-7 residents for allegedly detaining a septuagenarian couple in their home. The accused-Ajay Gupta and Bharti Gupta-were later released on bail by a local court.

2 girls rough up gym trainer

A trainer of a local gymnasium was “roughed up” by two girls today for reportedly passing comments at them this morning outside the gym in Sector 11.
