Peon’s daughter rides high

Shilpi Negi, daughter of a school peon, did the city proud by topping the state in humanities in the Class XII examination conducted by the Punjab School Education Board.
Shilpi is a student of BCM Senior Secondary School, where her mother works as a peon.
She scored 427 marks out of 450.

Insurance co. told to pay Rs 3.78 lakh

The insurance ombudsman from Chandigarh has asked officials of the United India Insurance Company to pay Rs 3.78 lakh to a city doctor on account of the theft of his car.

Death in Sewer Managers booked

The Focal Point police has booked two managers of safe engineering industry for their alleged negligence leading to the death of two persons while cleaning a sewer in the factory yesterday afternoon. Those booked have been identified as Kuldip Singh and Sukhdev Singh.

Labourer murdered
Ludhiana, June 1
A migrant labourer was found murdered in a vacant plot near Raghav Industries,
Giaspura, today morning. Narr Singh, a middle-aged labourer, was found dead with multiple stab wounds on his body at 9.30 am by a few factory workers.

Docs seek ban on genetic foods

More than 100 medical professionals called for an immediate ban on genetically modified crops or foods in India in light of its impact on human health. The doctors, who met at Wheat Auditorium of the Punjab Agricultural University today for a dialogue on “GM crops and health issues” expressed shock and dismay at the way in which the regulators were ignoring disastrous consequences of indiscriminate open air trials and expressed concern over genetic engineering in agriculture compromising food safety.
