Taseer rules out Governor’s rule in Punjab
Afzal Khan writes from Islamabad

Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer has ruled out imposition of governor’s rule in Punjab on Wednesday saying that it is the policy of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) to support the coalition government in the province.

The governor visited Dubai to meet PPP co-chairman Asif Zardari amid reports that the PML-N- led coalition with PPP is well in jeopardy, particular on the question of restoration of deposed judges. The PML-N is also an exception to the decision for appointment of Taseer as governor and operation launched in the Khyber Agency. PML-N chief described it as a deflection from an agreed strategy to avoid use of force against tribal militants. Expressing reservations, Sharif said the coalition had decided to hold dialogue for peace deal with them.

The US has publicly denounced appointment of Tadeer as governor Punjab and expressed concern over launching of the operation without consulting PPP's allies.

“There is no question of imposing governor’s rule in the province and nothing of that sort is under consideration at any level. Our policy is to support the coalition,” Taseer said in an interview here.

He said it is the policy of the PPP to work for the strengthening of democracy and there is no ambiguity on the issue. For the future of local government system, he said the system would continue. The devolution of power is a basic component of the PPP’s manifesto because the local government system is essential for a strong democracy, Taseer said.

Taseer said the government would protect the current district government system to ensure that power was delegated to the lowest level.

Russia rebuffs US mediation in Georgia

Moscow, July 11
Russia will reject moves by the US to play a bigger role in defusing a standoff with Georgia, Interfax news agency today quoted a Russian diplomatic source as saying.

“We don’t see any reason for anyone’s mediation in settling relations,” the agency quoted the unidentified diplomatic source as saying. “We have direct dialogue with Georgia and contacts are continuing.”

US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, on a visit to Georgia on Thursday, called for a more intensive international effort to resolve a conflict over Georgia’s breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Both areas broke away from Tbilisi’s rule in wars in the 1990s. They have become the focus of escalating tension between Tbilisi and Moscow. Tbilisi recalled its Ambassador from Moscow on Thursday after Russia said it had sent fighter jets into Georgia’s airspace to prevent troops attacking South Ossetia, a tiny sliver of land in the Caucasus Mountains.

EU concerned over Iran missile tests

Paris, July 11
The EU raised concerns today over Iran’s announcement this week that it had conducted missile tests, and stepped up calls on Tehran to suspend uranium enrichment within its disputed nuclear programme.

“These missile tests can only reinforce the international community’s concerns,” the French presidency of the European Union said in a statement.

“The EU calls on Iran to finally react to the entire international community’s demands as expressed in (UN) Security Council resolutions to reach a negotiated solution on the nuclear issue,” it said of repeated calls for Iran to curb uranium enrichment.

The West fears the enrichment could lead to Iran acquiring the atom bomb — a goal Tehran denies. — Reuters
