Health dept goes soft on adulteration
Rajpura, April 22 The Rajpura police received a tip-off that a trader in the new grain market was storing spurious desi ghee following which a police team raided the premises at around 9 pm and seized more then 3,500 litres of ghee. But when the police got in touch with the civil surgeon, he refused to send a team of health officials stating that it was too late. Sources in the police said following this, they deployed a team of policemen to guard the storehouse and wait for the health officials, who arrived on the scene at around 12 in the noon. Sources in the police said though they kept demanding that collective sample of the ghee be taken, the health officials decided to follow the policy of random sample collection. The police said this could provide the trader with a legal loophole that he could exploit in the court to get away with the crime. They said the trader might content that some boxes of ghee had deliberately been replaced. If the health team had taken a collective sample, a strong case could have been prepared against the trader, the officials said. This is the second instance when the health department showed reluctance in initiating action. A few days back when the police team had unearthed a spurious milk-making unit in the town, the health officials refused to initiate any legal procedure. It was not until the police got in touch with Punjab health minister Luxmi Kanta Chawla and directly reported the matter to her that the department swung into action. Meanwhile, a case under Sections 420, 273 and 274 of the IPC has been registered against the trader. The police is now waiting for the chemical examination report. |

Kang plays par game to be tied second
Chandigarh, April 22 Unheralded 15-year-old caddie from Delhi, Kapil Kumar, took a one-stroke lead in sultry conditions returning a one under par 71. Breathing down the youngster’s neck was Kang and four others, Sourav
Bahuguna, Amanjyot Singh, S. Rudresh and Rashid Khan. Abhishek Jha, S.K.
Lakra, Pawan Kumar, Kanishk Madan and Rahul Sikand were all tied for the seventh place at one over par 73. Kang bogeyed the eighth hole to make the turn at one over par. Two bogeys on the 10th and 13th interspersed with a birdie on the 11th saw the Chandigarh golfer stranded at two over. But then, he sank birdies on the 14th and 18th to finish with a par-72 card and a tied second slot after the first round.
Kapil Kumar, a seventh standard school dropout, has been constantly working at his game. Having established himself as one of the leading players in the national junior circuit, the 15-year-old now is a potential threat to the established players on the amateur circuit. A bright start where he made a birdie on the opening hole was immediately followed by successive bogeys on the next two holes. One more on the fifth ensured that Kapil took the turn at two-over. However, playing some steady golf, Kapil not only erased those mistakes but also went one better signing off with a birdie on the 18th. The other two birdies came on the 14th and 15th with the one of the latter being his pick. After hitting his drive into the fairway bunker, he drew the ball onto the green and holed the ensuing eight-footer for a birdie. “The conditions were hot out there. But, playing against the best brings out the best in you. I was upset after the back-to-back bogeys but was determined in my back nine,” said the cat-eyed Kapil who now trains under renowned coach Romit
Bose. It’s always good to lead but this is only the first round and we have 54 more holes to go. Anything can happen,” he added. The packed leader groups sounded the shape of things to follow on the next three days. The scores (first round): Kapil Dev 71, Harjinder Singh Kang, Sourav
Bahuguna, Amanjyot Singh, S. Rudresh and Rashid Khan (72 each), Abhishek
Jha, Lt-Col S.K. Lakra, Pawan Kumar, Kanishk Madan and Rahul Sikand (73 each). |

Official in DC’s office caught taking bribe
Chandigarh, April 22 The CBI recovered a list of 50 riot victims and Rs 95,000 from the accused, who tried to flee, but was arrested. The victim, Jagdish Singh of Zirakpur, told the CBI that the accused had called him to the Sector 43 ISBT along with the money. The CBI team also recovered a briefcase from Rajwant containing some incriminating documents. The raiding team said there was the possibility of surfacing of more such cases during the course of investigation. A CBI official told The Tribune that Jagdish told the investigating officials that Rajwant had demanded Rs 30,000 from his son, Sukhwinder Singh. Rajwant told Sukhwinder that he would have to pay Rs 10,000 each to SDM, Dera Bassi, and an official in the main office while Rs 5,000 each would be given to two higher officials in the DC’s office. The investigating officials are also probing this angle and will seize records from the DC’s office in this connection. Sukhwinder told The Tribune that he had to migrate from Uttar Pradesh (UP) following the 1984 riots and had to leave behind his two acres of land, which is now under illegal occupation. His father applied for a red card in the DC’s office on June 28 last year after the Prime Minister announced a relief package of Rs 2 lakh for the ‘84 riot victims. Even after conducting a couple of inquiries, the officials concerned were not issuing the card to his father. On April 18, Rajwant called his father informing him that the case was under consideration and they should meet him at his office in the afternoon. Sukhwinder further alleged that he went to Rajwant at his office, where he demanded Rs 30,000 from him for issuing the card. He said even as he had original documents confirming his domicile in UP, Rajwant told him that he would prepare forged documents for him, which would help him in getting the relief amount. Rajwant had called Sukhwinder at the Jalandhar counter at the ISBT, but later changed the place and called him to a nearby tube well to get the first instalment of Rs 10,000 of the bribe money. He took the money and thrust it into his pocket without counting. At this the CBI officials led by assistant superintendent Armandeep Singh swooped down on him. He managed to give them a slip, but was nabbed by the alert officials. He was taken to the tube well where the officials asked him to remove his trousers and kept the same into their custody. The CBI officials said they would look into the matter to find out the involvement of other officials in the DC’s office in connection with the case. |
