Royals own the throne
Mumbai, June 1 Pathan, after helping Rajathan Royals restrict Chennai Super Kings to 163 for five, taking three for 22 in his four overs, returned to destroy Chennai with bat also, striking a 39-ball-56 with three fours and four sixes to take the Rajasthan Royals, whom nobody had given a chance at the start of the tournament, to victory in the DLF IPL. Set a target of 164 for victory, Rajasthan Royals opener Swapnil Asnodkar continued to impress, but the other opener Neeraj Patel could not cope with the pressure and was dismissed by Manpreet Gony, being clean bowled for 2. However, Asnodkar, the pocket sized dynamo from Goa, gave a flying start to Rajasthan Royals as he square cut Manpreet Gony for two consecutive boundaries and then smashed Ntini over the covers for another boundary. Kamran Akmal also got into the act flicking Ntini to the fine leg boundary for another four. However, Asnodkar after making 28 of 20 balls with five hits to the fence cut the first ball from Albie Morkel straight to point to be caught by Suresh Raina. One run later Kamran Akmal pushed the ball to mid-on and set of on a non-existent single. Ntini from mid-on was on target with the throw and ran Akmal out for 6 as Rajasthan Royals slumped to 42 for three. Watson was then joined by Yusuf Pathan and the two set about repairing the innings with a 65 runs partnership. Pathan was, however, lucky when Raina dropped him of Muralitharan when he was on 13 with the score being 75 for three. Earlier, Super Kings put into the bat were given a solid start by Vidyut and Parthiv Patel as the duo put on 39 runs in 5.2 overs. However, it was Patel who started the scoring for Super Kings with a flick to fine leg in the first over from Sohail Tanvir. North Sound, Antigua, June 1 Clarke's classy innings guided Australia to a commanding 479 for seven declared and he then halted a spirited reply from hosts by claiming the wickets of Xavier Marshall (53) and Runako Morton (2) as West Indies ended the day on 125 for three. The Australia vice-captain had missed the first Test victory in Kingston due to the death of his fiancee's father and he had not played cricket for over two months. Ricky Ponting's decision to declare was a positive move with the Australia skipper clearly wanting to get into the West Indies top order but on an easy track his team could have made plenty more runs with Brett Lee smashing an unbeaten 63 before Ponting called halt to the innings during tea. French Open
Paris, June 1 She will meet either Swiss 10th seed Patty Schnyder or Slovenia’s Katarina Srebotnik, seeded 27th, in the quarter-finals. Ivanovic did not take time to improve her tan on a sunsoaked Centre Court, wrapping it up in 54 minutes and leaving a resigned Cetkovska to look back at the two break points she had. Although the first rally suggested she could face a stern opponent, Ivanovic broke in the second game. Relying on her sharp forehand, the Serb took the opening set in 24 minutes and stayed focused in the second. It looked like Cetkovska would possibly win a game but Ivanovic showed no mercy, hammering her opponent with powerful, flat shots from the baseline. Cetkovska, who had not dropped a set in her first three matches here, managed a total of 30 points, 16 of them from Ivanovic’s unforced errors. The Australian Open runner-up will again be the favourite in her quarter-final match, having beaten Srebotnik in all their four meetings, including a straightforward win in Melbourne in the third round. She has lost four times to Schnyder but prevailed in their last three meetings, Jelena Jankovic overcame an injury scare and a stubborn opponent to reach the quarter-finals of the French Open on Sunday, beating Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska 6-3, 7-6. The Serbian third seed took a lengthy injury time-out to have her neck and shoulder manipulated by a tournament trainer while leading 6-3 2-1. Despite the discomfort Jankovic hung in for dear life in the second set, as the Pole stormed back from 5-1 down, and sealed victory on her fourth attempt when a net-charging Radwanska slapped a backhand long to lose the tiebreak 7-3. It was the second time in four days that Jankovic needed medical attention Paes crashes out

second best in serve and could not hold on their own in the rallies. On top
of that, they had double faults at crucial points. — Reuters |
Bangladesh tri-series
Karachi, June 1 ''The IPL is over for us and now I'm completely focused on the three-nation tournament in Bangladesh,'' Malik told reporters here yesterday. Malik, who was unable to impress much during his IPL stint for Delhi Daredevils, returned home from Mumbai to get ready for the Bangladesh triangular that also involves in-form India. Pakistan are scheduled to leave for Dhaka on June 5.
Malik has been under Many believed that Malik didn't deserve to be Pakistan captain saying that the 26-year old all-rounder's poor performance in the IPL is a clear proof that he is not good enough to lead the national team. Malik, however, downplayed all such criticism, saying that his morale was high in spite of a bad patch in the IPL. ''(In the IPL) I didn't get much opportunity. ''That is probably the reason behind my record (in the IPL). But it hasn't affected my morale and I'm looking forward to playing in the triangular tournament in Bangladesh,'' he said. Malik will be at the helm of Pakistan's campaign in Bangladesh which will host the tri-nation series from June 8-14 in Dhaka. — UNI |
Mumbai, June 1 Half of their batsmen returned to the pavilion at team total of 50 before folding at 112 for eight which the Chennai side chased down easily with 31 balls to spare and Yuvraj said their batting failed at a worst possible time having on the roll throughout. "We lost the main batsmen very quickly in the game, as a result we had no specialist batsmen left in the last 10 overs. This is our worst game in the tournament. It hit us hard as in Twenty20 you don't get time to recover," lamented Yuvraj at the post-match press conference. "It was a good wicket to bat on and a score 160 to 180 could have been easily scored. But we were reduced to 40 for 5 and by then we had lost the plot. "After losing too many early wickets while batting we had to take early wickets (in Chennai innings). That also did not happen. We had a bad game overall," he added. Yuvraj was, however, happy with the way the team had performed in the tournament.
"I am happy with the overall team performance in the tournament and it was a great experience playing with my teammates," he said.
Coach Tom Moody also rued that his side's batting failure came in the semifinal after doing so well in the league stage. "It was the first time to happen like this, top order failing so badly. Our batsmen stumbled. It was a bad one to stumble on, it happened in the semifinals," said the Australian. "We usually lose only one wicket in first six overs in the earlier matches we had played. But here, our top order failed collectively," Moody added. He said he would put his money on Rajasthan Royals to win the final match. "They (Rajasthan Royals) are the most consistent and difficult team to beat. They are on a roll at the moment, though I am not writing off Chennai," the Australian said. Moody said the two finalists could change the team composition after seeing the pitch at D Y Patil Stadium where the summit match will be held tomorrow. "It must be noted that the two sides will play on a pitch different from that of the semifinals. Both the sides may look to change their team composition depending on the pitch," he said.

T20 has globalised game: Tendulkar
New Delhi, June 1 "I don't personally feel that, you know, (IPL is) dumbing down the game. It's just another version of cricket," Tendulkar said. "Test cricket is there and then they started one-day cricket many years ago and one-day cricket has been a tremendous success and if the game is gonna get globalised in the form of IPL, then why not? It's better for cricket," he added in defence of the league that has been criticised for being too glamorous and money-centric. The veteran right-hander said despite playing the game for the past 19 years, he still gets child-like excited every time he steps out to bat in an international game, especially at his home ground - The Wankhede. "It's a special place. That is what I've dreamt of as a kid and then I'm living that dream and that's just fabulous. Every time I walk out, you hear the crowd going crazy, I mean it's just a special feeling.
