Newly Floated Housing Scheme
Quota for UT staff challenged

Chandigarh, February 4
On a writ petition filed by an advocate’s clerk, Anil Kumar, challenging 100 per cent reservation of houses for UT employees in the newly floated housing scheme, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, today issued notice of motion for February 12 to the Chandigarh administration and the housing board.

Another clinic sealed in P’kula
Panchkula, February 4
The clinic of a medical practitioner, a woman, was sealed by the health authorities at Bunga village near here today.The accused was not present at the clinic when a team of doctors from Panchkula comprising D. Sarika Malik, district drug controller, Dr M.L. Garg, district helath officer and Dr Parminder Singh posted at the primary health centre in Kot reached the village.

Murdered engineer’s body found
Mohali, February 4
The body of an engineer, who was allegedly kidnapped and later murdered in Delhi, was found in the Yamuna by the Delhi police today. The parents of the deceased live in Phase VII here.

Will Army get a fair deal?
Defence minister A.K. Antony said at the NCC Republic Day camp in New Delhi on January 19, that conscription was not a solution. Instead, the government, he said, would make a career in the armed forces more attractive. Antony has said several times in the last few months that he expected the Sixth Pay Commission to give better salaries and perks to the armed forces, which are short of over 14,264 officers.

Bhagat Singh remembered

Chandigarh, February 4
The Panjab University Teachers Association (PUTA) and Panjab University Campus Students’ Council jointly organised a function to commemorate the birth centenary of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh. MP and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal was the chief guest. Prof Jagmohan Singh, secretary, Association for Democratic Rights, and nephew of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, delivered the keynote address. Professor Singh dilated upon the revolutionary credo of Bhagat Singh and his associates. Sukhbir Singh Badal highlighted the need of remembering the martyrs for keeping the spirit of nationalism alive among the youth.

Sec-21 model school gets computer lab

The UT administration, in collaboration with DOEACC, has started a programme of setting new computer labs in schools. These labs will be equipped with LCD/DLP projector of minimum 2,500 lumens and magnetic boards (white). The first lab is being set in the model school of Sector 21.

‘I got inspired by my coach for korfball’

Shweta Dutta, who used to play basketball till last year, never dreamt of becoming an international korfball player within a year of switching over to the sport. After representing India at the World Championship held in the Czech Republic in November last year, Shweta is now preparing for the Asian Championship to be held in June in Andhra Pradesh.Talking to The Tribune, Shweta said, “It is very exciting to don the national colours. We finished 12th in the World Championship in which 16 countries, including Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, South Africa, Poland and Argentina, participated.”

Volleyball to get a fillip

The Chandigarh Volleyball Association is all set to rebuild the volleyball academy here and provide accommodation to players who had earlier been associated with the Sports Authority of India (SAI). The decision comes in the wake of closure of the SAI coaching centre and the Shivalik academy for volleyball. The association is now looking to rebuild the game within the city.

Youths snatch purse

A resident of Sector 8, Raj Bala complained to the police that her purse was snatched by two youths today. She said the youths quarrelled with the her in the afternoon near DAV School, Sector 8, and ran away after snatching her purse. The purse contained her passbooks, Rs 5,001 and a wristwatch.
