PGI, technicians harden stance
Institute seeks to invoke ESMA

Patient care facilities were badly hit at the PGI as the strike by medical technologists entered the eighth day today. On the other hand, the technologists remained largely unconcerned to the problems and rather imposed new demands for joining the duty.

Reinstatement only on merit: K.K. Talwar
K.K. Talwar The PGI said regular employees would not be paid for the strike period while the contract of those on ad hoc not be reviewed if they went on strike. The PGI issued statement saying appeals were made to employees that they should not go on strike but the ad hoc employees never heeded.

Meanwhile, trees cut in Punjab Raj Bhawan

The Chandigarh Administration has a unique way of greening the city. It cuts and chops trees with impunity and instead concentrates more on growing grass than preserving trees. The latest example has been the prestigious Punjab Raj Bhavan where a large number of beautiful well-grown Ashoka trees have been brutally chopped.

This happens only in Chandigarh. The well-educated, well-heeled babu city cannot even start an environment campaign rightly. As part of the Earth Day celebrations, the Administration has issued windowpane stickers exhorting the public to “say no to polythene”. The stickers, however, are made of plastic.

In a surprise move, the Chandigarh police today removed dharnas of unemployed BEd teachers and government lecturers from outside the Sector 17 office of the Director Public Instructions (DPI) (Secondary) and shifted them to the Sector 25 rally ground.

Man jumps off PGI’s 3rd floor, hurt
Chandigarh, April 22
Fed up with the prolonged treatment of his daughter, a 50-year-old-man tried to end his life by jumping from the third floor at the PGI, here, this evening. He sustained severe head injuries and was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition.

Pelican’s Death
Zoo employee suspended
Zirakpur, April 22
The Chief Wildlife Warden, Punjab, has suspended an employee of the Chattbir Zoo for allegedly beating a rosy pelican to death. The incident took place last week. A zookeeper, in a fit of anger, beat up the bird with a stick.

Health dept goes soft on adulteration
Rajpura, April 22
Even as the local police have stepped up their drive against food adulteration, the district health department seems to have decided to go slow in this regard. The Rajpura police received a tip-off that a trader in the new grain market was storing spurious desi ghee following which a police team raided the premises at around 9 pm and seized more then 3,500 litres of ghee.

District magistrate B. Purushartha appointed returning officers on Tuesday for the forthcoming zila parishad and samiti elections. SDM Kavita Singh has been appointed RO for Ropar, SDM Shruti Singh for Chamkaur Sahib, SDM A.P.S. Sandhu for Anandpur Sahib, deputy registrar of cooperative societies Malkeet Singh for Morinda and national highway XEN Karnail Singh for Nurpur Bedi.

Cricket Stadium-16 team outclassed APJ, Kharar, team by 76 runs in today’s match of the 2nd CCA Under -13 Gold Cup Cricket Tournament held at Sector 16 here today. In a low profile match, Sector 16 team batted first after winning the toss. They scored 145 runs for 7 wickets in 20 overs.

Sleuths of the CBI today caught red-handed Rajwant Singh, a senior assistant branch in charge in the deputy commissioner’s office, Mohali, while a taking a bribe of Rs 10,000 from an ‘84 anti-Sikh riots victim to issue him a red card.

Two killed in accidents
Panchkula, April 22
A 22-year-old woman was killed while her father was seriously injured in a mishap near Sector 6, here, tonight. According to the police, Amba Bhatta of Modern Housing Complex was seriously hurt when their Maruti Zen car collided with a Ford Fiesta car on Chandigarh-Panchkula road at 9 pm.

Cash, valuables stolen from two cars
Chandigarh, April 22
In two separate incidents, thieves decamped with valuables and cash after breaking windowpanes of two cars in various parts of the city. Ashok Kakkar of Volga electrical, Sector 7-C, reported to the police alleging that his briefcase containing Rs 52,000, a chequebook, credit card and a driving licence was stolen from his car parked in Sector 7 on Monday.

Paper leak scam: Cop surrenders
Chandigarh, April 22
Constable Sunil Kumar, a suspect in the assistant sub-inspector (ASI) recruitment paper leak scam, today surrendered before the investigating officials. According to the DSP (CID) Satbir Singh, Sunil had been absent from duty since the scam came to light and was wanted by the police for his role in it.
