ABVP vandalisation over Ramayana

New Delhi, February 26
Over 500 Liberal democrats ,both students and teachers from across Delhi University, took put a strong protest march Tuesday. They were protesting the ABVP’s vandalisation at the history department on Monday .The ABVP activists were enraged over varied versions of the Ramayana in a history book for BA second year.

The march began at the Vivekananda statue and covered the entire North campus. On reaching the VC’s office their memo was received by Dean, Nayanjot Lahiri.

Student Maya John said that, “we presented our key demands which include firstly, legal and police action against the ABVP activists who vandalized the history department and HOD’s office. This demand was accepted and three ABVP activists have been arrested and five are absconding.” The other demands include action against ABVP president Vikas Dahiya and others behind the act, a proctorial committee to examine the conduct of police personnel near the history department when the episode of violence took place.

The liberal democrats also have plans of scheduling a solidarity meeting on February 28 outside the VC office. On the same day the academic council is also meeting.

Meanwhile, DUTA has come out in support of the liberal democrat protest informing in a terse note that, “we condemn the assault on the head of the history department of DU by a group of students.” They further add that, “it is shocking to observe that some elements are unwilling to tolerate critical assessment of existing literature, stories and plays on mythology. It is widely known that the Ramayana has hundreds of versions and A.K. Ramanujan had collected some of these versions.”

SAHMAT informs that the ABVP students act has “shocked the entire academic community” and “it has to be noted that the article objected to by the ABVP was included in the reading materials two years ago and the raising of the issue only now seems prima facie motivated to lend a communal colour to the issue.”

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, February 26
Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH), Greater Noida, in association with MART, a rural marketing and livelihood consultancy, organized its flagship event “Indian Marketing Summit on Inclusive Marketing: Innovative Strategies for the Development of Masses” last week.

BIMTECH’s 2nd Indian Marketing Summit (IMS) provided a platform from where India’s business leaders, decision-makers from government, corporate practitioners, donor agencies, NGOs, senior managers and academicians discussed and shared insights and experiences on key issues of national interest.

The summit included a number of sessions on specific sub-themes related to this overall theme. These were: the reality of mass market; impediments to address the real problems at the base of the socio-economic strata; innovation in marketing strategies and appropriate technological interventions to improve the quality of life.

Inclusive Marketing is of great relevance to any economy which has to maintain a uniformity in its growth, characterized by development at all levels of society. “Inclusive Marketing will require identifying key stakeholders and developing a vision ensuring better tomorrow for the masses through capacity building,” said Rama Bijapurkar, market strategy consultant.

Speaking at the event, Pradeep Kashyap, CEO, MART and chief mentor of the summit said, “Inclusive Marketing looks at the poor as both producer and consumer. In India there are 650 million people who survive on the income which is less than US$ 1 per day. Comprising 30% of India’s market, this section of the population is viewed as a bin for obsolete products. And here comes the responsibility of the corporate sector which looks at this section as a potential rural market.”

After the lease period, the firm will hand over the utility and infrastructure to the MCF.

According to the MCF, the plant will have the capacity to treat over 600 tonnes of solid waste.

Gender budgeting discussed
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, February 26
Looking forward to the union Budget, Women Power Connect (WPC) organised a media consultation on Monday, to discuss the impact of gender budgeting on the overall development of Indian women.

“The government should not treat gender budget as another buzz word. Unless gender issues are seen as being integral to the planning of all developmental schemes, efforts towards achieving gender equality cannot be achieved” said Ranjana Kumari, president, WPC.

While detailing the aspects of gender budgeting and its impact on women, the WPC distributed a ‘gender audit of union budget 2007-08’.

The audit reveals that though there was more financial allocation and coverage under different ministries for women in the last year’s budget, there is a need to overcome limitations of current budget in crucial areas affecting women.

“In the previous budget, only Rs 5 crore was allocated under social security for unorganised sector. This is highly disappointing in a situation where 94 per cent of women workers in India are in the unorganised sector,” said Vibhuti Patel, vice-president, WPC. “More financial allocation is needed for social security and empowerment of women.”

Rally throws traffic out of gear
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, February 26
Traffic in the National Capital Territory of Delhi was thrown out of gear today because of the rally by the Shrimoni Akali Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

With most of the key roads in and around the sprawling Ram Lila Maidan in the heart of the city having been closed, traffic on most of the roads came to a crawl. The situation was worse on the busy Vikas Marg which connects East Delhi to the centre of the city. It took commuters more than an hour to cross the ITO Bridge in the morning rush hours. The spill effect of the traffic was felt in the Central and New Delhi districts as well.

Harried traffic policemen struggled to restore some semblance of order on the roads for hours. Motorists caught in traffic jams were unanimous in criticizing the authorities for allowing political parties to hold rallies in the heart of the city on normal working days.

“Why cannot the authorities ask the political parties to hold their rallies in open spaces in Noida or Greater Noida? Why does the public have to suffer because of these rallies?” asked an angry commuter.

This was the second day that commuters were caught up in traffic jams in the Capital.

Razia Khatun’s murder solved
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, February 26
The West District Police has solved the murder case of Razia Khatun, 19, who was found with a slit throat on the night of February 19 in the Bindapur police station area. Four persons — Mushraf Hussain, Shamshad Alam, Mohammad Sabir and Mohammad Jawed have been arrested.

Mushraf Hussain, 38, is the prime suspect. Razia Khatun lived with him. Shamshad Alam, Mohammad Sabir, Mohammad Jawed killed the girl on his instructions.

On February 19, the PCR had received an information about a cylinder blast at C 1/24, Pratap Garden, Bindapur that had led to fire. When fire brigade officials reached the spot, they found that the fire had been doused. They found a female dead body aged between 19 to 20 years. Her name was reported to be Razia Khatun. She was lying on bed with burn injuries.

But, the fire officials found no evidence of LPG cylinder blast.

The postmortem report revealed that hemorrhage subsequent to cut throat injury was the cause of death.

A team led by IPS officer Parmaditya investigated the matter.

Mushraf who claimed to be the deceased’s uncle was suspected. He revealed that he along with his three associates had planned and committed the crime.

He further disclosed that six years ago he came in contact with Babita, a resident of Hazari Bagh (Jharkhand). He developed an illicit relationship with her and began to live with Babita and her two daughters — Razia and Bhanu at Dal Mandi Chowk, Banaras.

During his stay there he developed an illicit relationship with Razia. He told her that he would marry her, if she came to Delhi with him. Musharaf already has a wife and two children in Bihar.

Mushraf Hussain used to introduce the deceased as her niece. But Razia often insisted him for marriage. This often led to conflict and he decided to get rid off her.

On the day of incident, Mohd Sabir entered the premises of C-1/24 Partap Garden, Bindapur and found Razia alone in the house. She was cooking in the kitchen. Mohammad Sabir dragged Razia to the bed room, adjoining the kitchen, where Shamshad Alam slit her throat with a butcher knife. Later, Sabir poured petrol over Razia’s body and set it on fire.

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, February 26
A team of officers of Special Cell led by Inspector Badrish Dutt and Inspector V.N. Jha has busted a gang of interstate drug traffickers and arrested its two members, Bashir Ahmed, 33, from J&K and Ravinder, alias Ravi, 22, of Darbhanga, Bihar. About 95.5 kg poppy straw (opium) and one Maruti car have been recovered from their possession.

According to Alok Kumar, DCP, Special Cell, information was received that a gang of drug traffickers active in the Capital is receiving the consignments of poppy (opium) and distributing the drugs to its clients. Sources were deployed and surveillance was mounted to apprehend the gangsters. On February 23, specific information was received in the Special Cell that a huge consignment of poppy straw (opium) would change hands in the evening on Ring Road, near Gurdwara Majnu Ka Tilla.

A trap was laid at the spot. At about 5.30 pm, a car having registration No. DL-6CB-5048 was spotted. Driven by Balsa, it was coming from Wazirabad side. The car stopped on Ring Road near the Gurdwara and after about 5 minutes, a person later identified as Ravinder came on foot from ISBT side. Balsa also came out of the car and after a brief talk, both went to the rear of the car. Balsa opened the hatch back of the car with the keys and took out two gunny bags and handed them over to Ravinder. Police team immediately apprehended both of them. Four gunny bags of poppy straw (opium) were recovered from their possession which when weighed came to 95.5 kgs.

A case under NDPS was registered at PS Special Cell. Lodhi Colony, New Delhi.

Both the accused were subjected to sustained interrogation in which Bashir Ahmed disclosed that he came from J&K and initially he worked as a driver but later on he drove buses on contract. During this period, he came to know that some drivers and conductors consumed opium. Bashir got in touch with Ravinder and Shahid and through them got to know one Pappu, who supplied opium to the drivers. To earn fast money and realising great profit in this trade, Bashir Ahmed, Pappu, Ravi and Shahid formed a gang in 2007 and since then almost every third day they were procuring opium from Gwalior, MP, and then they sold it to drivers, conductors of roadways staff and other prospective clients with huge profit. They procured opium for Rs 500-700 per kg and after mixing impurities such as floor husk, they were selling it with high  profit.
