Rally holds traffic to ransom
New Delhi, February 27 But the SAD-BJP “big farmers’ show” on the busy working day morning also managed to throw traffic in the Capital out of gear, not just on roads leading to the rally site in Central Delhi but elsewhere as well, causing inconvenience to the general public. To top it all, speakers at the rally took great pride in recounting how no vehicle was plying between the national Capital till as far as Karnal. A very satisfied SAD president Sukhbir Badal stated how “no vehicle is plying between Delhi and Karnal”. Perhaps it hardly mattered to those connected with the rally that a majority of key roads in and around the sprawling Ram Lila Maidan in the heart of the city had been badly affected on the busy Tuesday morning, inconveniencing thousands of commuters on way to work, colleges and hospitals. Right in the vicinity of the rally area are major hospitals like Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital and G.B. Pant Hospital. The worst affected roads on Tuesday were Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, Subhash Marg and Ring Road where stopping time at red signals increased as traffic came to a crawl. Harried relatives could be seen making frantic phone calls after the hearse van they were accompanying from Pitampura on way to Nigam Bodh got delayed due to traffic jam on Ring Road. The situation was worse on the busy Vikas Marg that connects East Delhi to the centre of the city and it took commuters more than an hour to cross the ITO Bridge in the morning rush hours. Cascading effects were felt elsewhere as several other parts of Central and North Delhi and ISBT at Kashmere Gate were clogged and the traffic movement improved only towards late afternoon. As harried traffic policemen struggled to restore some semblance of order on the roads for hours, motorists caught in traffic jams were unanimous in criticising the authorities for allowing political parties to hold rallies in the heart of the city on normal working days. Angry commuters rightfully questioned that why the authorities could not ask political parties to hold their rallies in open spaces in the outskirts of the Capital. “Why does the public have to suffer because of these rallies,” they asked. For Delhi commuters being caught in traffic jams due to political rally and their leaders’ movements is quite common. On January 23, Mayawati made an impressive entry into the Capital through a mammoth rally at the Ram Lila grounds. The only saving grace was that unlike the SAD rally, the BSP affair was held on Sunday. On Monday members of Punjab Congress took up issues of farmers of the state with the Center. The situation was repeated on Wednesday when BKU decided to take up farmers’ issues at Jantar Mantar. Only this time, the affected areas were limited to parts of Central Delhi. |

Witness alleges harassment
New Delhi, February 27 “The Delhi Police has been constantly harassing me for all these years and pressurizing me to corroborate their stance the persons killed were two Lashkar-e -Tayiba terrorists .They have dug out whole lot of nonsense regarding my degrees and practice just to intimidate me. My family and myself are constantly living in fear and can be killed anytime”, said Dr. Krishna addressing a press conference today evening at the Press Club of India. He alleged that though the police has served upon many notices to him but he had not been granted permission by the Delhi government to file a case against the officers involved in the crime for the past six years. He alleged that the police was also trying to frame him as a terrorist having links with the LeT. “Somebody calls me from Dubai and Gulf countries at the behest of Delhi police. I believe that the calls can be used against me for showing links with terrorists”, said Dr. Krishna. |

Greater National Capital Region mooted
New Delhi, February 27 Ghaziabad, Greater Noida and develop them industrially by providing essential services including Metro rail facilities. The suggestion comes at a time when the very concept of the National Capital Region was being questioned because of tepid response of some of the states which has resulted in tardy development of the area. The proposed move will amount to creation of large-scale employment for the youth of such satellite towns and prevent their large-scale migration towards National Capital Region, holds ASSOCHAM. The satellite townships identified for the purpose under jurisdiction of proposed GNCR should include places like Meerut, Hapur, Aligarh, Gajrola, Muradabad, Bulandshahr, Sikandrabad, Dadri, etc. in Uttar Pradesh, said ASSOCHAM president Venugopal N Dhoot. The Chamber has suggested that there should be a specific board consisting of town planners for the industrial development of the identified places that should report to the suggested GNCR region and work with it in a meticulous manner with due permission from state authorities. The other satellite townships that should be industrially developed comprise places such as Ballabgarh, Palwal, Karnal, Surajkund, Bahadurgarh, Alwar, Bhiwadi, Panipat, etc. For these satellite towns, their should again be a board that should be reporting to GNCR to draw industrial development package for the places. In a proposal submitted to the Central as well as state government of UP and Haryana, ASSOCHAM president Venugopal N Dhoot has suggested that state governments of Haryana and UP in consultation with central government should immediately form the proposed region. Dhoot hoped that the new region would effectively handle the shortages of power, water, health and other basic facilities etc, which is presently affecting the lives of NCR. He further recommended that Delhi needs to be decongested from its current influx, especially in view of Commonwealth Games of 2010 and the best way to do so is to develop townships and industrial clusters to generate employment opportunities for the tier II and tier III cities. The ASSOCHAM has further suggested that the satellite townships in the GNCR should have independent municipal authorities which be empowered to deal with the authorities concerned and should also handle the law and order problems of the region. The Chamber has also called for ‘Pre-approved Master Plan’ on the lines of Delhi Master Plan for the upcoming satellite towns and municipalities and the proposed master plan should incorporate all the necessary laws to provide relief to common citizens. |
