Thermal plant siphons ash into wetland

Sri Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Power Plant is draining its ash and toxic waste into the international Ropar wetland. The siphon drain from Ghanauli runs over to Chak Dher village, carrying ash and empties it into the Sutlej, affecting the wetland.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has made it clear that reliance can be placed on the testimony of “relation witnesses”, unless they prove “unreliable” or have made an attempt to introduce false evidence to fix the accused.

HC issues notice

The 2007 election of Punjab’s former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, for the second consecutive term from Patiala Town constituency of Punjab Vidhan Sabha, has come under the judicial scanner. Justice Rajive Bhalla’s order, pronounced in an open court today, cleared the last hurdle in the hearing of the election petition filed by a voter, Sukhbeer Singh, in April last year.

Research, “Punjabi Khoj Sandharbh,” of Dr Dharam Singh, head, Department of School of Punjabi, Guru Nanak Dev University, which is yet to be released has revealed it. Dr Dharam Singh said when Ph.D was made mandatory for the post of principal, many aspirants approached ghost writers. “To retain their posts, many principals got theses written on ‘co-operative’ (many authors for one thesis) basis. Thereafter, such principals never contributed even single article”.
